try to play all classes to see what suits your playsstyle, and you could also try the offline training mode. a good way to practise!

I suggest picking a different class in every game you play, and try out every weapon each class has. If your a person who wants go after the intellegents, play as the Scout, since he's the faster character. Behind the sidelines is ether sniper or engineer, she engineer can make turrets.

I would suggest starting out with Medic. You can be "kredit to team" with out directly fighting. Learn too move out of the way of enemy fire, good communication skills, and watch the person your healing so you can learn some things about other classes as well. If you want to play something else then Medic, avoid the Demoman, the Spy, and the sniper. The Demoman is a really hard class to master, and we have enough spies/snipers already. The Pyro is ok starting class, but the class has nothing much room for skill growth outside of mastering the airblast mecahnic. The Solidier, Engineer, or Heavy area all good classes. They have a lot of skill room to grow but are easy enough to learn. Just avoid rocket spamming with the Soldier (and learn some basic rocket jumps), don't just sit in the Intel room all day with the Engineer, and give up your sandvich occassionally to medics in need as a Heavy.

The jump key is seriously your friend. You want to learn how to travel using all of the classes as efficiently as possible. Half the fight is GETTING to the enemy.

Dont use the heavy without a medic nearby unless your enemies are complete noobs, you've got zero dodging capability even though your gun can rape-kill like nobody's business. Heavies aren't all that noob friendly like some would believe.

Dont be afraid to use melee, in the right circumstances it can save you ammo.

Don't be afraid to tackle the problems no one else will. Be the hero. If there's an imbalance on your team, don't wait for someone else to fix it. For example if there are no medics, be a medic.

Scouts can kill Heavies, just flank them to no end and they die very shortly. However you'll probably be putting all of your shotgun rounds into him when he drops dead ~ run, hide, reload, find some meds, then get back in the fight.

If you're low on health, retreat. This may seem like one of those unthinking run-and-guns but the same tactics that would help you in a game like Modern Warfare will help you here too. Use cover, wait for your health to get back up, (in this case, find medkits), never go it alone if you can help it. Dont follow everyone down the same corridor.

That being said, my best class is the scout. I love finding new ways into bases that really, only the scout, soldier, or demo man can get to. Thing about the Scout though is in tight spaces with sharp corners he can be out of a firing line in the blink of an eye while the other two have to absorb bullets. And with the addition of the double-barrel, there is no where you cant go.

Snipers, Medics, and medicless heavies, these are your targets when you play a scout.

Oh yeah, I wouldn't recommend engineer very early on. Not for a need of serious skills before playing the Engineer, but a bad Engineer can be kind of useless and attract a lot of hate.

If you're interested in playing an Engineer, watch the other Engineers, watch where they put their equipment down. When you feel like you can contribute with that class, always, ALWAYS build the ammo station (forget what it's called) first. It gives you metal to make more devices. Place that one down, then when you've got the metal, put down a simple sentry, then start upgrading the ammo station. When it hits level 2, upgrade your gun. When your gun hits level 2, upgrade your ammo station to level 3, then your sentry gun to level 3. Easy peasy. Dont build your sentry right next to the station, spies tend to go for the gun before they go to the station. If you're hanging around and someone is running right for your gun when the recharge station is 2 yards in the other direction ~ shoot them.

The spy is probably the most difficult class to master. Those disguise kits take a fair bit of forethought to use. Dont pick the scout ever, people can tell you're a spy because your running speed is no where NEAR that of a scout's. It's also a bad choice on maps with a very low number of players. Good players pay attention to the names, and could have met whoever you're copying less than a few seconds ago. When sabotaging engineer devices, go for the ammo station first.

To start: What have you played for fps before? If halo, go soldier. If serious sam, go scout.

If you get overwhelmed from the slaughterfest, fall back to medic or engineer.

If you're jonesin' for carnage, go with a heavy, demo or pyro.

If your opponent has too many camping engineers and snipers, go spy and don't forget (A) if you attack while in costume, you lose costume and (B) don't forget about your temporary invisibility!

Other than that good luck and I'm super glad that the cheapo deals on this game have sparked more interest in it.

It's the type of fps that gives you a breath of fresh air in comparison to the muck of cod, halo and bfbc.

I started playing again recently. Achievement's are doing my head in. Some are hard to get and everyone has a load of new weapons.

> Don't reenact The Boy Who Cried Wolf, i.e. don't spam the Watch your back.
> Teleporters are your friends.
> Sentries aren't.
> Stay away from the pyro. Always. Even if you're the pyro.
> Make sure you're never 'shown who is the boss'.

That should cover it for now.

Iv'e loved/hated every class now. when i was a noob i started as a sniper, then moved on to pyro/medic. now i've found the best fun is to be had as a soldier.

my only tip: stay away from spy for now. they're far too frustrating to play as a noob. Once you get backstabbed for the 100th time, you should know all the tips and tricks for playing a spy.

aww man, this makes me wish my dad hadnt taken my computer away. i want mah TF2.

OT: As a pyro, remember that right mouse is insanely useful, if difficult to master. Nothing annoys a soldier more than being killed by their own rockets.

That's where I'm at right now. :( I really want to get into it again but dang it, there are so many new weapons that I don't have! And you can't earn them anymore...they're random. Which makes me a sad panda. :(

Back OT though, my best advice is communicate! Since you have the Steam version and not the Xbox (YES, I'm biased!), I think you'll find friendly people willing to help you, if you get on the right servers. I learned the most by asking questions...90% of the time I was met with friendly responses. Also, don't just communicate with questions...as some of the other posters have already said, this is a team game. You can't play this game like you would play Modern Warfare or Halo. You do not win if you don't work together. Especially if you're on the defensive. There is nothing more frustrating than a team full of hardheaded players all trying to go it alone. Nothing gets done. :/

Ooh, also, I would save trying to play the spy for last. You really need to understand the mechanics of the game before you try him. I'd start off as like medic, soldier or pyro. Their roles are pretty simple and straightforward.

*EDIT*: Also if anyone wants to add me via Steam, feel free. Always looking for new people to play with! :D

*DOUBLE EDIT*: Oh and before I forget...pay attention to how many of each class is already on your team! I can't think of the button right now because it's almost intuitive (is it "`"?), but press the button you would normally use to change classes mid-game and look at how many people there are per class. If there are 6 snipers on a team of 10 people, for heavens sake do not switch to sniper, no matter how much you want to get in your oh-so-glorious headshots. And if you're already one of those 6 snipers, take one for the team: switch to an unused, needed class (probably going to be medic). This is one of my biggest TF2 pet peeves. >.<

A lot of the game boils down to personal choice.
I personally love stealth, so I play Spy all the time. I like feeling useful, so I'm first to play medic when the team needs one. I'm okay as engineer (and no one likes to play as one), so I usually do that as well.

There is one thing you need to remember though.

It is called "Team" Fortress for a reason.
You will have to support your teammates at some point. On a bad team, this can be the same as carrying them.
You might get annoyed when you're (say) protecting the intel. in ctf_ maps, and the rest of your team is sniping like a bunch of 'tards.

Keeping in voice contact (and playing with people you know) are, respectively, essential and advisable.
