Thank God for auto-save

So last night I made a thread about how I left my character swimming in Oblivion by herself so I wouldn't bore myself to death from swimming for hours to raise my Athletics. Well more than 2 hours later i finally retook control and fast-traveled somewhere, only to have the game crash under a black screen. I wanted to scream. More than two hours of swimming...GONE!!?!?!

However, once I restarted the console after calming down I found that the game auto-saved a few minutes before it crashed because my character somehow hit a loading screen while swimming. So I loaded the auto-save and retained the points I gained in Athletics and was able to pick up where I left off.

I was so relieved, happy, and grateful that the game had auto-save. I wanted to give a thankful prayer to the person who invented auto-save.

So I ask if there have been any situations in which auto-save saved your sorry ass from losing minutes, or perhaps hours of unsaved gameplay, or after you just got pwned by an unexpected threat?

I was at my friend's place yesterday and he started a new character in mass effect. He was playing on the hardest difficulty, and when it came to the point where he had to fight the 2 assassins outside of chora's den the first time you go there, he died, and autosave brought him right back to the beginning of the fight, as opposed to the last place he had saved THE BEGINNING OF FREAKING EDEN PRIME. Lucky for him.

That's a relief. In Fallout 3, I was playing through some tunnel or metro or something like that. I played for about an hour and I died, and I had grown to discover that I completely forgot to save in that hours time.

Sort of unrelated to the best autosaves, but Half Life 1 lacked autosaves, and when I spent two hours before being sliced to bits by an unseen fan, only to be put right back to the start of the game, that was really annoying.

Favorite Autosave - Playing MechAssualt 2: Lone Wolf. I was fighting an enemy and he killed me but I simultaneously killed him. The game auto saved after he died, and he was a VERY HARD BOSS, and when the game reloaded I was further into the game after the boss fight.

Most Hated Autosave - Fallout 3; I was running from a Death Claw, game autosaved when i entered a new area running, and then i got hit and died. Loaded the game....same fate. Loaded again......same fate again. I was 32 hours into this character and had to delete them.

Thats what usually happens to me. Fallout is the only game in which I forget to save often.

So that each time you load you get shot again? I hate Auto-save in these instances.

OT: I have 2 words, power cut. Auto-saves saved me about 2 hours of grinding in Oblivion.

I like quick save more, especially in S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadow of Chernobyl or Clear sky where the quick save is your main protection against enemies and crashing

The day I got Shivering Isles.

I played through the quests without saving because I was so immersed. Then I got stuck in a tree. I flipped out. Luckily I had autosaved when leaving the castle

Just a thing I've noticed in this thread. People saying "I autosaved". You technically didn't autosave. The game did.
/minor gripe
