Has anyone ever actually ran into that guy? You know, the one where you'll say you play Rock Band and they'll say why don't you just play the real guitar/drums?

Or that guy that goes to a book to movie adaptation and come out griping about every little tidbit that was missed during the translation?

Or just about any other stories of people like this you've heard of, have you ever actually run into them?

I can't say that I have, but its always interesting hearing about these people. This is mostly talking about those people you can so easily categorize into some fabled group.

For all intensive purposes, I am that guy. Except I enjoy Rock Band.

I do know a lot of people ten times worse than I am though. They do tend to tick me off.

Me too. I love Rock Band and Guitar Hero but every time I hear someone talking too much smack like they know about music suddenly I invite them to play violin with me. Don't get me started on what Peter Jackson did to LOTR. I loved the movies but Jackson should be kicked in the nads a few times. At least he didn't get everything he tried on screen.

My version of that guy is in WoW. He studies a boss fight and drones on for an hour before we go to the dungeon run concerned. By the time we get started i have forgotten the things he has said. Summarise, please ? He also goes in runs with other people but then promptly forgets everything in it.

Him: oh i went here the other day
Me: so why didnt you tell us about the 10 guys this boss summons ?

He also plays "pet classes" like the DK.
Tank: Alright let me get aggro real quick.
Him: *summons army of death*
Tank: What happened to all my aggro ?
Group wipes.

2nd situation
Tank: let me get aggro real quick
Him on Hunter: *pet growls*
Tank: My RL LOS keeps getting blocked by pet ( tyrannasaur )
Him: *stands there and keeps doing not much* 10 secs later starts doing stuff.

Should point out we play on a very limited server, so try to stick it out with our "core" group, hoping everyone will learn and get better at playing. Everyone has, excpet him.

I've never met that "guy" I've met that "girl" though. My ex told me that mainly because she failed at the game.

I am NOT that guy.
I am the guy defending them saying
"Yeah, but when you play guitar you don't get pretty rainbow buttons"
Or
"Yeah, the book was different, but hey, you can't see guys heads blown off reading a book"

I'm a 'that guy', playing guitar for real is far more fun and interesting that playing with a plastic rip off. One of the best experiences you could have is writing songs then playing them live, Guitar Hero and Rock Band cannot give you that.

C'mon you lot, we need more great song writers, sick of all weak pop stars!

I want to shred it up like Ygnwie Malmstien, and real guitar can't do that.... at least not with me playing.

I guess my question to you is, who are you to say that its more fun and interesting than playing with a "plastic rip off"? Maybe we don't have the time to actually learn how to play and when we do have time, we twiddle away on our plastic guitars because we get enjoyment out of it?

Anyways, this isn't just about the ones I've brought up! And I'm surprised at all the LoTR hate X_x I honestly thought they were great movies...

I know a guy who almost killed himself on a motorcycle because he "pwnd" with them in a game. He wanted to proved he was better than I am on a bike, and the bike and him went different directions. I warned him he was being stupid, but you can't watch an idiot all the time.

Aside from the elves coming to Helm's Deep I don't see what the problem is.

I hate the people who criticize a movie loud enough for me to hear it in the theater.
I warned you not to get me started. First tho'...unless it's deeply warranted I don't do crits in the theatre.

The two statues of the kings at (I think) Rauros falls. In the book they're standing face to face, watching each others backs. It's a commentary on the history of Middle Earth. In the movie they're both facing up river. WTF? WHY!? Seems picky BUT Jackson kept making such changes, to the point that some of the characters no longer have the same motivations. Aristotle: Character is everything. Jackson: Fuck character, I have CG.

I always whine about how there is no Tom Bombadil in the fucking movie. Seriously, the whole forest/tombs with wights part was probably one of my favorite moments in the first few chapters.

And I hated how they removed the elf guy with a long name (was it Glorfindel? Or something like that... Don't remember) who met Aragorn and the hobbits on their way to Rivendell and gave them the horse and replaced him with Arwen, turning her into some misplaced action-chick figure.

She wasn't fucking there... If anyone is supposed to be the action chick, it's Eowyn, and she is.
Tolkien himself said that if they made a movie he had one major wish: Remove sections as needed (i.e. Bombadil) but don't bloody abridge stuff (i.e. the fusing of Arwen and Glorfindel) Did Jackson listen? NooOO.... Be glad though, he almost had Arwen at Helms Deep fighting alongside Aragorn. Filmed footage and everything. Damn hack.

P.S. I was bummed about no Bombadil either.

I actually have a question about the books. I heard that Faramir had no urge to take the ring from Frodo. Is this true? Was he more powerful than all other men in that he had no actual desire for the ring?

Every time I run into people like this, I calmly point out that comparing Rock Band or Guitar Hero to the real live playing of guitars is like bragging about how you put on your overalls and red T-shirt every other day and go around stomping on the heads of little mushrooms with feet. We know it's a game. We know it doesn't actually give us musical talent. It's there for our enjoyment, and as an alternative to spending thousands of dollars of our money on instruments and lessons. When we exclaim excitedly about how we can beat a really hard song towards the end of the game on Expert mode, it's the same as exclaiming excitedly about beating a level in Call of Duty on Veteran. We know full well we can't actually play the instruments.

With that said, I'm currently at college studying music, and I'm the vocalist/lyricist in a heavy metal band that has a strong emphasis on musicality and holistic musicianship. So it's not like I don't understand where you're coming from, I just think it's stupid to say that Rock Band is without merit simply because you're not actually performing.

Meh... this old chestnut.

I've found that alot of "real" guitarists gripe about it because its not like a real guitar.

But there are a few "real" guitarists who realize...

It's just a game. A simulation. A pretend plastic guitar with buttons instead of strings.

An imitation.

I simply don't understand what people have an issue with. Is pretending to be a rockstar so bad?

The only time I ever really was that guy is when I saw Eragon in the theaters. I actually almost threw my popcorn at the screen because they had left out so many critical plot elements.

"That guy" is fine as long as he doesn't use his points of view to make himself sound like he's better than you. Then he's just annoying.

Its funny that one of my 'friends' is that guy, he thinks hes awesome and on the occasions that we talk about guitar hero or rock band, he starts going on massive rants of how it has only 1 string and 5 frets, but me and all my frisnds actually play the real guitar and we still enjoy it
