My name is Aidan, but without fail it gets spelt Aiden. I normally don't object too much, but particularly when it's on certificates and awards it gets quite annoying. It becomes even worse when my friend, named Aiden has his name spelt Aidan. It's happened before, and it's quite incredible that they can get both of our names wrong at the same time.

Oh, the 'defiantly' thing does rile me so. Especially because it's generally otherwise alright people who do it.

Specific to me, I'm about the only person of the staff where I work (a nursing home) that can pronounce the names of the residents. One, whose name is "Walters" is constantly being called "Waters", they can't speak clearly enough to differentiate between "Wise" and "Wyers", and names like "McSparron" and "de la Morvionnnais" just don't get said at all. They go "the new lady...in room 5" and I have no idea because I just work in the kitchen.

But then we get a resident whose name is "Brkljac" and I finally meet my match. Thankfully I haven't had to refer to her yet.

I see a lot of people ripping on spelling and grammar here. Which I can understand since they are important. Little note: english is not my native language. It is dutch so forgive my spelling.

back OT: Mine is people ripping on MY spelling when they fail miserable at everything else. To illustrate: I ask them one simple question -> what is the lightest atom?

Though, I do like to make fun of all the red makeup characters running around in D&D.

Add the confusion with then/than and those who insist on saying of when they should use have and this is basically what I gets me rolling.

The two that bug me are "defiantly" when they mean "definitely", and "I could care less" when they mean "I couldn't care less". If you say that you "could care less", you're probably hurting your own argument.

Ah, but if you are using google chrome to autocorrect spelling, it will always gives you defiantly, instead of definitely, thus some people think it's the correct spelling by how similar they are spelt.

You know a Chrome user sometimes, just by that even.

I often feel spell check has made me dumber. Sure, I do spell most of my words correctly and use them correctly most of the time, but when there are words I rarely use or rarely use in writing at least then I sometimes manage to mess up just because I spell it wrong and stumbles on to another word which is in the dictionary. Being someone who is relatively proud of having correct grammar and spelling even on the internet you can bet that I will defiantly edit my post and fix it.
I did spell defiantly on purpose, now it's your chance to guess if I really did mean definitely

Since I've got into reptiles, hearing the whole "My brothers girlfriends sisters friends grandmothers dog had a snake, and one day it was lying beside them in bed because it was measuring them up to eat them!" story. Especially with all the horror stories going around at the minute with all the snake escapes and the python attack on two children.

Yes, snakes like all animals can be dangerous when not treated with respect. but 1) You get FAR more deaths and injuries by dogs each year, and no one proposes a ban on them? No, because they're too cute and cuddly.
2) think about it. if a snake 'measured up' it's meal in the wild, it'd starve to death. It's prey isn't going to just sit around and wait for it to eat it. Most snakes aren't big enough to eat a human anyway. Maybe something like an anaconda.. but not most other snakes.

I just typed "defiantly" into Google and one of the first links was someone asking the difference between the two, like they're just two different ways to spell the word, ugh...

To be fair, my mum goes through all the people in the family before she gets to mine... If it's family/family friends that do it, I wouldn't be surprised.

OT: What gets me is when say, I write a comment on a friends FB status and one of their friends addresses me but misspells my name.

EDIT: Actually something else that annoys me is when people try to abbreviate but it's practically useless. So anyone who physically says "OH EM GEE" when it is the same damn number of syllables as "Oh my God" really grinds my gears.

On topic, I agree about using the whole "text shorthand" in non-texting environments. It actually doesn't save time and creates more confusion because most people have to ask for clarification.

Case in point: I had a chat window open with someone who typed "u nd 2 let ppl know."

When I asked what the "nd" was, the person said it was her shorthand for "need".

Really? Not typing those two "e"s saved that much time?

I'm still trying to determine if the bolded part is intentional....Rouge means "red", as in the color, people. Rogue means "dishonest or unprincipled" and would be the correct term.


There's a lot of little mistakes, they're/there/their, its/it's, you're/your and such that don't necessarily make me rage, but they do make me instantly think a bit less of the writer (if English is their native language).

More on topic, when people use the word scientific to describe something (normally a survey) that really wasn't scientific at all. When a educational book (like my last history textbook) doesn't use references. I don't really care what they are I would just like to know that you aren't just pulling these statements out of your ass!

I'm not that bothered by it. A huge amount of people on the internet doesn't speak English as a first language(including myself), believe it or not. However, what does bothers me is that sometimes when I come across a person with really bad grammar, and decide to check where they live, I often find that they're from USA. I assume most of them are pretty young though.

I'd say the one I dislike seeing the most is people using "your" instead of "you're" and vice versa. Can only imagine how much it hurts to read that when you're from an English speaking country.

The expression is '...Fuck's sake', as in 'For Fuck's sake'.

The expression is NOT 'Fuck sakes'. That would be meaningless and incorrect.

Neglect the English language and it falls into disrepair.

Also, the mistake that people tend to make in which statistics, facts independent of context and spelling are somehow indicative of overall intellectual capacity.

...I don't like it when people are douchebags in online multiplayer to total strangers. I know, I know it's the internet and all that jazz, but still. There's enough hate in real life, no need for more. Wether it's towards me, a friend of mine or a stranger is irrelevant. I just cringe mentally when people starts to call eachothers names and stuff. I like to think it's just mistakes people make when they are frustrated and hiding behind anonymity.
