Sorry Bob but alot of this article is just comes across as rather pretentious in my eyes and smacks to me of trying to sound clever rather than an a serious attempt at listing truly epic scenes, your certainly entitled to your opinions but as 'professional critic' who has on many occasions made some rather super observations about cinema that I've really enjoyed I hate it when it seems like your trying to conform to what 'critics' are 'supposed to talk like':
Superman 3: Is in it's entirety so far from any definition of awesome (as are all it's scenes that it's near comical.
Zabrinskie Point: Whilst a good film isn't up there as an all time great moment, I mean seriously, it's just an explosion, theres been far more epic ones filmed in the past (the nuke scene in Terminator 2 comes to mind)
The Expendables: I'm not going to argue the merits of the movie as I know you loathe it though for me it was a good old fun silly action movie (not a classic but entertaining... but I digress) That Scene though WAS awesome I will grant. But the automatic shotgun scene was better I'll give you this one anyway though
Jurassic Park The Lost World..... Ok.... just give me a minute here.... I'm sorry WHAT?! Seriously? Please tell me this is some kind of attempt at being ironic or something cos if you seriously think this was one of the all time epic moments of cinema over say, the first scene where Grant sees the dinosaur and Hammond welcomes them to the part in the first movie, or for that matter the final scene with the T-Rex in the Lobby... or for that matter any other movie that doesn suck and blow simultaneously. Ok... deep breaths... The Lost World was NOT in all honesty THAT bad a movie but the trouble with it for me was that it was both infinitely worse than the original and a STAGGERINGLY massive dissapointement for anyone who had read the novel before seeing it. And no, I think you'll find most dinosaur loving kids wanted to see dinosaurs being dinosaurs, not dinosaurs being godzilla. I mean if I wanted to see the latter... well I'd watch fracking Godzilla! (disclaimer: I would not on pain of death ever sit through the remake of Godzilla again....)
The Protector: Right I'll grant you THAT one hands down. That was pretty damn epic. Rather cheesy but still a very impressive piece of moviemaking.
Zombie: No. Just no. And to say this is better than Walking Dead even in jest.... Resident Evil is a better zombie movie than this. And I can think of no greater insult than that for this tripe.
2001: Ah 2001... the poster child for pretentious film critics to wax lyrical about in attempt to demonstrate sophistacted taste and an advanced intellect. It's a classic 'if you don't like it that's obviously because your too dumb to get it' movie of which Inception is the latest example in my eyes. The difference being Inception is actually entertaining. 2001 is breathtaking and has some incredible shots and ideas but it is for the most part, I'm sorry, painfully slow and unintersting. And the final scene is the ultimate cop out of 'lets go nuts with the special effects rather than write a proper ending' that has been picked apart and given meaning that just isnt there by so many pompous critics that it has become taboo not to go along with this mindset. Well bollocks to that! Kubrik was a genius but 2001 is boring and the final scene is just a dull and lazy end to a dull movie.
Return of the Dragon: Nope the scene is epic in premise, I mean it's Bruce Lee vs Chuck Norris for god's sake, but in the end it's a rather dull fight, neither technically very impressive (both of them have done FAAAAR better work)not beatifully coreographed and nor is it stunningly shot.
I've posted more than enough of a rant now though so will stop now but.... NO. Bad Bob. New list of movies with ACTUALLY epic scenes please.
(as ever pleae take this as it's meant, as constructive criticism not just a random rant )
