Now, i don't think this will work at all because NFT based gaming will never work well enough to compete with regular games which means there is no customer base
And most of the NFT shit is either totally peripheral to playing games or they start waffling on about in-game assets being sellable for realworld cryptocurrency... and, look, everytime you bring real world economies into the mix with games you attract scum... and they make for a real *fun* game community.

It is a console for people rich enough to use NFTs meant to come to the market years in the future. They might actually get that kind of performance then, but it won't be impressive anymore, nor particularly cheap.
The tech already exists... in honking big, very expensive, high end gaming rigs. Gonna be a long time before it's mature enough to be scaled down to fit in that kid's lunchbox sized case they seem to be proposing... by that time MS and Sony game consoles (Nintendo, as always, will do their own thing regardless) will have beaten them to the punch. So that leaves them with their cryptodouchery as their selling point, and as you've said, no one's invested in actually making good games.

The problem is finding any NFT games that can use this properly. Everything in development looks either low effort or downright scammy. As it takes years to make good games, there still won't be any when they want to launch that thing.
That's because none of the pricks are interested in making games they're focused on making money.

So apparently LimeWire is back.

As a music NFT marketplace. The hell is a music NFT anyway?

Presumably an NFT but instead of the payload data being a link to a JPG, it's a link to an MP3?
Well yeah probably, but are they full songs? Covers? Just the instrumentals? I don't know much about the music industry but my impression was that they care A LOT about rights and other legal concerns.

In any case, doomed to fail.

Squeenix bravely ploughing ahead anyway 😬

Square Enix has partnered with NFT ecosystem Enjin to release Final Fantasy NFTs.

A digital collection of cards celebrating the 25th anniversary of Final Fantasy 7 will be released on the cross-chain network Efinity and available to those who purchase items from the physical collection, expected to launch in 2023.

An action figure is available to pre-order now; the deluxe version of which will include a code to redeem an NFT version of the figurine.

Pre-orders for the physical trading cards will go live later this year.

Enjin states it is a "destination for eco-conscious blockchain [users]", that it "provides environmentally-friendly solutions for building decentralised gaming products", and that it is "committed to carbon-neutral NFTs" (by 2030).

It all seems a bit ironic when the ecological themes of Final Fantasy 7 involve a megacorporation sucking the life out of the planet - where's Avalanche when you need them?

"This partnership marks a coming-of-age phase for digital assets and entertainment; Square Enix, an esteemed developer with iconic intellectual property, is paving the way for the industry," said Enjin exec Witek Radomski.

"By using Efinity, fans can experience interactive NFTs without even realising they're on the blockchain. Enjin can establish the next phase of growth in blockchain entertainment, merging curiosity and creativity."

The NFT collection follows an address from Square Enix president Yosuke Matsuda at the start of the year where he expressed hope that NFTs and blockchain technology would become a "major trend" in gaming.

He reiterated his interest in the technology in April, although last month he claimed it was "too early" to make Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy blockchain games.

Square Enix hosted a 25th anniversary livestream last month, announcing the release of Final Fantasy 7 Remake on Steam, a sneak peak at Rebirth aka Remake Part Two, and a remaster of PSP title Crisis Core.

All these words are words.

Ah, but forcing people to use 'your' store by moneyhatting games to be exclusive to it is a-ok tho.

I guess this is also one of those cases where something is bad, unless they're doing it, then it's completely different.

If you're lucky, a receipt that says you own a particular digital copy of a song and no one else does but they can make copies of it anyway.
A receipt indicates legal ownership, though; an NFT doesn't.

Maybe thats what the "if you're lucky" was about.

Gamestop is selling an NFT called Falling Man
It's basically an identically named controversial photo of a man falling to his death from the WTC on 9/11, except with an astronaut helmet.
Staying classy, and charging a grand for it.

Ironically, cross-store interoperability of software licenses is one of those cases where NFTs could make sense as a mechanism. Unfortunately, it would be a pro-consumer move and we can't have that.
