"An' Sprout? I reckon y'all're underestimaten' my boy. He may s'prise you."

Ruffles rubbed his neck anxiously. "Yeah, he's a tough kid, I know. But aside from a little mechanical biz I taught him, all he knows is bandit shit. Lilith too, I guess. Part of the reason you dropped them is to make it so they don't have to have... this life anymore, right? So they don't have to live outside the law, always wondering where the next threat's coming from. I'm just worried that might be all that's left to 'em. Not that they couldn't cope, but it'd kinda make it moot, y'know?"

Pixie considered Ruffles' words carefully before responding, "Believe me, hun, I share yer concerns. But listen, I taught Sprout a whole lot more'an you might think. If he's gotta drop a' Cherry's blood in'm he'll do just fine. I have ta' believe that, and so do you." Ruffles had never heard the name "Cherry" before, but it was clear Pixie wasn't going to elaborate any further.

She looked out of the doorway and down the hall. The two teams had finished breakfast and were gathering on the bridge, "Show's 'bout to start. Un-crumple that note'n keep it with you, will ya'. Might bring y'all some'a that ol' Casino luck." Pixie said with a wink before heading down towards the bridge.

"Please excuse me, Father. My injury has me a bit on edge. I suppose I am just a bit upset at the fact that such a boy is made to live this kind of life. How can your Captain sleep at night knowing she's turning her son into a murdering thief?"

Oh for the love of- Florian rubbed at his eyes in frustration. No, calm down, she's been held prisoner and assaulted no one would feel happy in that situation... doesn't matter that she's probably never left her damn tower before today.

"He is good... he is good man." Man was the right word. Axel couldn't be thought of as a boy anymore that was for sure.

"How do the nobles do it?" Florian asked, still on edge and frankly offended by the slander against the others. "I am told they prefer a less personal approach. Bleed a man dry of carbon instead of blood. Starve them of food or shelter... the man, Bart, we held next door to you; did you hear what he was guilty of?" Florian was actually kind of proud that he managed to hide the scorn he felt for them right now.

"How many could have been fed from the carbon that your fancy clothes cost? How many children starved? Teach a man to shoot and at least he'll kill what he aims at. Nobles make messy killers." He said matter of factly.

Cherry. Well, he had a name. Sounded like Sprout's mother, with that comment about the blood. Jesus... what a mind job. But she was gone. Thoughtfully, he uncrumpled the note, and folded it up neatly before depositing it in one of his many pockets.

Eventually, he came to the door of Aesop's room, and knocked. "Hey, buddy? Can I come in?"

"He is good... he is good man."

Man? So they don't have the stomach to consider him a 'child soldier', then?

"How many could have been fed from the carbon that your fancy clothes cost? How many children starved? Teach a man to shoot and at least he'll kill what he aims at. Nobles make messy killers."

Elizabeth was taken aback by his blunt judgement. Certainly he knew that not all of them were villains? At first she was mad, but as she thought on the subject her anger turned to despair, "I--When people are dying unjust deaths I don't believe it really matters how messy it is. You know of my family, the Maribels, yes? If so, you would know that we aren't a particularly powerful noble family. In fact, the reason my family is so desperate to merge houses with the Basilio line is so that we can tap into their strength."

She curled her hands into fists, clutching her skirt in the process. She was clearly upset, "Weak in the eyes of the other nobles yes, but more importantly, weak in the eyes of our own people. The Santiago bandit family... or banditos as some call them, have subjugated our people since before I was born. I can tell by her accent, you know? I'm sure your Captain could tell you all about the horrors they bring upon our people. How they place the decapitated heads of rival gang members on pikes, filet the skin off of informants, and rape any girl who dares walk the streets at night."

Elizabeth's lip quivered as she continued, "Those monsters hurting my people are bandits, just like you. At least my family is struggling to maintain order and protect our subjects! If you want to say bandits are more honest about the crimes they commit, sure, I'll give you that... but, that doesn't change the fact that good people are still getting hurt for no good reason! Go to your Captain and ask her how bad it was! I'm sure she's still got a tattoo, scar... maybe even a brand that signifies she was the property of those murderers! If she grew up on the streets of Boomhower it's almost a guarantee!"

Well that's me put in my place, isn't it?

Florian had to admit the girl could stick to her convictions and what right did he have to judge? It wasn't like he had lived a blameless life, far from it. And the maidens had committed their fair share of violent acts but they were necessary ones. At least he thought they were... at least the people they fought were capable of fighting back. Unlike those who ruled with an iron fist who kept people weak for their own games.

Perhaps this girl was just seeking help, trying to work the system so she could better protect her people. Though one thing nagged at him. Perhaps it was just his ignorance of the southern noble families, he'd never even heard of the Maribels until the heist so perhaps she could lay the concern to rest.

"And why is your family viewed as weak?"

"Hey, buddy? Can I come in?" Aesop turned up as he heard a knock on the door and Jake's voice.

"Um, sorry yeah just gimme a minute." Ruffles could probably tell something was up, Aesop knew this and promptly went to wash his face of tears in the basin. His face was still flushed red but at least he looked more convincing. Putting on the same fake smile he always did he opened the door to Ruffles. "Hey man, sup?" But his ploy wavered: his eyes and cheeks were red and his voice crackled as he spoke.

"And why is your family viewed as weak?"

Elizabeth was relieved to see he was considering her point. Or at least, he wasn't firing back anyway. She wrapped a finger around her chin in thought, "Well, it really just comes down to resources... capital. The region we control is especially arid, and as a result our water supply is one of the smallest among the dome cities on the Rock. We are a great distance from the Super Nova facility and don't have much in the way of local mines, so travel expenses to ship carbon from the facility are obscene.

When you consider all these factors it is no surprise that we've been relegated as a puppet state for the last several decades. We essentially exist simply because the oligarchy needed us to. Because we are of little value to the other families and haven't much capital, we can't afford a standing army to protect our people. The best we can do is fund and organize a militia, or police force. Sadly they have been corrupted by greed and do nothing as our people are bled dry of the little they have." She paused a moment.

She was convinced Florian was thinking something along the lines of, "Well, why don't you give up your wealth to help them?"

"My family may live in luxury, yes, but that is our right as nobles born under the Maribel name!" Elizabeth sighed. "No... that is what I am supposed to say, but perhaps I should quote my sister, 'We maintain our status as nobles so we can better protect the people. If we were to cast aside our birthright the other families would abandon us and our city would crumble under the weight of the Santiago family.'" Elizabeth stared down at her feet as she continued. "I don't remember her very well... she died when I was young. But I never forgot her words. Without aid from the other families our people would be doomed. I know that some of the nobility is corrupt, but our people need us, can't you see that?"

"Hey man, sup?"

"My buddy's not okay is what's up. Ignore what Pixie said to you, it's bullshit." He clapped Aesop on the shoulder as he moved past him into the room. "I know you joined her as some sorta paragon to better yourself, but remember, she's human. She's capable of being a mean old ***** like anyone else. You're a valuable member of this crew, man."

"--I know that some of the nobility is corrupt, but our people need us, can't you see that?"

Florian had almost blown a vein when she spouted the line about their birthright to live in luxury. It took an extra helping of self control not to burst something out the second she said it. Hell, if she hadn't taken it back who know what he might have done... probably beaten her around the head with a bible while shouting "ALL MEN ARE CREATED EQUAL!!" Luckily that didn't happen.

She made a passionate argument, that was something. But it felt flawed at its core. She made it sound like there was only one way out of the situation, that the people they ruled over were apparently unable of defending themselves. False. He thought. Everyone with a pulse was capable of violence and Florian had seen the a rabble of cowards and beaten men rallied into a fighting force, into something to be feared. Every bandit family starts as a militia if you go far back enough, they simply had the know-how and willpower to take it further. These nobles seemed to claim to lead without leading, always seeking help from others! This was not a leader, this was a beggar! If their way was not working then it was someone else's turn! It was only ancient ways of dead men that kept them in power, yet they had the gall to-

Stop...stop. Florian told himself. Now he was at risk of falling into the same trap the captain was. He was letting himself get invested in the girl because he knew so much about her... and she nothing of him. Or even her family, did she call her sister Cherry as well?

She doesn't understand... and she doesn't need to understand. I do though.

Florian forced himself to go cold and got back to business. He moved away from the wall and dragged a seat from the side of the room as he sat in front of Elizabeth. He motioned for her to sit as well.

"And this Marriage, how will it help your people?" He asked. There was no judgment in his voice, now, he simply wanted to learn.

Elizabeth sat in silence as Florian absorbed her words. He said nothing before turning away from her to arrange a more comfortable seat for himself.

"And this Marriage, how will it help your people?"

For a bandit he makes a fairly convincing priest...

"Well," Elizabeth began, trying to formulate her thoughts as she spoke. "Lord Dio is the patriarch of the Basilio family and among the three most powerful names in the nobility. If we were to join houses we would have access to their resources. Lord Basilio has the largest standing army in the world and could likely exterminate the bandito threat once and for all. He wasn't yet head of the family when he was married to Margaret, my sister, so he did not have command over the soldiers. Now that he is, he can save our people."

She rung her hands together nervously, "In truth, I do not know him very well and would prefer not to rush into an arranged marriage, but it is my duty. My people need this."

Largest standing army in the world hey? So that's what we can expect to come our way.... fun.

The unhealthy thing was that part of Florian meant it. The part that he kept caged up but it was still excited at the thought as it grumbled against being cooped up for so long. It did sure up something for him though. The captain had made the right choice in sending Lilith and Axel away. If Dio took the gloves off and decided to come down on them in full force then maybe all the Maidens would have to scatter, assuming they survived.

"In truth, I do not know him very well and would prefer not to rush into an arranged marriage, but it is my duty. My people need this."

She was honest in this. She wanted to help, she cared about these people she thought were in her care. She had the heart of a leader but lacked the external strength to command, or at least to command through force.

Florin paused in thought and formed his questions, it was a good way for him to keep outside the situation. After a moment he raised two fingers, marking that he had a question.

"What if you make it to the wedding and Dio does not agree to help? What would you do?"

Aesop smiled the tiniest bit in the world. "Thanks man, but its not just that though. I feel... I dunno I feel like an asshole. Two of our best friends just left forever and I'm bitching and fucking crying in here cos the captain doesn't like me. She has every right to not give a shit dude. But, I'm not gonna sit here and moan when I can be doing something productive so c'mon lets get... up an at 'em." His forced energy was clear as day as he grabbed some of his bags and headed out the door.

"What if you make it to the wedding and Dio does not agree to help? What would you do?"

Elizabeth blinked stupidly as the idea sunk in. What if he didn't do anything for her people? No, he had to... right? She tried to speak several times, but the worlds failed to materialize. She didn't know what to say... the thought of his inaction hadn't even occurred to her until now.

Utterly defeated, she hung her head and clutched her skirt once more, "I---I don't know. I really... I really don't know..."

It was clear she'd bet it all on Dio's aid. She was a smart girl, but she couldn't see any other solution. She didn't have any other choice.

"Yeah, man," Ruffles replied as he pushed him out the door. "Besides, I just lost my best friend. I need you around to fill the gap!"

With that, he turned and headed towards the bridge.

"I---I don't know. I really... I really don't know..."

Of course she doesn't, she's still a child. How could she know?

Elizabeth had been made a pawn for those who had placed themselves in positions of power. People like that guarded their power jealously, that was the way of the world all over, no matter how much wealth you had. The sight of her fighting to keep up with a world that cared so little for her and to survive a situation which by all rights should have been the death of her.

It was enough to make Florian feel ashamed of the spiteful way he'd lashed out at her earlier. And it had answered the question he had about Elizabeth.

I ask you this because people I love are putting their lives on the line to keep you safe. They are putting their whole world on the line to make sure you don't follow your sister's fate. I ask because I need to know that you're worth all this risk.

That was what he wanted to say anyway. He wanted to explain everything so she might understand what was happening. It wasn't fair to place all this on her but that was what they had to live with now.

"You will find a way." He said. "By the time this is over you will be stronger than any noble than this rock has seen before you." It wasn't patronizing, it wasn't judging.

"You will find a way. By the time this is over you will be stronger than any noble than this rock has seen before you."

Elizabeth kept her head hung in shame for awhile, thinking through the few words Florian had given her. Though it didn't seem like much it had provided her with a much needed morale boost. She looked up at Florian with a weak smile, "Thank you, Father. Sorry if I came off as a bit rude. I don't know what will happen, but I hope it all ends peacefully. I just don't want anyone else to get hurt..."

****************************************************************************************************************************************************

It had taken longer than Pixie hoped but her men had finally assembled on the bridge. Sleipnir squad had already been briefed and were making final preparations in the hanger. They'd work as support in this mission. Much needed extra muscle in case something went wrong.

Tensions were high, of that Pixie was quite aware. Not only were some of them wary of her command after the incident with Lilith, but sending such a large group into bandito territory? The Iron Maiden had never been averse to high-risk operations, but for some of these men it would likely be the most danger they'd ever been in. Ruffles especially.

I know y'all can handle it...

After spending a few minutes talking amongst themselves, Pixie got out of her captain's chair and stood before her men. Her commanding presence, as always, was all she needed to quell their yammering. A proud, mischievous grin accompanied her words, "I know what some'a y'all'er think'n an' I won' lie ta' ya'. This ain't gonna be 'n easy operation. Considern' we ain't gotta score ta' think about I can see how y'all may find it hard to get motivated. I want all y'all ta' know that this operation's just as, if not more imporat'nt than any ol' score. This is about 'ar welfare. This is about insurance."

Pixie's over-exaggerated hand gestures came in full force to assist her in her explanation, "Back on that train everythin' went ta' shit cause someone ratted us out ta' the banditos. Considern' they focused on me, I reckon we got lucky." She flexed her bicep to illustrate her point. More than impressive for her wiry frame. "We can' have that happen again. The more unknowns there are'n a score the riskier it is. Now..."

She pointed to Silo, "Silo's lead'n this operation. Consider'n information's key here, I reckon his detective background'll come in handy."

Silo scoffed, "That's all well and good, by why's the drunk coming with us? He couldn't detect his way out of a noble's arse."

Pixie grunted in amusement, "I reckon you may find'im a lil' more useful than ya' think. Give'im a chance."

"If you say so, Captain." Silo said with a shrug.

Next, Pixie turned her attention to Ruffles, "Considern' his tenure here, Ruffles is ta' be second-in-command fer this operation. Yer ta' assist Silo in everythin' he asks of you. If somethin' were ta' happen to 'im yer ta' take command of this mission."

The rest of them knew their roles in this. Warren, Barrot and Cameron were the muscle and Aesop was another brain. They'd need as much of that as they could get. Pixie took a second to gauge her men before speaking, "Any questions?"

Barrot stepped forward, "Yeah, so, how do we know this rat's still in Boomhower? He knows we're coming for him, so why wouldn't he just leave?"

"We keep'a close eye on all 'ar contacts, Barrot." He wasn't the sharpest cookie. "If he were ta' flee we'd know who he was. I reckon at that point ar' job'd only be made easier. No, he's bein' protected by the banditos, that's his only option."

Barrot nodded and stepped back inline, "If that's it from y'all I reckon it's time ta' get this party started. I'll see y'all in the hangar."

**********************************************************************************************************************************************************

Two crawlers disappeared down the boarding ramp, one after the other. As before, only a plume of smoke remained. Pixie stood there, alone in the darkness of the hangar. Few remained aboard the ship now. Hardly even a skeleton crew. The coming weeks would be the most dangerous her Maidens would ever witness. She just hoped some of them would be alive to see their new world once the dust settled.

There was no turning back now. This was it.

They were going to war.

[HEADING=1]THE ASHLANDERS - CHAPTER 3: Land of Confusion[/HEADING]

The thirty floor elevator ride down below the surface passed in a blink compared to that of the trip Dio had made to the facility. The small room he stood in was a relic of a time long passed, featuring technology he had only the faintest understanding of. This would be his second trip to the facility within the last month. The project had hit a few snags these past 5 years, but after recent developments things were starting to look up.

The digital display read "B30" before the elevator came to a stop and the automatic doors opened. He dismissed the two armed guards escorting him as he crossed over the threshold and into the large, black room before him. An older man with short, cropped grey hair and a beard approached him from the darkness. He was dressed in a well-kept suit and tie. The man smiled as he offered Dio his hand, "Not used to seeing you down here this often. Is this about that train heist? Heard they took your girl."

Dio shook his hand and chuckled, "'My girl'? Hardly, she doesn't even hold a candle to Margaret's body. Her family has been pushing her on me ever since she started bleeding."

The bearded man shrugged and withdrew his hand, placing them both in his jacket pockets, "Give her some time. Who knows, there may be a beautiful vixen hidden in that kid."

"Hardly," He said dismissively, obviously trying to get the conversation back on track. "Progress report?"

"Phase 2 is all but complete. We still have some additional R&D to do on the neural connection, but it should pass testing within the week." Dio smiled, happy with the news. "What did you expect, Boss? You assemble the greatest minds on the Rock and I'd hope you get results."

Dio nodded, "This is good. Very good."

"Have you identified a candidate for Phase 3 testing? I heard you might---"

"Yes, I have," Dio interjected. "I have been in talks with the Yamato family. Their premier swordsman is up for the task."

The bearded man's eyes widened. He was concerned, "Yamato? You went to the Yakuza? You sure you can trust them?"

Dio laughed, "Who said anything about trusting them? You said the neural link would give us direct control, correct?" The bearded man nodded. "Well then, what's there to worry about? If Masakado receives the treatment, the enhancements coupled with his refined swordhand will make him an unstoppable killing machine. Under our direct control, no less."

The bearded man began pacing, nodding to himself. After considering the idea he came back to Dio, "Alright, okay. As long as we can keep a dagger out of your back I think we'll be okay there." He paused once more before continuing. "So..."

"So what?"

"What of the smokescreen? We have our resources committed still. Should we call them off?"

Dio offered an insidious grin, "Yes, cancel that operation. We will no longer need it. Whether she realizes it or not, the Bandit Queen's actions have helped us tremendously. It has moved our timetable up, there is no question of that, but it still serves as a better excuse than anything we could have fabricated."

"So that's why you sent bounty hunters after her... you're looking to set the whole planet ablaze, aren't you?"

Dio's devilish grin turned into unsettling laughter, "Chaos, my friend! Chaos is exactly what we need!"

"I don't know, boss... once the flame's started it's going to be hard to quell. What's to say we won't get burned before this is over?"

"Oh, I am sure we will to some degree, but you have to appreciate its usefulness. Chaos is a ladder my friend."

The bearded man shrugged, "Sure, but someone's got to hold that ladder for you right?" A sly smile appeared on his face.

Dio laughed, "Of course, my friend! Leave the chaos business to me. The domino effect has already begun, you see. The battle to take down the Maiden will reach everyone's doorstep. Everyone has something to prove by goig after them. Once the bandit families get out of hand and begin quarreling amongst each other the oligarchy will no longer have the ability to control their rabid dogs. The system the nobility has grown so fond of will crumble over night."

"Yes, yes, makes sense. Then I suppose it falls on me to make sure I deliver before the clock runs out. While all the nobles are running around like headless chickens we can move into the final phase unhindered." The bearded man put a hand on Dio's shoulder. "Trust me, Boss, we will deliver."

Dio smiled, "I know you will. To the new world."

"To the new world."

*******************************************************************************************************************************************************

Twelve hours is a long time to stay cuffed to a metal bar, and as you could imagine, Lord Bart was delighted to see they had finally arrived. Still several miles outside the city, Sprout read his topographic map of the region to locate a small cave they could use for the night. A short time later, Sprout and Lilith had set up an environmental tent in the cave. Sprout came back to the crawler once camp had been made to get their hostage, "Come'on now, sir. It's gonna get dark soon an' we can' have ya' go'n freeze on us."

Bart scoffed as the boy un-cuffed him and escorted him to the tent. After securing him inside he stepped back out to the mouth of the cave to join Lilith, "You ready fer tomorrow, Lily?"

*******************************************************************************************************************************************************

A short while after Fenrir squad departed Pixie made her way back to the bridge of the Iron Maiden. Walking down the abandoned hallways felt... lonely. She didn't let it get her down, however. It was actually kind of a relief. The pressure she felt from her crew these last few days was becoming unbearable by the time she'd kicked them all off the ship.

As she crossed the mess hall to reach the bridge she spotted the Gentleman sitting in the corner, alone.

Fuckn' weirdo. Don' midn if I join ya'.

After procuring a bottle of bourbon from the heist stash she walked over to him, plopped down in the seat opposite him and threw her feet onto the table, "Hey, Gents." She said as she leaned back in the seat, taking a large swig of her booze. She offered a cruel smile as she giggled. "I won' lie, I feel like a huge weight's been lifted off'a my shoulders. Sometimes I feel like the world's most deranged nanny."

******************************************************************************************************************************************************

Bennie had stayed up all night on watch. They may have arrived in Boomhower incognito, but it was still a dangerous time to be here. The banditos were biding their time, waiting for the Maidens to show up. It didn't bother him too much though. He'd grown used to these kind of jobs. In fact, sitting at a window all night with a shotgun in his lap kind of reminded him of past stakeout jobs he'd taken.

Kayneth must have been bored out of his mind waiting around in a shitty inn all day long.

Fuck him.

Bennie had no respect for the man he pretended to befriend. He was nothing more than a means to an end to him. A way to get in contact with his former crew.

The suns were getting ready to set once more when Bennie came to Kayneth in his room, "The banditos have been more active today, I think we can expect our friends to show up sometime tomorrow. Will you be ready?"

The Crawler's all terrain tires aided it greatly as it sped along the landscape. Ruffles was pushing it at 90 mph, and wind whipped over the windshield, but even its sound was obscured by the relentless blast of the power metal he was playing on the Crawler's cassette. He had amplified the vehicle's speakers personally. After ten hours, his passengers had long since given up asking him to turn it down, as he would only respond, "driver picks the music. Passengers shut the hell up." The Crawler shot over a shallow ridge, its wheels leaving the ground as it soared and came slamming down. He was pressing the vehicle to greater speeds than it was generally supposed to go, and a couple of his passengers seemed to be clinging wide eyed to anything they could. As he drove on, he sang at the top of his lungs.

"TEAR DOWN THE WALL
LET SILENCE AND MADNESS REIGN!
THERE IS NO FUTURE NOR THE PAST,
LET US DWELL IN AGONY
TEAR DOWN THE WALL ?I?LL WIPE OUT THE STARLIGHT
LET US TEAR IT DOWN ?LET US TEAR DOWN THE WALL!"

He had picked a fairly flat route, so there was nothing to stop him coaxing as much speed as possible from the vehicle. Just off in the distance, Boomhower's dome could be seen. Ruffles whooped as he span the vehicle around in a wide, grinding circle before continuing on at full pelt. Clapping a hand on the shoulder of an irate Silo in the passenger seat, he yelled in his ear, "AS THE OLD GNOME SAYS, I THINK IT IS TIME NOW TO TAKE WHAT IS MINE!"

The chorus blasted again with alternate lyrics and as a guitar solo he'd been anticipated blasted out the speakers, Ruffles braced a knee against the wheel to keep it steady as the other foot pressed hard on the accelerator and he played an air guitar, leaning back in the seat. The song coming to an end, he took the wheel properly again, as the next equally loud song came on.

"Almost there, bitches!"

Lilith looked out over the Ashlands from the cave mouth. Truly, the planet was at its most beautiful during the night. The three moons in the sky, beaming down their gentle purple glow, the heat of the day fading rapidly. She smiled to herself, suddenly feeling a sense of contentment. Maybe things wouldn't be so bad after all.

She listened at Sprout removed Bart from from the crawler, securing him in the environmental tent they just set up. She hadn't had a smoke all day, and was feeling the effects of withdrawal already, worst still, she'd have to wait until tomorrow, since smoking in the tent was a big no no. Come on Lil, it's no big deal. She shook her head, chuckling slightly.

Lilith continued to stand at the mouth of the cave for a few more minutes, hearing Sprout walk up behind her.

"You ready fer tomorrow, Lily?"

She turned to face him, her eyes clearly visible since she had removed her goggles as soon as the sun set. "Axel, I'm more concerned about you." She took a few steps towards him, placing her hands on his shoulders. "Are you ready for tomorrow. You've been through a lot these last few days, and I'm worried your focus will be elsewhere." She tried to look for something in his eyes. "Tell me if you're not up to this, and we'll bail, we'll go to the city, and we'll just let him go." She smiled slightly, her eyes softening, "I won't call you a wuss or nothin'."
