I have reached the grade where schools start trying to teach of parental responsibilities. The best way to carry on such knowledge is, apparently,to have the student watch an inanimate object for a week or two. I was just wondering if its done outside of the American educational system, and what is the escapist's general opinion.

I haven't had to do it in Canada. I don't really think it teaches responsibility, knowing most students, they won't do anything for it, and just get their parent to sign off saying they did.

Just say that you despise children and plan on having a vasectomy as soon as possible. You don't want kids, so you don't need to learn to care for one.

I had to take care of an egg for a week for my child development class (Hey, I didn't pick it, I wanted cooking)

I just have to say carrying it around got annoying, thats the only complaint I had.

Even if that were true, the teacher would probably find some BS excuse to make you do it anyway. They're good at that.

OT: Hasn't happened yet but I feel like it could jump up on me at any moment, even though im in Highschool now

We didnt have to do it in the UK, but some areas with high teenage pregnancy rates did have schemes with mechanical babies and stuff.

Personally, Ive always found my Attitude, Face, And accent tend to be a good enough contraceptive.

Don't care. If you don't like kids, tell them that you are a danger to children. It's more responsible of you to not have kids. I never had to do that assignment.

Is it a requirement that every student does it or what? In my school, students had the option of going through the class, but most didn't. Only the ones that were like "Ooh, BABIES!" did it, and by the end most didn't even want to contemplate having children.

Thankfully I never had to do this, but my school had these "super advanced" robo babies that had all kinds of sensors and what not inside.

One of my friends had to do that so every time I saw him with it, I slapped the baby across the face to make it robo cry.
At the end of the month he decided to put it in the freezer, and yes... it died.

The poor bastards who were assigned them had to carry them around for a month.
They were assigned at random too, so some kids had to do it twice, you didn't need to be in a class to get them.

It counts as 15% of our B period grade, so its pretty much required.

We did health as part of the manditory single gym credit we needed to graduate with an Ontario high school diploma. It was all a bunch of "DON'T HAVE SEX, YOU WILL GET AIDS AND GOD WILL HATE YOU.", nothing as practical as child care. Although, I'm not sure what carrying around an egg for a week would do.

No home ec classes either here...I took woodshop in grade 9 but the rest of my education was mostly math and science.

That sucks. I've heard horror stories about those plastic dolls from hell. One girl I know who did took the class had her doll cry for like 4 hours in the middle of the night and nothing she did would shut it up. She eventually threw it against the wall "breaking it's neck", and ended up failing the class.

It would help if the doll was somewhat realistic, but it's not. I'm excellent with kids, but even I'd have a hard time putting up with that crap.

EDIT: Oh, I see what you are working with. Doesn't sound too hard.

Strangely enough, I'm finishing up my first year of High School and I've STILL never had to do this, despite the fact that I hear about it all over.

Plus, we covered childcare in my health class, as well as how reproduction works. I honestly don't know why I would need health class henceforth, hell, that class got me certified in CPR.

It always sounded like a neat assignment when I used to hear about it as a kid though. And now it sounds like a hassle. Hopefully this is something I can side step.

Until then though, good luck with the egg! :-D
