"Special Award

Markus Persson"

Good to know gaming award shows are as much of a complete joke as every other form of entertainment.
God forbid somebody earn recognition for going from a no-name bedroom developer to becoming a gaming household name.

Well no game really stood out this year in terms of innovation or story. Games like Half-Life, portal 1, old rpg's etc still stand above this year's games.
Did you play Bastion? An innovative presentation of an amazing story.

Honestly the only thing that stands out to me is that Dark souls wasn't even nominated for best game, and L.A. Noire and FIFA were.
Funny thing - bought Bastion on sale, still haven't played it...

I had Skyrim, ME3, Assassin's Creed Brotherhood, Darkness 2 (also haven't touched..), Batman Arkham City...

It was, more or less, a very good year for PC gaming... even if most of those games were sequels. Also, Portal 2, Magica, Trine 2, Binding of Isaac...

Magicka definitely had innovation up the wazoo. Not so much Portal 2, and I haven't played Trine or Binding of Isaac.

Uh, how about Catherine? It combined a story about infidelity with puzzle-oriented gameplay.
I wouldn't be able to get past it's japanese aesthethics and storytelling, so I wouldn't know.
I wouldn't make blanket statements then. :p
"I haven't played any games that stood out this year in terms of innovation or story." would be much better.

I am quite surprised that MW3 and Skyrim did not win a single thing and happy that Portal 2 did so well.
Hmm...

Portal 2 best game? That's pretty surprising. Pleased to see Battlefield beat Call of Duty. And yeah, I'm surprised about Skyrim too.

this being a UK award show Catherine didn't get released over here until 2012 so it did not qualify.

i found these awards pretty good overall better than they usually.

and a special shout to the one to watch award, i went to the dare to be digital bafta party on Thursday and played all the games that were nominated. They were all really a good games and all the guys who made them were really nice as well but tick tock was the best and deserved to win.

I was already sick of Fiddy Cent's ugly mug before this thread...

OT: Interesting choices. Nice to see at least a little diversity.

What's so wrong about Zelda getting a nomination for innovation, it did quite a lot with motion controls I think it deserves some nod for that. Yet people take no quarrel with Bastion getting an innovation nod, a game that's just a top down hack and slash with a really good story. By the way I love Bastion and enjoyed it more then Zelda I just think it's silly how people are reacting.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but weren't there launch titles on the Wii that had the "swing wiimote sideways, your dude swings his sword sideways" thing?

Bastion, on the other hand, is kind of cool in that it does something cool narration-wise that to my knowledge hasn't appeared in games before now.

Zelda is one of the few games to use the sword mechanics within an exploration adventure setting and the way the sword is controlled has changed from the early games on the Wii, as for narrated video games that has happened before Gantlet is the first that comes to mind as it happens to be a top down hack and slash as well, as well as several older games that tend to tell story specifically through a narrator, I know of the many difference in the games it's just the example I'm thinking of. I'm not trying to say either game doesn't deserve this, I'm saying if a game can get a nod for having one guy read off lines to you, the game that uses an experimental control system should get it too.

As a side note why isn't Stacking mentioned in innovation.

I think this is the real question. Playable matryoshka dolls is definitely something new. Also Rock of Ages.

Not bad.

No awards are ever going to be to everyone's liking, but BAFTA at least shows respect for the medium.

I can get behind most of the winners.

I have yet to play that one, but the trailers make it look like it belongs. I will also note I think Bastion deserves a nomination for artistic achievement as well, that game was a joy to look at.

I'm quite disappointed that Human Revolution didn't win anything, depite its myriad of nominations.
