My college teacher told me that when i was being shit, and i guess it stuck with me as it applies to other things as well.

The best advice I've ever heard would be a quote from Mr. Stephen Colbert.
"Don?t be afraid to be a fool. Remember, you cannot be both young and wise. Young people who pretend to be wise to the ways of the world are mostly just cynics. A few years ago, I was a heavy cynic who believed that nothing good could come out of anything. It was the worst time I've ever had in my life. I was constantly either depressed or angry and I don't recommend it to anyone.
As for advice personally given to me, it would probably be something my dad once told me.

I used to have a temper and would pick fights with people I thought were assholes/douchebags/worse people than me.
To be fair, I grew up around criminals and am pretty ethically flexible myself.
A lot of people might say "but criticism is good!" "that's BS advice!" "fuck off, I'll challenge whatever I want if I don't agree", but if you heard that some guy cut the ligaments out of someone's neck, stir fried and fed it to him - are you reeeaally going to argue with this guy anyway?
Plus, it's helped with a lot of things. Got my through high school. Formed my opinions outside high school through my own research, and didn't question shit all during school. Just took the notes, parroted it back to them, and left.
Basically: Your opinion is worthless, thereby irrelevant. Just get your work done and fuck off.
...There's a few other stellar pieces of advice I can think of...but I smell of cut grass, fig trees and dog shit. So I'm going to shower.

As a child I rarely got any good life advice beyond common sense, and even then most of the stuff was kinda counter-intuitive. It hurt more than helped. My parents... as much as I love them, they give the worst advice. I'm not unlike the OP, but instead of being encouraged to be myself my parents instead encouraged me to keep the mask on. Stay safe at all costs. Pursue the almighty dollar. Be a miserable old bastard with nothing to live for. Such words leave scars. Such scars don't heal easily. Even now as I write this I can't help but break down. At least I remember how to cry.

As a result, I have friends in abundance, I am described by many as a 'gentleman', I've punched above my weight a few times when it comes to sexual partners, and I've settled on a career-choice I would never have thought of if I wasn't so comfortable in my sexuality.

Simply means - Don't get mad, don't get flustered. Use your head, analyse your situation and act accordingly, If it ain't working change tactics. Act quickly but don't rush, going too fast makes you make mistakes and that makes you slower. These 2 bits of advice have helped me save lives, so they defiantly count as the best advice I have ever revived.

what ive learned about life hasnt really come from being told stuff - any advice tends to just go through one ear and out the other. I find its much easier to learn about life (and adapt your actions accordingly) through experience. that would probably be my advice to anyone: "if you really want to understand something, go out and do it" or something along those lines.
