Kingkiller's Chronicles - Patrick Rothfuss
I know the second novel was only just released, but I have to list 'The Name of the Wind' as one of my all-time favorite reads. The second book disappointed a bit, but overall if held strong as a solid continuation of the overarching story. Now to wait another 2-4 years for the final volume...
I did not know the sequel was already out. Excuse me while I go someplace where no one will hear my vocal cords explode with squee.

Favorite of all time is the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. I have 3 different printings of it, the entire radio show, the 70's BBC TV show and my towel is always handy.

Trainspotting. I did watch the movie first though.
Really good book. I also saw the movie before reading the book.
I liked that the book actually had the reason it was called Trainspotting. It also showed alot more about the characters, and things that weren't shown in the movie.

All things I liked about the book as well.
Though Robert Carlyle was F-ing insane and great at it in the movie.

The works of Dumas, Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series, and Dune (though I've only read two books in that series)
Don't bother continuing, the series moves quickly downhill after that.
And even Dune Messiah was only really worth reading for the very end

That is unless Perin pulls his head out of his ass.
Okay I agree on mat but what was that comment on Perrin? Perrin, while he's no Matt, he's an awesome character. Pull his head out of his ass?
He does about as much as all the other characters (very little due to the series ridiculous number of main characters that results in the slowest plot ever) and come on, his romance is the most believable out of the lot. Which again isn't saying much given that the romance are a combination of psychopaths, royalty, four way romances and woman who DOMINATE their respective partners.
But I really don't get that comment. About Perrin.
Perrin still is all emo about his part in the pattern, STILL!!!!

After more than 11 books, I would have liked him to show some backbone, yet he still has to be all "I don't want them to use that banner, I can't do this, I don't want this, you have to make me do what I know I should, everyone that looks up to me to be a leader is wrong, I wanna deny, deny, deny, till I have to be what I knew I was supposed to be 8 books ago!"

It got old after Faile was rescued... AGAIN!

Tho since he shares the scene with Galad, I have liked him a bit more. But his complaining has gotten old.

Since he will be the force to 'rally behind' Rand at this big meeting, I can respect that, but it has been a long ordeal of him being the most selfish of all the Two Rivers folk.

I really didn't like that a large portion of the last book was having him realize that the world of dreams was all about belief. Welcome to book 4 dumb dumb!

But still, he isn't nearly half as bad as Elayne. But I can't love all the characters, so what I don't like about the one, becomes a rather large pebble in my shoe.

He has the perfect opportunity to regain his awesomeness in the last book tho.
Yeah I frickin hate Elayne. She has the slowest plot of all the charachters and I swear in ll that in-between a shit load of stuff actually happening with Matt and Perrin, Elayne has a chapter about her preference of tea! She's the only character in the series I genuinely hate (apart from the bad guys who I'm supposed to hate). I genuinely hope she dies......
painfully.
But all right with Perrin I can see were your coming from. But in the final book he did come to a conclusion with the whole "I don't want it" plot you mention. Plus I really didn't find it annoying at all.

Am I allowed to answer House of Leaves again for what seems to be the fifty-gazillionth time? If not, screw it, I am going to mention it again. It is probably the single best thing I have read. It is one of the few pieces of media that genuinely scared me (in addition to the honor of being the only book to scare me), and it has a fantastic story/stories. I highly recommend that anyone who is 17 and up read it.
I loved that thing too. It's good to see it get some love around these parts.

Count of Monte Cristo (and yes, I read it WAY before Yahtzee said anything about it, that guy makes it hard to enjoy anything).

If I have to pick something more contemporary, though, I'd say it's a cross between the writings of Dan Simmons (those who are familiar with him will realize it's hard to pick any ONE book of his, they're all so good), or Richard Morgan's Altered Carbon.

Yes, it's better than Neuromancer or even Snow Crash. A brilliant example of the cyberpunk detective story that resonates on multiple levels, both subverting cyberpunk cliches (computers being evil, the main character being a hacker, main character being white, etc) and providing what could be the seminal work of cyberpunk fiction. It lacks the obtuse stiffness of Gibson's prose, using more traditional language and introducing deus ex machinas and specialized terminology sparingly (and then continuing to use these terms to reinforce the concepts, as opposed to Gibson's wave of largely meaningless nomenclature.) And while Snow Crash is excellent, I find the story more interesting in Altered Carbon.

"Get to the next screen."

The Lost Years of Merlin series kicked ass. And then it continued with The Great Tree of Avalon that kinda continued the series.

Right now I'm reading Game of Thrones and its pretty damn awesome

Book: For some reason, my favorite book is a tie between Of Mice and Men and 1984.

Book Series: The only book series I have read (and truly enjoyed) are Redwall and Captain Underpants. I would say that is a tie as well.

'The Wheel of Time' by Robert Jordan.

With help by Brandon Sanderson.
I'm glad you enjoyed those books because I just couldn't get into them. And man did I ever try. I read the first 2 books because it was recommended to me quite a few times. You think it's worth another attempt?

<<<<<<<<<< Guess.

Woot! Another excuse to gush about my favorite series!!! In case you didn't know, I'm a huge fan of The Dresden Files, and pretty much anything else written by Jim Butcher. But mostly The Dresden Files.

Also, I have to say, The Bourne Identity was a freaking awesome book! But I didn't think the sequels were too great. Still, I've read The Bourne Identity at least twice, which is a big deal for me.

Edit: Also, I want to mention some other books that I enjoyed (not that anyone is going to notice anything since this is past the 2nd page).

The Shannara series. Holy crap I loved this series. It's HUGE too. I don't remember, but it has to have at least 17 books. Though it does kinda get a little Final Fantasy-ish how sometimes it doesn't seem like storylines fit in with the rest of the series, but it's still good.

The Coldfire Trilogy. This series has one of the best grey-area characters I've ever seen. Read. Whatever. His name is Gerralt Terrant, and he is freaking awesome. Just saying. Awesome. He's not one of those goody-goody's who becomes somewhat dark but really wants to do nice things. He leans more towards evil than good, but he has somewhat good intentions. I don't know how to describe him, it's past midnight, brain dying...

Chronicles of Narnia. No explanation needed.

The Provost Guard trilogy, the third book to be released in the fall...

And Trickster's Choice, and its sequel, Trickster's Queen...

Both by Tamora Pierce. How I love her books...

Read the first two Shannara Cycles (First trilogy, second...quadriligy?). I've reccomended them to younger readers. They're really good, but I found them to be slightly juvinile.

Read the Coldfire Trilogy, too. It has one of the more unique premises I've ever read, and it was certainly worth the read.

The Assassins trilogy by Robin Hobb although it does extend into a pretty big universe with 4 sets of trilogy's and they're all awesome.
