The best FPS ever on any console

You know, with this it's hard to say really, as the best examples on any given console aren't really pure FPS's. Take Metroid Prime for example. For "the best" console fps I'd have to go with it, however it's technically classified as a "first person adventure". (I must though that it did have some of the best artistic design and the most atmospheric environments in any console game i've seen) While it's core gameplay was a combination of shooting and puzzle elements, it played much more like a pure adventure game than anything. Half-Life, being one of the best game series out there, would seem like an obvious choice but so far every port of it from PC to console has been dumbed down in at least one regard, detracting from it's allure. The same can be said for Doom (sadly). Bioshock would get a nod as well but it plays much more like it was 75% RPG and 25% FPS. UT and Halo, as someone said before, feel more like rehashed ideas from more superior games. So I guess what I'm saying is I'm really left with only one choice. Goldeneye. Besides being the best all around, fun shooter on the N64, it really set the standard for what a console FPS should feel like. Games like Halo, TimeSplitters, and even Call of Duty owe much of their design philosophy to it.

i can understand you bashing HL2 because it isn't the greatest thing since sex, but dont say something like. it just nullifies any possibility you had of making a decent point

i know its a joke but still...

I'd have to put my vote in for Unreal Tournament on the Dreamcast.

It was the most enjoyable for me.

Well, wouldn't (my own biases aside) Oblivion (maybe that was a joke) and Bioshock be RPGs? I don't think they are in the discussion, as much as I think Bioshock is simply an FPS in RPG-clothing...
I don't think Bioshock qualifies as an RPG. It's a shooter with vending machines.

That said, Bioshock might win it for me. It's hard for me to view the Orange Box as a "console" FPS. Valve clearly makes their stuff for the PC-crowd. Rez was also pretty good, I'll admit. Hmm....

I'll go with Bioshock.

No, you're not the only one. Which is why they put people like you into the "crazy house" and not the "crazy 1 bedroom apartment."

Seriously though, I'm curious what you didn't like about it. The episodic content seems like a lazy way to make a buck, but aside from that.. I love em'. Good, quality games.. by a company that at least makes it appear like they give a shit about video games.
Although I hate to say it, it's partly because it utterly failed to live up to its hype. And playing it felt more like a chore than a game. The puzzles are mostly pretty boring, as is the shooting, jumping and driving really. The weapons are uninventive (Exception of gravity gun but that was only really fun in Ravenholm). It just dosen't hold a canle to HL1 in my opinion. The only part I enjoyed was when the Grav gun got superpowered. Also people say it has a great storyline, to which I reply "What storyline?" As far as I recall, Gordon appears in City 17 for no reason, to discover that aliens rule the world for no reason, we must stop Dr. Breen for no reason and then in the end Gordon is taken away for no reason.

Those are my opinions. Plus HL2 fanboys are not much better than Halo Fanboys.

Portal isn't an FPS, it's a puzzle game.

In any case, I think Half-Life 2 is the best first person shooter, because it actually did something with the Shooting genre. And the Source engine was, and still is, a work of art.

I don't really play FPS's but if I had to pick one it would be...um...well I don't know...

F.E.A.R because it mixes horror into the gameplay, I guess..

Or Ultimate Doom..a good old classic that still hasn't died. :)

GoldenEye, N64 ^^

Oh and Bioshock sure gets my vote for story and atmosphere.
I didn't like the controls for metroid but that's just because I wasn't used to them, I heard nothing but praise from my friends.
CoD4 is great but why does every mission seem to involve a helicopter with not enough fuel?
I prefer UT to CS for multiplayer.
Portal was utterly awesome, but I attribute that more to the quality of the script than the actual gameplay (Although there's nothing to complain about in that arena.)

And who remembers Perfect Dark? That was pretty much the game that made me like FPS's. Well, after GoldenEye, but it was better than GoldenEye.

Please, what exactly did HL2 do with the shooting genre?

But you shoot things. In the first person.

HL2 gets my vote, by the way. But my experience with FPS is sadly a small thing. (Curse you, income!)

I think Goldeneye and Perfect Dark started the like on FPS for everyone who played them.

The first Turok games were fun... with cheats on.

If we count PC's (the title says consoles) then FEAR is where I will remain, not even Crysis is that enjoyable.

Higher focus on narrative through fantastic facial expressions on the NPCs.
Added a new dimension to gameplay with the Gravity Gun.

....I gotta go with Metroid prime. Only thing that coukld make that game better would be if they added kraid. Why the bleep was he not in Corruption? You knew we wanted him Retro and you already had concept art. That and the world in Prime was amazing. Echoes and Corruption didn't have the feeling that you actually wanted to get lost and explore.

I'm surprised no-one's at least mentioned Deus Ex. I mean, I've never played that game myself but I've heard good things.

Serious post:

The first Metroid Prime. Best atmosphere of any of the Primes, IMO. And the menu music is the pinnacle of human culture. If you disagree, prepare to be crusadified.

I'd also have to go on to say the controls were pure and utter win. Hold down shoulder button to lock and flick through locks, and then circle strafe around what amounted to big, moving puzzles with venomous teeth of death.

It's a purer form of the Art of Shooter, if you ask me. Just your quick wit and quicker reflexes in a nightmare fairytale.
While I can't say it's the best ever (I only have a gamecube) I will say that it's the best FPS I've ever played. Loved that game, and they ruined it, the bastards. Oh well. Nintendo, hu?

Apologies to anyone offended that I don't have at least a PS2.
