Well shit... i just noticed the "free" part of the title. ... i got nothing but if you want a good non free indie then try Beat Hazard and Miner Dig Deep. Both fun and have extreme replay value becuase they technically dont end. WAIT what about those free arcade flash games people make like Fancy Pants Adventure, do those count?

In hindsight i should have just made it 'Indie Games' overall, rather than just free ones. It would have had much more discussion value, though only in this context. In any case, flashgames do count, since although browser based, they are games and theyre made by Indies, so... yes.

SimuTrans. Open-source Transport Tycoon-style game---if you like non-violent simulations as much as I do (and I LOVE non-violent simulations), you'll be in heaven.

Also consider OpenTTD.

My pick would be Braid because I loved the writing. Sorry that it is mainstream.
Actually, Braid costs money. And I haven't really played many, so I'll say Alien Swarm.

There are a lot of RPGmaker games out there that are really good.

Sadly, some of them are never finished,or lost forever.

Indeed - Mainly of course since theyre mostly made by very small groups, if not one person.

Eternal Daughter is a truly enjoyable platformer with great art and music. It's plays a bit like Metroid, with the gathering of items and abilities. It can be quite challenging from time to time as well.

I also remember a pretty nice RPG similar to Final Fantasy, but for the life of me I can't remember what it was called. I think the first quest was to find a cat in a cave, which led to fighting a griffin. Anyone have any clue what I'm talking about?

EDIT: Found it, Last Scenario is the name! http://site.scfworks.com/?page_id=9

Cave Story, Spirit Engine 2, DF and a variety of roguelikes all come close. Eversion is rather neat, too.

First place, though? Iji. Very definitely Iji.

I would say Columbine Massacre RPG. I mean ,no free indie game has give me a emotion as much as this game.

Another indie art game that I want to suggest but that isn't free would be The Void.
yeah columbine was really intense

and i can remember vaguely a few mods that were so groundbreakingly changing the games that you can call them kind of completely new indie games. such as changing a shooter into an rts or even turn based strategy

Dungeon Keeper 1. Same thing as the previous game, some guys went and remade the entire thing as a standalone installer. I've got it working on Windows 7, so it's quite good compatibility-wise. It features a number of fan-made campaigns although honestly they are quite variable in quality. But it's a good reason to check out an old classic again.

edit: err I realised some of these aren't indie games... but oh well!
Well, theyre not completely mainstream, so its fine. And theyre worth mentioning and thats kind of the main thing.

I'm betting a large percentage of younger gamers have never even heard of it
doesnt change the point, but yeah we need to track down all the free versions and remakes of the classics and start a lecturing thread for the younglings here ;) with tipps and anecdotes from the crypt

I stand corrected - Upon investigation its a bit more mainstream than i gave it credit for :)
Despite having played it, i underestimated the role of the company more specifically. Its still worth mentioning though, since "a large percentage of younger gamers have never even heard of it"

Yume Nikki!!

Well, I'm not sure the game is good but it's definitely a great experience to play at 4 in the morning with the lights off. To this day I keep finding bizarre rooms that I didn't know were there.

Very recently downloaded Nethack as well. I've yet to win even with the "Explore mode" easy play stuff. Even when I can refuse dying/wish for the best gear, the times where you can get de-leveled into having 1 HP, or are suddenly surrounded by tougher, multiplying enemies that would take hundreds of lives to hack your way through, prevent ascension. I think I just suck, but that won't stop me from trying again.
It helps if you play with a spoiler website [http://www.statslab.cam.ac.uk/~eva/nethack/spoilerlist.html] and the wiki [http://nethack.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page] in the background. Something to see what the actual item price [http://img213.imageshack.us/img213/4205/14pricetable.jpg] is helps too.
