If you really want to know then I would recommend the songs that are smooth, forgettable lyrics (you don't want to start singing along when you are supposed to be paying attention to your significant other), and I would say something that they like. I was with a girl that had us listen to Dashboard Confessional. I am not a fan of them as I think the lead singer is a little whiny, but she was , and it was fine for background noise to me. Go with what you like, but keep it mellow.
