Seeing as comics just add and drop continuity and details all the time, I never understood why DC didn't just change his name to "Shazam"

It would have been an interesting fact for the Wikipedia entry; but seeing as everyone knows him as Shazam anyway, why fight so hard to keep calling him Captain Marvel? It only creates confusion and probably hurt sales.

Well, because comics are weird. That's the only real reason.
Because naming a character after the character that gives him his powers just sounds pretty silly to me.

DC's Captain Marvel(and family) all get their powers from the wizard Shazam.

I wonder if Robin is just as bad as Marvel's Captain Marvel in terms of who's been it. Actually, I think it might be worse.

You don't seem to like Captain Mar-Vell or Ms. Marvel a lot?

Kind of a shame, becasue they are two of my favorite Marvel Characters.

But yes you forgot a few incarnations of the Marve Captain Marvel:

During Secret Invasion there was a Skrull that believed he was Mar-Vell for real, so he is considered one of the Captain Marvels. Also Ms. Marvel Went by the name during House of M.

Havent read the latest ot he cosmic marvel stuff, but last I saw there was an Evil Alternetive Universe Captain Mar-vell running around.
You're missing out. The cosmic stuff has been an almost non-stop run of brilliance from Annihilation to The Thanos Imperative. It really demonstrates the type of positives that can come from one creative team given plenty of time and space (no pun intended) to play around with.

[and before someone nit-picks me, I know DnA didn't do the original Annihilation]

Oh I know, been reading most of it, probably my favorite Marvel stories these days, just haven't had the time to follow it lately, guess I'll have to wait for the Trade Paper Backs to roll in.

Well, not exactly. Captain Marvel Jr. gets his powers from Captain Marvel and the magic word he says to transform is Captain Marvel. This means Captain Marvel Jr. cannot even say his own name. Isn't that awesome.

Many people who read comics only get into the continuity just as much as they want to. Saying the whole medium is dumb because of some silly backstory is just ignorant.

I argue that it's time we just have a story involving all the Marvel animal-based heroes. I keep hearing about more and more of them... and they'd make as much sense as comics in general these days.

I always thought Marvel's version came first, thus how Shazam came to be. That's insane it's the other way around and that DC's simple printing of the comics couldn't secure them rights over the name. That sucks. Still, both are really weird... sticking to comic tradition.

Side note, I think I would like a show on Ms. Marvel too. Not right away, but eventually. I've tried to figure her out and read up on the whole thing. Still a little headache inducing.

Hey Bob,

Why not make this a 2-parter and do the "Mavelman / Miracleman" fiasco next week? It feels kinda appropriate. ;)

I think Alan Moore's Miracle Man/family parody of Captain Marvel deserves a mention in here, that was a great series, but then once you get into parodies and spin offs well this story could go on for hours.
Considering he was/is called Marvelman, the subject of lawsuits and legal wrangling, and ultimately became the property of Marvel, I agree he deserves a mention.

That was a great episode. I must say though, while the DC Captain Marvel was the original, I liked Marvels version much better. DC always had some strange things going on, Marvel never really went with the weird sidekick thing like DC (We have to forgive Bucky with Captain America, they go back to 1940). No Hillbilly Marvel, or Krypto or Kid Flash. No, "I'll vibrate my molecules so fast whilst simultaneously running at super speeds around this thing and close the dimensions". All that stuff always seemed so kiddy like to me. Marvel, and their Captain Marvel, was a bonifide bad ass with the Negabands giving him some crazy near godlike abilities. They were all about showing the hard side of the world through their comics, and mimicking them really well (Xmen for example).

Great episode, though some of your information was off a bit though. Marvel was Atlas comics originally.

Heh, the worse thing is I knew pretty much all of that. My head too, is packed with way too much unnessescary stuff like this.

Honestly Ms Marvel should just take up the name Captain Marvel, she's earnt it and it stops the neverending legacies going on in the MU. She is also an airforce captain, so it fits.

I really like DC Captain Marvel, his powers, costume and origin story has, as Bob eluded too, captivated me since I was a small child. Shazam! is tag on pretty much every other interweb site or gaming device i use. I hate Marvels Marvel so damm much. grrr.

Oooh... A story about the copyrights of Superman since the court case is still going from last year. That should be a good story itself.

Well, this one was good but it has me liking Captain Marvel a lot more than Mar-Vell. That's just stupid.

The world of copyright law has issues.

Is anyone else now saying aloud/in their head "Comic Books Are Weird!" just like Movie Bob does? It just makes me smile so much.

I'd go off on a tangent and rage about you filling your head with useless nonsense, but then I remembered that I could keep the story of the MGS games straight in my head and suddenly I feel ashamed of myself. :(

Okay, now I really start to think that:
COMICS
ARE
WEIRD!
But its fun to see that the fight between DC and Marvel (i am on there side) is still going on.

I feel your pain, Bob. Thank God I grew up in the 90s and only comics around me was a bit of Duck Tales. I liked cartoons better :)
