Sorry to say it, Bob, but even with a good 14 years of history on the internet, frequenting gaming forums, roleplaying forums, LARP forums, science fiction forums, writing forums, political discussion forums all in German, English, French and Chinese, I have no bloody idea what you are talking about.
That is, actually I do, but I can't believe it to be half as much of an issue. Certainly, hyperbole makes something more obvious, but come on - the cases you are talking about are this:
Set in a specific video game's forum directly after release, some people are critical of the released product. They voice their opinion and are passed off by those who disagree. Words are used that end up dividing the community into two camps, essentially: haters and fanboys.
However for every person making this distinction, there is at least one person "internet savvy" (the internet's equivalent to TVTropes' GenreSavvy) to spot exactly this behavior. For everyone dividing the community in black and white, there is someone denouncing all those who do so.
All in all, I can see where the view that people tend to take many opinions as a personal attack on themselves or their loved hobby comes from, but in the past view years, this no longer holds true. Certainly, it might be because I usually hold a very agnostic opinion on everything (meaning: my standard stance IS essentially "Fair Treatment", because I would not presume to judge one over another due to lack of information or because I simply think people forcing the debate on issues of preference are not worth my time), but that is my good right, is it not?
Actually, that last paragraph did pretty much exactly what you attack in this video - it takes your statement and assumes a need to defend itself from it. Nothing wrong with that, I say. People need to remember that most of the time, it is NOT a matter of what is said, but how it is said.
Well, erm, to conclude this: Apparently, the Internet I frequent is different from the one you are on. That's perfectly fine, I guess - everyone has their own view, and mine and Movie Bob's don't agree here.
