So having been robbed not just 20 minutes ago, I got to thinking what would cause a person to take from another person by force? I hope to keep this under an individual basis and try to stay away from institutions such as government, religion, and businesses since I do not feel they really apply. Just want to bounce ideas.

Desperate circumstances. Occasionally it might be contempt for other people, but the vast majority of the time, it's the former.
Off the top of my head, desperation and a lack of empathy.

In some cases, people are just like "Ah, fuck working, I can get money like this." Though I think that's the higher level criminal. Otherwise, desperation, I guess.
Some psychiatrists theorize there's a learned behavior that makes you prone to stupid and illegal acts, if you combine that with the need for money, you have a recipe for a mugging.

On topic: Greed. It's the base of all human vices. Some punk doesn't think he has to pay for something, or feels that if he (Or she) can take it by force, then they've earned it by right. Political view, nationality, religion, and any other external factor can hinder or help one's greed, but they aren't the cause.

2. Most of the time the people are desperate, but it also might be the new holiday season. Recession + need to buy gifts = desperate measures by some. I told my friend to be careful, he's donating blood as much as possible to get some cash for the holiday season.

So the majority opinion seems to be desperation due to financial constraints. I dunno, that sounds like an excuse of someone that is too lazy to think or act.
