It only riles up people who care enough about someone making fun of something they like.

Jokes are always about exaggeration and misinterpretation, if someone can't recognise that then they probably never laughed at anything.

Ever.
That's kind of a convenient excuse to disregard any criticism. "It's your own fault for getting riled up about us constantly being up in your face about how ridiculous you are."

I'm not against making jokes at someone's expense, but when you pick the same target again and again it starts to resemble, as someone already mentioned, jock behaviour.

Again, the joke was never about Evangelion.

They're taking the piss out of themselves for not being able to come up with anything.

There's not liking a joke, and then there's missing the joke entirely.

Ha! Making fun of yourselves for always making fun of the NGE fans. Nice.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but they only made fun of the actual (obsessive otaku) fans (that even Anno mocks) only once

Shinji, to me, seems to exhibit symptoms of manic depression, or bipolar disorder. The thing about mental illness is that the scars are all internal. So, while some will see a twat who needs to grow up, many people who have lived with someone, or are themselves a sufferer, of the condition would think he needs to be given constant psychological counselling, rather than pilot a f**kin' mech.

Either way, mental illness is still viewed as a joke in the 21st century, and I don't see that changing any time soon.

And yet that penny drops only now, with the first page filled with "*yuck yuck* So deep. Missing the point."

Yes, I get it's a dig at themselves, but it's completely covered in yet more obvious flaming.

Some of it is bound to be flaming sure, but I'd wager that a lot of that 'flaming' is self parody as well.

Mine is.

Poor Corey. Is he just stuck living in Grey's basement of his lavish mansion?
But while we're talking about Eva, as funny as the last panel was, it tells me you're not even trying with Eva anymore. there must be another anime with a heavy fandom/hatedom you can make jokes out of?

Well, the show has giant robots fighting monsters and boobies.
I don't recall the giant robots fighting the boobies... but that paints a pretty funny picture.

heh.
Hahaha, English grammar for beginners^^. I'll just leave it like that for general amusement.

While I do love it when someone like Grey takes a poke at Eva, I do hope he doesn't rely too much on it.

The satire works because it's in small bursts. I think it'd lose its magic if he kept doing one every month or so.

Is this seriously what you're going to do EVERY SINGLE TIME you can't think of what to make? Are you NEVER gonna stop beating this dead horse? Seriously, if you can't find any new material to use, then go back and make comics about old games, or political issues, or whatever. The constant piling of Evangelion comics isn't even funny more, it's just boring and predictable.
Welcome to metahumour, where the joke is you.

Everyone knows that the endless ragging on Evangelion is not in and of itself funny any more. What's actually funny is that the comic is preempting your reaction to ragging on evangelion without actually needing to do it. So congratulations, thanks for unwittingly bringing joy into the lives of many.

I always find it funny when people do this, because mental illness in Japan operates on a completely different (anti-Freudian) understanding and does not generally share our diagnostic criteria. The emphasis is far more on correcting flaws in social functioning rather than attempting to alter or treat underlying personality problems.

Bipolar disorder doesn't go away once a person realizes that they don't need to worry what others think about them. That kind of "oh, you're just worrying too much" response is a very Japanese way of thinking about mental illness.

Question: Am I the only person who liked "Nadia and the Secret Blue Water" more than "Evangelion"?

I'm sorry, but seeing you name among the first comments set me off laughing again.

Cory is not living in our basement, and if he is, I certainly did not know about it. Maybe Grey has him chained down there and that must be the reason he has a spider in his panel, because we have some serious black widows down there...

I think if ran my own webcomic about games I'd resort to this alot too. I mean Christ I can barely think up material for an ask-X doodle blog on tumblr. I need people to think for me and send shit in.

And yes making fun of Eva is never unfunny unless you're not in on the Eva fandom and seen the set of comics poking it as such...so I guess the divide is gonna show up here.

ITS FUNNY GUYS. FORCE A LAUGH. GIFS ARE HARD. :(

What's next, poking bronies?

There's satire and there's jock humor, rubbing elbows and laughing at the nerds.
I'm a brony and I enjoy poking fun at other bronies quite a bit, honestly. It's never mean spirited and most everyone can have a laugh at it afterward. That said the best part about this is how I, someone who isn't a big anime fan, much less and EVA fan, can still laugh at this stuff. Cory and Grey love it too, and that is the cool imo. Plus I just love how Grey is in his classy apartment with that rug and robe. Such an English gentlemen, pretty sure he's poking fun at himself there. British humor perplexes me sometimes, but I'm getting better at understanding it. Baby steps :p

No you aren't because Evangelion is a rather weird animal. All those people are totally correct when they talk about it being really important to mecha anime and actually pretty revolutionary, and it isn't a bad show. However it's not a show I'd like to go back and rewatch. You see it once, read about what's really supposed to go on, maybe watch a couple parts of it again, and then you're done. I think it's worth watching, but I don't think it's necessarily worth rewatching.
