Ever since Google bought Utube, its gone down hill fast. Google only cares about money and are afraid of the bloodsucking lawyers. You can't see a video without ad interuption all over it.

Not entirely up on copyright law, but I thought fair use said that you could use copyrighted stuff for satire? Or is that only satire on the original source?

Even though I've only seen one, I think it was one on Sarah Palin resigning, I found the video hilarious. But now the fun and happy/new thought police have come.

This is madness!

Well the only reason why I can see this working is because there is nobody in a position to oppose it at the moment. Strictly speaking I believe parody/satire is protected in the US going back to things like Wierd Al Yankovic getting sued for imitating/copying music and lyrics from other people (and then of course changing a bunch of stuff).

The thing is though that somebody like Wierd Al had money to oppose this, and it was his business. In this case it's a bunch of un organized net kids without any money involved, so there is nobody to officially go toe to toe with Constanin from the way it looks to me.

Still, I am surprised Youtube would be pulling this stuff under the circumstances. If these videos are disappearing, I think Youtube is giving in to censorship demands a little too easily.

Copyright. It ruins everyone's fun, but hey - it has to be enforced.

I like the bit you added at the end, as well! That made me laugh.

I hope they do get removed. Not for copyright violations, but because they're utter shit.

The original movie is great though. Best WW2 era movie made, hands down.

I actually have Downfall at #4 on my NetFlix because of the parodies.
I will promptly remove it as well.

Yeah a lot of people don't seem to understand how these things work. It's not like people are making tons of money off of these, and it's not like they're showing the whole movie! The people who try to take these things down are too stuck in their old ways and thoughts on copyright and what is or is not hurting them.

Am I the only one who thinks its really bizzarre that companies are so paranoid about YouTube?

CEO: "Holy fuck, a 4 minute clip from our 2 hour movie is on YouTube! We will lose millions! Billions I tell you! Quickly, to the Legal-Mobile!"

Lackey: "Sir, the Legal-Mobile is out of fuel, seeing as we could not find enough orphans tears, and the dreams of terminally ill patients to crush into fuel."

CEO: "Godamnit Bob, what the hell do I pay you for! Screw it, we'll take the SS Assfuck! Make sure the cooler is stocked with infants, in case I get the munchies along the way."

Lackey: "Yes sir."

What the hell. I dealeted my medokerly made 1 and a half year old one just as I read the title to this one. I am already in enough trouble with WMG, UMG, and sony, might as well not get another anoying email, but this time, actually go against my account completly. I remember uploading a left 4 dead 2 intro parady, and before it was done uploading, I saw "May contain content owned by others." It was some sports company that thinks they own EA, and EA apperently thinks it owns valve. what the h*ll is wrong with the internet these days?

Recently I spoke to an artist that uses collages and multimedia in his art here in Japan, and he talked about the rising difficulty imposed by these corporate suits equating ANY use of copyrighted material as 'criminal'. There should be no 'length limit' or 'percentage rule' or 'time limit'. There should only be a rule of context, and when such materials are used reasonably as means for creative works, they should not be subject to shortsighted blanket reactions such as the ones by Constantin Film.

Incidentally, the trend to constantly push back and limit what becomes public domain is also a problem, and is related. Of course, The Downfall is nowhere near becoming PD, but it never ever will. Even Happy Birthday song is not - despite being integral in our tradition and culture. Every time we sing it, we are using a product! Amendments to PD provisions have made it possible that art can NEVER become PD.

It was, a long time ago, that the death of the author was the only definition for entering the public domain. Is it really right for these companies to own and lord over the right to art, in the way they do now? We wouldn't have much in the way of art, genres and movements if laws of today existed in the past. Art as we know it today was 100% communal in its formation, which is something very hard to do today.

This thread is just BEGGING to break Godwin's law

But seriously, the irony of supressing a popular movement for the sake of rigid, authoritarian rules of conduct can't help but strike people, can't it?
