Ok, so i just got done watching the original Starwars Trilogy with... myself. And i notice something... odd.

The Emperor has no motivation. Why does he want to rule the Galaxy? You see, power, is a means. Not an end. And a means to... what end? Whats his motivation. He's already basically wiped the Jedi out. So why does he want power? It just doesn't make sense to me. So i ask you Escapists, what is the Emperors motivation?
No everything is a means to get power, the acquisition of power is one of the most basic human drives

Yes, everyone wants power. But power is a means, not an end. So why?

Let me ask it this way. If you had ultimate power, what would you do? Would you just say "i have ultimate power. Sweet." and then do nothing? No, you'd use it for something. A nice house, cars, your own personal Island, women, drugs. You'd use power to get what you want.

So what does the Emperor want? What is he going to use "Unlimited Power!!!" for?
To rule the Galaxy undisputed. What's so hard to get really? Quite simple. He wanted to conquer and rule the Galaxy.

I think the Emperor was like a dog chasing a car; all he wants to do is catch it, but he has no idea what he's going to do with it. All he wanted was power. Maybe at one point he had a solid goal, but somewhere along the way he forgot what he really wanted aside from total domination, and once he finally took over the galaxy (if it weren't for those meddling kids--and that darn wookie too!) he would just sit on his throne and explore the rest of the universe for new things to conquer.

How did Alfred say it...?

"Because he thought it was good sport. Because some men aren't looking for anything logical, like money. They can't be bought, bullied, reasoned or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn."

your avatar is FANTASTIC. My favorite on the entire site.

OT: He wants enough power to make...you know what? I've never seen Star Wars Original Trilogy. I'd just be talking out my ass.
I think my fluffy scorpion is going to cry.

OT: To bring everything under Sith control....I can't think of anything else.

I thought his ultimate end was to create a weapon that was capable of destroying planets. You know because the good guys blew it up right after it was finished and just as they were about to finish it again they killed him and then blew it up again. I mean can't an evil intergalactic emperor have at least one planet destroying space station without a bunch kids blowing it up.

DAMN KIDS!!! STAY AWAY FROM MY GODDAMN DEATH STAR!

For great justice?

He wants to bring the Sith back to power, because in his mind the Sith is the side of the force that is the most important. He wants the power, also, so the government doesn't become corrupt in his mind. He thought that the Jedi council was corrupt and is intent on keeping it from getting that way again. So while we see the Rebel's motivation for stopping him, and we know what he does is really jerkish (like Hitler :O), from his point of view he's doing the right thing, and he doesn't see anything wrong with his actions.

I think it's just because he's a jerk that wants to be a higher level than anyone else.

Seriously though - I never really thought about it - but I guess it is the same old "guy in power wants more power" story.

I know that's what I want.
I know your avatar creeps me out.

OT: It is one of the things the prequels should have explained, but they didn't do a very good job.
His or mine?

have a freakin' muffin. Screw hte cookie, a blue berry freaki'n muffin.

Anyway, I don't care. His ambitions destroyed him much like they did anakin and the emperor as we knew him from the films was the final culmination of it.

For some people, power IS an end. They just want to have control. They don't care about accomplishing anything with it, they have no other goal or ambition. They just want to get and keep all the power they can. There's plenty of real-world precedent.

Yeah, power is known to have a kind of intoxicating effect. I mean, how many self-serving politicians get into high positions despite not really having any kind of good intentions towards the common populace?

His motivation is to be the Ultimate Big Bad, so that aspiring Jedi have someone to target. Thus, when he kills them, he becomes an even bigger Big Bad.

He wanted power, and if he became the ruler of a galaxy for about 2 seconds then stepped down, he wouldn't have power.
