Not to be that guy al thought I am always that guy so I suppose this would be normal for me, Anyhow I love that the best Nintendo game was a rehash of an old game. That aside Arkham Asylum should have won best voice acting because Mark god damn Hamil as the joker was orgasmic. Then again uncharted 2 was amazing in its own right..Perhaps a tie would be a better choice.

That aside not much else to disagree with now to check out this Echo Bazaar you speak so highly of.

Quick update I find that I require a twitter account for Echo Bazaar and therefore cannot play it as I made a promise to myself that I would not use twitter.

Oh wow, gee, what a surprise, The Escapist looks past the sticky gameplay, outrageously short length, horrid, laggy, bumpy multiplayer that is filled with cheaters, crashing servers and hackers, and calls MW2 the best shooter? And the "shooting man's shooter"? Excuse me, what? And Infinity ward knows guns? Are you people high? It's the "hey look at me I'm 12 and I'm teh bestest snipar evah! -man's" shooter. A slightly below average boomfest for kids who think Transformers is the best film ever, because it had tanks and guns and stuff.
So what was a better shooter released in 2009?
For me personally, Borderlands.

But what should have won the award? Something that was just a shooter, not trying to be everything at once, including the second coming. Something that knew exactly what it wanted to be. How's L4D2 sound?

Everything about Borderlands was bland and repetitive, from the constant turnover of guns looking for the next slight increment in damage to the endless same-looking terrain, to the missions that would have amounted to sidequests in a real RPG. If you honestly found Borderlands genuinely more entertaining than MW2 and aren't just bashing MW2 because it's trendy to do so, then I feel sorry for you.

And L4D2? Really? Ok. Yeah, I love rebuying the exact same game as the year before with melee weapons patched in.

Hey, I liked Borderlands more than MW2 aswell. I think it should have won. Yes its repetitive, Yes, you never keep the same gun for more than a few lvls, Yes, the quest were a bit bland and Yes, the terrain is a it bit the same everywhere.

But you know what... It was a fuck load more fun than MW2. I played MW2 with one of my firends and yeh it was fun, but it gets boring after an hour or so. I can play Borderlands for hours, splitscreen with my Girlfriend and across Xbox Live with my sister. And I still liked MW1 more anyways.

Slim pickings last year...

Not just because many of my favorite games weren't nominated...

I was thinking that some of these choices were somewhat dubious, particularly Brutal Legend beating Dragon Age for best writing, but then I saw MW2 getting "Best Multiplayer" and I was like "Oh they must be trolling" and stopped caring. At this point you could give Ekans game of the year and I would only be somewhat surprised.

Cookie for the reference. ^_^

My god, you are a defensive person, aren't you? Do you know the meaning of the word "FUN"? Or are you just defending MW2 because it's what the Escapist told you? (see what I just did there?)
Anyway, Modern Warfare 2 wasn't fun. Played like a bag of bricks falling down the stairs and the multiplayer was by far the worst released during the entire year. Do you know why it was so popular? Because CoD 4 was stonking great. Everyone expected something even more magnificent and the turd of mediocrity that was the final product deserves no awards whatsoever, aside form "laggiest, most hacked and most crash prone multiplayer of the year".

And you did make me laugh with that "I feel sorry for you" thing. Seriously, I fell of my chair. Borderlands was my favourite game of the year 2009, hands down. But I'm the first to admit it's flawed and may seem "brown". But the developers too noticed that and changed the art style and the general atmosphere of the game. And unless you didn't notice, the whole point of borderlands was to be pretty much mindless fun. Nevermind the quests or the plot. Blow off some heads and have a laugh, screw realism. And for that matter, how isn't MW2 "brown"? Oh, wait, it looked like a Michael Bay film, that's why.

If I want a great story and decent action, I'll play a Bioware RPG, if I want realism I play Operation Flashpoint. If I just want to have fun and unwind I play Borderlands. If I on the other hand want to get shot through walls with a hacked rapid firing grenade launcher and about 10 tactical nukes at the same time, in a game that claims REALISM and brownness, I boot up MW 2 multiplayer.

As for L4D2, I didn't particularly enjoy the game myself, but I repeat: IT DID EXACTLY WHAT THEY SAID IT WOULD AND IT DID SO VERY WELL, unlike MW2.

I like how you placed the importance of the PC platform below the DS and PSP.

Not.

Besides, didn't every other gaming-website already announce their award lists two-three months ago? I'm sorry i haven't been a member of the Escapist long enough to figure out if this delay is some sort of Escapist tradition, or just caused by... fill in the blanks? like for instance, you may have thought you could get away with not giving in to this pointless show that we must endure at the end of every year, as if we suffered head trauma by the hands of our disapproving parents and/or spouses, slept in a coma throughout the year and had finally awaken unable to formulate our own opinions, but have ultimately realized you are the only reputable website to have not done so and broke under pressure? Just a wild guess!

But I'm giving this way too much thought... Perhaps i should loosen my Titanus and try to go with the flow. [sub]disclaimer: I do not take responsibility for that mental image.[/sub]

Overall - no. Just no. I could argue about a lot of stuff on this list, and I realize that a lot of it would just be my opinion. But GTA Chinatown Wars not taking the best DS/PSP??? Not even being nomnated??? Also, AaaaaAAaaaAAAaaAAAAaAAAAA not taking the most senseless fun? Just NO.

If I'm defensive I can't even express in words what kind of person wrote diatribe I'm now responding to.
Do you know the meaning of the word "FUN"? Or are you just defending MW2 because it's what the Escapist told you? (see what I just did there?)
Oh no, I believe something different to you! I am another mindless drone! You are on to me, sir!
Anyway, Modern Warfare 2 wasn't fun.
Opinion.
Played like a bag of bricks falling down the stairs and the multiplayer was by far the worst released during the entire year. Do you know why it was so popular? Because CoD 4 was stonking great.
I don't disagree with you. If COD4 has sucked there's no way MW2 would have sold 5 million units at launch.[/quote]
Everyone expected something even more magnificent and the turd of mediocrity that was the final product deserves no awards whatsoever, aside form "laggiest, most hacked and most crash prone multiplayer of the year".
I'm still not seeing what you're basing this opinion on abart from hyperbolic vitriol.

And you did make me laugh with that "I feel sorry for you" thing. Seriously, I fell of my chair.
Thank you, I try.

Borderlands was my favourite game of the year 2009, hands down.
Ok.
But I'm the first to admit it's flawed and may seem "brown".
You'd be closer to the millionth person to admit it, but we'll move on.
But the developers too noticed that and changed the art style and the general atmosphere of the game. And unless you didn't notice, the whole point of borderlands was to be pretty much mindless fun. Nevermind the quests or the plot. Blow off some heads and have a laugh, screw realism.
Isn't that the point of most videogames?

And for that matter, how isn't MW2 "brown"? Oh, wait, it looked like a Michael Bay film, that's why.
I never said it wasn't brown. And did you come up with the Michael Bay movie comparisons all by yourself? It's very clever. Because explosions!

If I want a great story and decent action, I'll play a Bioware RPG, if I want realism I play Operation Flashpoint. If I just want to have fun and unwind I play Borderlands.
All good choices. I never said you had no taste.
If I on the other hand want to get shot through walls with a hacked rapid firing grenade launcher and about 10 tactical nukes at the same time, in a game that claims REALISM and brownness, I boot up MW 2 multiplayer.
I don't deny the MW2 multiplayer has been subject to a large amount of glitches and "hax". Every competitive online multiplayer game is. The larger the playerbase, the more occurences of cheaters and poor sportsmanship.
MW2 has a very large playerbase.

As for L4D2, I didn't particularly enjoy the game myself, but I repeat: IT DID EXACTLY WHAT THEY SAID IT WOULD AND IT DID SO VERY WELL, unlike MW2.
Yes, MW2 completely failed to deliver... uh, what exactly did Infinity Ward and Activision claim it would deliver? If you can produce the copy of their mission statement you're apparently referring to while making these claims that would be appreciated. Because what I played was a polished shooter across a variety of combat arenas with a fast-paced and engaging single-player campaign. MW2s combat is visceral and occasionally punishing. The plot was borderline pulled-from-the-headlines and the chracters if not the scenarios were reasonably believable, depending on how far you're willing to suspend your belief in the interests of fun.
If this was their intention, then well played, IW. For the record, I quite liked Transformers 2, at least any scene not featuring Shia LaBeouf.
People criticise the story of MW2 for being hard to follow (I call these people "morons"), other people say the story is so outrageously ridiculously stupid that it blew all sense of realism out of the water. Once again I refer you to my earlier point - isn't this the point of videogames?
You'll find it's the people playing the games who consider it "realistic", but apart from a number of military operatives currently or formerly stationed in Iraq and Afghnistan who enjoy playing MW2, I don't think the playerbase is qualified to make that assessment.

Your criticism of MW2 stems from the opinions formed by a portion of the fan community, and that's the wrong reason to hate something. I wonder if you've even played it. At least when I criticise Borderlands I do it as someone who finished the game. I don't deny it was fun to run around and shoot things, especially in split-screen co-op with my wife who actually finished it twice and played through the DLC.
It was a solid product. But it was not an engaging one. It felt half done. I asked a few people why I should feel compelled to do all of this fetch-quest nonsense and shoot the same half a dozen enemies over and over? What am I getting out of this? Where is the story going?
Ultimately, it didn't go anywhere, and that's a big thumbs down for me.
The story didn't matter, the people you "interact with" around Pandora's sandbox didn't matter. For example, I remember I was sent rushing back to make sure TJ Baha was alright because he hadn't been heard from for awhile. When I went back there and found his body swinging from a ceiling fan, I would have been hard pressed to give a shit.
At least when General Shephard turned his gun on Ghost and Roach in MW2, I felt betrayed.

And that's the difference to me. Borderlands is an experience I could take or leave. My feelings about it are of complete indifference. It was enjoyable to play purely as a distraction from doing nothing, but once I was done playing I did not feel accomplished in any way.

Snipped the rest for practicality.

I did indeed play MW2. Played it through on regular and then hardened, because I thought the game might be longer than, say, 4 hours and I had missed something. The gameplay was much worse tha what to expect from one of the biggest names in the business. It felt much like bucket of hot wallpaper paste in a sea of tar. All sticky and dragging. I had no trouble following the plot, which wasn't really original or engaging, and I guess it's the curse of every cold war wanking idea to be boring. Nostalgia alone won't drive it forward.

Then I played all of the special ops that could be completed without another player. That was by far the most enjoyable bit of the game. Then fired up the multiplayer, tried that for about a week. And that was about the most unpleasant week of multiplayer I've ever experienced. Not a single IW generated server was lag/hack/cheater- free. And they claimed MW2 wouldn't have any of that... Way to deliver. I know FPS multiplayer quite well, I have been enjoying it for about a decade now. And MW2 is almost the worst I've ever played.

On the point of realism, my issue are the firearms and other equipment. They may look somewhat right, but they have otherwise no connection to reality. And when the game developers market it as "ultra realistic" and the Escapist gives it credit for guns and all that, I just won't have that. I was in the army for 2 years and I have fired most of the weapons included in WM2. I'm no navy SEAL, but I know enough to tell you, and most others, that MW2 isn't realistic. It's a video game. It can't be. I don't really care if it is. I, however get annoyed when someone says it is. Got that?

Shrug at Arkham Asylum. I don't get why people had multiple orgasms with this game. Is it because it's Batman and it doesn't suck? Ok, it's polished and controls pretty well, but is that enough for Game Of The Year status? There is practically no story, the villains are just parading one after the other every 10 minutes with no purpose, there is no real spark of imagination anywhere and the sandboxing feels as if the designers just vomited "secrets" all over the game world, sandboxing without any sense of purpose just like in Brutal Legend, which is the wrong way to do it in my opinion (unlike Infamous for example, where the sandboxing was largely part of the story).

Dragon Age... Yeah. Whatever. Copy pasted generic fantasy love letter to the fans of the Infinity games, no imagination anywhere, no innovation anywhere, story to fall asleep to, and the usual excellent dialogue and characters that are present in all Bioware games feeling too good to be in this game. In my opinion, this is Bioware's worst RPG to date. Seriously, if you've played it just pause for a second and tell me a Bioware RPG that was worse than Dragon Age.

My personal pick for Goty would be Demon's Souls, for reasons which unfortunately many people do not know because they didn't play it enough. Challenge is only a very minor one. Mostly it's:
1) The physics and controls, which are the best I have ever seen in a videogame. I don't mean the ragdolls, they look pretty silly, but the weapon physics, the spells, the projectiles, the way blocking works, the way your character moves, everything clicks together and gives you a feeling of total control. Most of the time you know you screwed up before the enemy kills you or your slash misses, and it's your fault. You also realise that, when you waltz into a narrow tunnel carrying your giant bastard sword and find yourself surrounded by enemies, you are fucked, because if you try to sweep through them your weapon will hit the walls and knock you off balance.
2) The online, which is treated not as a seperate game full of whiny 14 year olds but as a feature that enhances the single player component, either through coop or through PvP, making the game feel much more intense and alive.
3) The atmosphere, the level design, the creature design. Murderous, dark, epic, imaginative in every single corner of the game world, often twisted yet strangely seductive. Every world is like a themed nightmare, but with impressive variety between them. The fact that you have to alternate between them enhances the experience. Running away from the fiery breath of dragons, crawling through the pitch black torture chambers of Latria, conquering the storm mountains, trying to survive through subterranean plagued lakes full of mutated monstrocities, trying to stealth your way below the burning nostrils of the Dragon God, awakening the totally Lovecraftian Old One from his slumber... once again everything clicks together and gives you the feeling that you are on a seriously fucked up but awesome journey that you are going to remember for the rest of your life. In my opinion, that is Game Of The Year material.

I'm personally glad I didn't play MW2 on the PC. As soon as I found out about texture hacks that make your enemies more visible and removes excess foliage to give them less hiding places I knew there was no merit - not to mention I have issues with PC multiplayer gaming as a whole simply because it's rife with people who have a hundred ways to cheat for every one exploit available on a console version.

I still don't recall MW2 being marketed as particularly realistic, and I have read that many of the guns don't properly reflect their real life counterparts but I guess that some things have to be sacrificed in the interests of game balance. I have a love-hate relationship with the multiplayer on the 360 version myself, but it keeps me coming back so it must be doing something right. Generally I'm fairly discerning when it comes to games and I don't play games that are outright terrible. On many things we're probably going to have to agree to disagree.

I agree for the majority of this, although MW:2 seems like it was snubbed for some awards it deserved.

Regardless, I agree whole heartedly with the game of the decade choice, I'm not sure anyone could argue against WoW's truly world changing gravity.

Well you got that right, the PC version was probably the worst version of MW2. But most of the garbage could have been prevented. The odd decision to reduce PC gamers to the console style P2P servers created an irresistible loophole for hackers. It's all very sad, I WANTED to like the game, I wanted more of MW1. It just didn't deliver. I played the 360 version special ops in split screen at a friend's place and that was alright, even though I am possibly the worst FPS player in the galaxy when it comes to consoles and pad controls.

Anyhow, I still don't think MW2 deserves to be called the best shooter of the year by the Escapist. I thought their review and disposition to the game was, and is, ridiculous. The review included outright lies about the game. Compared to other reviews it was quite biased.

And, really, um, sorry about that "what kind of a person" -thingy. I was out of line.

Go BB for winning Best soundtrack. Such epic melt your face off pumped past 11 tracks in a game this generation.
And its nice to see SF4 showing that it can still throw down. Can't wait for SSF4.

I must generally agree with most of those, even though I didn't play like 90% of those titles. I'm especially glad that Empire: Total War won.

Sperglord mode - engaged.
I really, really wonder [nerdrage]WHY SOMEONE HAD MARKED HAWX AS A SIMULATION[/nerdrage]. It was a cool game, but as an IL-2 fan, I found it far too arcadish to be considered a simulator. [nerdrage]WHY NOT ARMA 2 INSTEAD? IT'S A GODDAMN SIMULATION TO THE EVERY SINGLE LINE OF ITS CODE[/nerdrage] I politely ask. As a dedicated MW2 hater, I must also point that the latest Stalker is (imo) superior to any of those choices in FPS award, and I say it as a L4D2 fan.

EDIT: 451th post, time to burn some books to quell the nerdrage.

Agree with everything except Halo 2 for game of the decade. After the way we 'finished the fight', I kind of resent the game.
