My god, you are a defensive person, aren't you?
If I'm defensive I can't even express in words what kind of person wrote diatribe I'm now responding to.
Do you know the meaning of the word "FUN"? Or are you just defending MW2 because it's what the Escapist told you? (see what I just did there?)
Oh no, I believe something different to you! I am another mindless drone! You are on to me, sir!
Anyway, Modern Warfare 2 wasn't fun.
Opinion.
Played like a bag of bricks falling down the stairs and the multiplayer was by far the worst released during the entire year. Do you know why it was so popular? Because CoD 4 was stonking great.
I don't disagree with you. If COD4 has sucked there's no way MW2 would have sold 5 million units at launch.[/quote]
Everyone expected something even more magnificent and the turd of mediocrity that was the final product deserves no awards whatsoever, aside form "laggiest, most hacked and most crash prone multiplayer of the year".
I'm still not seeing what you're basing this opinion on abart from hyperbolic vitriol.
And you did make me laugh with that "I feel sorry for you" thing. Seriously, I fell of my chair.
Thank you, I try.
Borderlands was my favourite game of the year 2009, hands down.
Ok.
But I'm the first to admit it's flawed and may seem "brown".
You'd be closer to the millionth person to admit it, but we'll move on.
But the developers too noticed that and changed the art style and the general atmosphere of the game. And unless you didn't notice, the whole point of borderlands was to be pretty much mindless fun. Nevermind the quests or the plot. Blow off some heads and have a laugh, screw realism.
Isn't that the point of most videogames?
And for that matter, how isn't MW2 "brown"? Oh, wait, it looked like a Michael Bay film, that's why.
I never said it wasn't brown. And did you come up with the Michael Bay movie comparisons all by yourself? It's very clever. Because explosions!
If I want a great story and decent action, I'll play a Bioware RPG, if I want realism I play Operation Flashpoint. If I just want to have fun and unwind I play Borderlands.
All good choices. I never said you had
no taste.
If I on the other hand want to get shot through walls with a hacked rapid firing grenade launcher and about 10 tactical nukes at the same time, in a game that claims REALISM and brownness, I boot up MW 2 multiplayer.
I don't deny the MW2 multiplayer has been subject to a large amount of glitches and "hax". Every competitive online multiplayer game is. The larger the playerbase, the more occurences of cheaters and poor sportsmanship.
MW2 has a
very large playerbase.
As for L4D2, I didn't particularly enjoy the game myself, but I repeat: IT DID EXACTLY WHAT THEY SAID IT WOULD AND IT DID SO VERY WELL, unlike MW2.
Yes, MW2 completely failed to deliver... uh, what exactly did Infinity Ward and Activision claim it would deliver? If you can produce the copy of their mission statement you're apparently referring to while making these claims that would be appreciated. Because what I played was a polished shooter across a variety of combat arenas with a fast-paced and engaging single-player campaign. MW2s combat is visceral and occasionally punishing. The plot was borderline pulled-from-the-headlines and the chracters if not the scenarios were reasonably believable, depending on how far you're willing to suspend your belief in the interests of fun.
If this was their intention, then well played, IW. For the record, I quite liked Transformers 2, at least any scene not featuring Shia LaBeouf.
People criticise the story of MW2 for being hard to follow (I call these people "morons"), other people say the story is so outrageously ridiculously stupid that it blew all sense of realism out of the water. Once again I refer you to my earlier point - isn't this the point of videogames?
You'll find it's the people playing the games who consider it "realistic", but apart from a number of military operatives currently or formerly stationed in Iraq and Afghnistan who enjoy playing MW2, I don't think the playerbase is qualified to make that assessment.
Your criticism of MW2 stems from the opinions formed by a portion of the fan community, and that's the wrong reason to hate something. I wonder if you've even played it. At least when I criticise Borderlands I do it as someone who finished the game. I don't deny it was fun to run around and shoot things, especially in split-screen co-op with my wife who actually finished it twice and played through the DLC.
It was a solid product. But it was not an engaging one. It felt half done. I asked a few people why I should feel compelled to do all of this fetch-quest nonsense and shoot the same half a dozen enemies over and over? What am I getting out of this? Where is the story going?
Ultimately, it didn't go anywhere, and that's a big thumbs down for me.
The story didn't matter, the people you "interact with" around Pandora's sandbox didn't matter. For example, I remember I was sent rushing back to make sure TJ Baha was alright because he hadn't been heard from for awhile. When I went back there and found his body swinging from a ceiling fan, I would have been hard pressed to give a shit.
At least when General Shephard turned his gun on Ghost and Roach in MW2, I felt betrayed.
And that's the difference to me. Borderlands is an experience I could take or leave. My feelings about it are of complete indifference. It was enjoyable to play purely as a distraction from doing nothing, but once I was done playing I did not feel accomplished in any way.
