Now, I haven't been here quite so long as some of you, but still, I've grown very fond of this site we call the Escapist.
I'm aware there have been many "What Brought You To the Escapist?" threads, so I want to try something different.
How about an "Escapist Compliment Thread."
"What's one specific feature of the site that you enjoy more than anything? Nothing is off limits here. What makes the Escapist your site of choice and keeps you coming back?"
For me, it has to be the layout. "Layout?" you say. Yes! Layout. Let me explain... I heard the name 4chan being thrown around, and I've never been much involved with internet communities, so I didn't know anything about them. I hopped on over there to see the site behind the name, and by God, the message(image?) boards I found were patently appalling. And I don't mean content-wise. What I saw were drab gray boxes, haphazardly-widened to fit the content inside, all on a blank, monotone background. It was one of the most unappealing layouts I've seen. Coupling that with the chaotic sizing of text boxes, it's also a pain to navigate the content. It was just so... unprofessional. I then went for a hop and a skip over to the IGN boards, and was equally displeased.
The Escapist is the only forum site I've seen that is ACTUALLY visually appealing. So clean and precise. Everything is measured and uniform and orderly; the vertical extension of a text box when content exceeds the horizontal margins is also nice. Post number, date of post, my name and avatar, post count, join date, and badges are all right there to my left, stacked one upon the other with no clutter or information overload.
The color scheme is great as well. Simple blues and white, executed well. I love the blue striated margins. It makes the immaculate white of the forum jump out and seem more vibrant. Even something as simple as the Topic Index is easy on the eyes (the silver and white gradient for each thread). I could go on, but you have eyes; you can see what I'm talking about.
The compartmentalized design of this site and the simple yet well-done color schemes make the Escapist, in my opinion, one of the most professional, clean-cut, easy to use, and downright pretty sites on the interwebs. I don't know who was in charge of designing this wonderful thing, but I thank you and commend you! I don't know if I would've stayed, had the site been an eyesore.
Now you! This site has been good to me during the moderate amount of time I've been here, and I imagine it's been good to many of you as well. So what are you waiting for!? Compliment this wonderful website! Tell me about the feature you like the most. Strike up some Escapist nationalism with me!
All glory to thehypnotoad Escapist!
