I prefer New Vegas, personally. And Mario 2 for that matter.

But, I can see why this game was picked. And it certainly did innovate more. It felt great, the atmosphere was top notch, the story was well told.

I would say it has the usual problem of sandbox games of having lots to see but little to do. Sure there's plenty of minigames, and good chunk of side missions, but it mostly feels empty. Though it certainly fits better in a desert than the soulless liberty city, I much prefer New Vegas for simply having so much to see and do everywhere.

Meh. I didn't play it, it doesn't look all that special. Oh well, maybe it's good and I'm missing out. Who knows.

Meh, I'm not too sure that this was Top 1, maybe Top 25 *maybe*. It wasn't memorable, and it did the things that other games did. There was no "pushing the envelope." The only reason I can remember RDR is because it's another Rockstar game, which everyone remembers Rockstar games.

To me, Game of the Years should be innovative and try new things, and expand on the gaming as an art medium and gaming as an entertainment medium.

A boring, average game won GotY here. Hooray.
I suppose it could've been worse... hold that thought. I gotta go stand in barren wasteland #245 alone, whistle once, wait 5 seconds for my horse to arrive, and go shoot stuff whilst slowing down time.
Really though, not the best choice.

RDR was far too empty and made up of boring strolls through nothingness. They made it pretty, but still left it completely empty except for the five "random" events that happen over and over again. Once you beat the game the only reason to continue playing was to repeat the same small number of forts that were always the exact same in enemy positioning. They then felt the need to add an obligatory zombie add-on for no reason other than to have a stupid zombie add-on.

Probably one of the least deserving GotY games in the past 5 years.

First off let me just say that I had fun with RDR and its undead nightmare DLC, but I really couldn't really convince myself that I wanted to play it again after the credits rolled. Mass Effect 2 on the other hand has given me >7 playthroughs and I'm still not bored with it, sooooo whatever to each their own.

This was not my favourite game this year, but it definitely deserved the title of Game of the Year. A very good choice, Escapist.

Meh. Mass Effect 2, I think, is a far more innovative and influential game.
But whatever.

Too bad minecraft is too much of a tech demo to be considered. The potential of it makes my pants tight. But I think notch and friends need to fix how things work on a technical level before adding more new features. Maybe it will be "released" next year and be a worthy contender.

I'm so glad this won and not Mass Effect 2. This game is outstanding, the feel of the west is so authentic, and the cast of characters were all likable.
How would we know whether the feel of the old west is authentic? That's like saying Gladiator was a documentary

A worthy winner, really glad they picked it. And it's also great to see that a game that focused primarily on a rich and immersive single player experience won, rather than a game that's really just a multiplayer game with a single player story tacked on. (Every military FPS, I'm looking at you.) PLus, they also brought out Undead Nightmare, for a measly $10.

Props Rockstar - you deserved it.

I didn't like RDR that much. To this day I don't know why everyone loved it.

Am I the only one that really enjoys the multiplayer? Apparently. Maybe because I sat down for two minutes to figure out how it works.

I had more fun with Mass Effect 2, to be completely honest. Not to say RDR was bad, and that it didn't deserve Game of the Year, I just preferred ME2. But this is Escapist's choice, not mine, and if they decided RDR was their Game of the Year, then all the more power to them.

I actually can't think of many games I'd give that title to. Fallout New Vegas, probably, if only it wasn't so glitchy and didn't take a lot of the stuff from Fallout 3 that I liked that actually made it stand out from Fallout and Fallout 2.

Having to

play as Jack after you beat the game really did kinda make me not want to even bother dicking around anymore. His voice was kinda annoying, and he just wasn't nearly as cool as his dad.

Still a fantastic game, though.
Yeah, I had the same issue. I thought it was just me, but apparently not.

I mean, it was a great piece of story telling that added to the game as a whole, but playing as him? Ugh.

I was most upset by the fact that I'd never had a chance to 'hard save' (Non-autosave), which means I couldn't go back and play as John.

The part that most ruined the game though?

I'd already had the ending spoiled by Youtube buggers who thought it would be funny to comment the ending and then 'like' it to the top.

I think I would have had a better experience without that looming over my head the entire time.

I mean, I'd accepted the inevitable by the end.
