I don't understand the big deal about the biting. It doesn't even look like he broke skin, but people are furious over it. Does he have herpes or something? I mean sure, he shouldn't be allowed to do that. He should have gotten a red card.
It's a disgusting aggression and a lot of people are linking the attack with the goal Uruguay scored in the ensuing play. Ordinarily it would be handwaved as an accident but Suarez has done the same thing twice and sanctioned both times for it. There's no reason NOT to sanction him a third time. It's become something of an MO for the guy.

There should be a standard punishment for all kinds of violent conduct, it's silly to judge on a case by case basis.
Hey? Shouldn't the individual circumstances be taken into account?
Well, I mean, there should be a universal system to decide the length of ban for violent conduct. Now they should split violent conduct into categories and increase the ban length as the actions increase in severity and risk of injury. Like a one match ban for spitting and "squaring up", three match ban for punching, kicking, headbutts, nibbles etc. Of course if the offence is severe enough(repeated kicks and punches, head stomps and the like) the length of ban should be decided on a case by case basis but there should still be a minimum ban for that offence that is increased depending on the circumstances. At the moment it's inconsistent and seems that UEFA, FIFA the FA etc make it up as they go along. It doesn't seem fair to ban Suarez for twenty four matches and Song for three simply because one is a repeat offender.
So people that repeatedly get caught for drunk driving should have the same sentence as people that get caught for drunk driving for the first time?

I'm not sure how anybody can justify somebody biting people on the pitch. If you're playing soccer, being worried that the other team may bite you if you're not careful shouldn't be something that needs to be on your mind, ever.

On note for today's USA vs Germany game. I kinda hope both teams just decide to sit in a circle and have a cup of tea for 90 minutes, securing the US's advancement into the elimination round :D

That's a different situation altogether and I'd answer yes to that. It all depends on what your own personal philosophy on justice is. For me anyone that is caught drink driving should be given a driving ban of 10+ years, some might seem this as unreasonable. Breaking the law is breaking the law and it shouldn't matter about past offences. Suarez has been punished for the other incidents, why should he get punished again? I was using that as an example of how inconsistent the football governing bodies are when giving out bans. Cantona got an eight month ban or something for karate kicking a fan in the stand. Zidane got a three match ban for headbutting another player.

Fifa has come up with their sanctions against Suarez, banned from all football related activities for 4 months, and banned for the next 9 international matches.

There's also a fee of 100,000 Swiss francs, and there's some room for appeal for the next 3 weeks.
I'm sorry for the Uruguayans, they'll probably cruse Suarez's name forever after when the 2014 World Cup comes up.

Beautiful goal by Müller, deserved victory. But Germany didn't play as good as you would expect. At least not as good as other potential world champions.

My tip: finale Chile vs Netherlands. Wait, that can't happen? So maybe Germany has a chance to reach the finals, after all. Or we'll get destroyed by France in semi-final.

Edit: Totally misread the calendar, Chile vs. Ned is possible :O

I'm so glad they didn't overlook that.
I seriously think Suarez will never play again since he's been banned for the next 10 games and then forbidden from engaging in any football-related activity for 4 months...
Incidentally, I reckon Uruguay doesn't stand a chance now that Suarez is out of the picture.

Anyone excited for Algeria? First time in the round of 16, even though they're up against Germany and will probably lose I'm proud of them for playing so well. From scoring no goals in 2010 to 6 in 2014, they earned that spot in the next round. I don't think many people had them leaving that group.

Well Forlán is still on the Uruguayan squad. He was player of the tournament in the 2010 World Cup. He's not as good as he was then, and I think he's 35 now so his stamina is lower, but if he can pull something off Uruguay still has a chance.

But if I had to put money on the game, I'd back Colombia.

Guys, look! It's Ann Coulter acting like Ann Coulter!

"America's growing interest in soccer/English football can only be a sign of the nation's moral decay."

What are you talking about? USA was legendary against Ghana.

Also, USA IN ROUND 16. We need to have music to set the mood. You know what it is. [https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=IhnUgAaea4M&feature=kp]

You know, I really, really want to believe that Ann Coulter is just embracing her love of parody. But come on! It's Ann Coulter! This lady has made an entire career off of saying stupid shit about topics she knows nothing about. Still, I never imagined her stooping so low as to turn her dislike of soccer into a rant against progressives and a platform for her hatred of Latin Americans.

Quoting from the Coulter article...

"Soccer is like the metric system, which liberals also adore because it's European. Naturally, the metric system emerged from the French Revolution, during the brief intervals when they weren't committing mass murder by guillotine"
What the fuck is wrong with this lady?

The nice part of me wants to just say that after achieving a net worth of $8.5 million [http://www.celebritynetworth.com/richest-politicians/republicans/ann-coulter-net-worth/] that she doesn't really care how stupid she sounds. She's obviously got a money making strategy going, and when you're making that kind of money, your personal reputation might not mean a whole lot. After all, a lot of her articles, including this one, sound like they are written by someone trying to make money off stupid people but are smart enough to showcase to everyone else just how ridiculous the notions are and that they are perfectly self-aware of how stupid they sound.

However, I'm inclined to believe that she's just a crazy person highly devoted to unusual ideals. She was doing odd stuff even before she was popular.

Either way, I'm more disturbed by the fact she's become successful off of articles like these. If it was just one crazy person, then it wouldn't matter. But she's pretty much shown us just how crazy quite a few people on the religious right are.

But to avoid this just being a political rant in a soccer thread:
Yay! Go USA! Good luck against Belgium. It was nice knowing you.

Yeah, I might be excited for the U.S. going to the Round of 16. Yes, I'm glad that they got out of one of the toughest groups in the World Cup this year. Still, I don't see them going very far. They looked horrible against Germany today, and Germany hasn't looked great compared to a few other teams. Heck, the U.S. could barely keep up with Ghana. They've got no hope against the other teams on Germany's level. Of course, I hope I'm wrong on that, but I'm not holding out too much hope.

Oh I see. I guess that explains some people's reactions. Out of curiosity, what did he do that was racist?

He shouted racial slurs to Patrice Evra, he also neglected a handshake from him.

This whole Suarez affair and some of the reactions I've read to it have reminded me of our previous chat, especially as the vibe I'm getting is that far from cursing Suarez name, this has only made a martyr out of him and the common belief is that this ban was a european conspiracy and yet another example of europeans screwing over south america...

Interview with Uruguay captain as an example.

Granted pretty much all info I got is through the BBC so there is a bias here, I'd be curious to hear what the local papers in your country are saying about this (or better yet: some actual uruguayans if there are any in this thread)

From what I've read in the uru papers and their comment sections, and what I'm getting from my mom (Argentine living in Uruguay) the country is torn between 1) people lamenting the backward image the world is taking from them, 2) people backing Suarez no matter what (including the president), 3) people talking about how FIFA has arranged for Brazil to win because if Uruguay beat Colombia on Saturday then it would go next against the home country, 4) how this would never happen to "weightier" political powers, 5) badmouthing Suarez (no pun intended), etc...
