Why so hateful of War of the Lions? It was the exact same game, except with an accurate translation. Could have done without the ye olde english, I guess, but it did fit with the setting.krazykidd said:Favorite spin off is Tactics ( on the ps1 fuck the war of the lions nonsense).
I'm not sure it was "accurate" so much as it "made sense." It took a lot of creative liberties.balladbird said:Why so hateful of War of the Lions? Lightning as a character may be really popular (which means people apparently have shitty, shallow tastes in characters), but that doesn't mean the brand name as a whole isn't declining in relevance. For instance, the opening sales of Lightning Returns were only 18% of those of Final Fantasy XIII: http://www.siliconera.com/2013/11/27/lightning-returns-lowest-opening-sales-final-fantasy-xiii-game/Whatislove said:I don't know where you are getting the info from Japan from but that is incorrect, Lightning is one of, if not the, most popular FF characters ever produced by Square, Lightning has a huge fan base in Japan and it is partly the reason why the last game in the series centered almost entirely around her.Fox12 said:The series has taken a MASSIVE brand name hit in both the states and in Japan.
FFXIII is nowhere near as maligned in Japan as it is here, and frankly I don't know why people don't like it anyway, because it's just corridors? who played previous final fantasy's thinking the game was all about open world exploration?
Final Fantasy has always been about story, story above all else and then the other stuff - and I quite liked 13's story.
I can't speak for FF taking a brand name hit in the states but here in Australia, EBgames (our biggest and only dedicated video games retailer) sold out of copies of lightning returns, they are taking preorders for their next shipment in march...
You must not have played much Final Fantasy yourself to think that Final Fantasy veterans weren't accustomed to open worlds. Half the fun of the world map was going wherever you possibly could to find extra towns/dungeons and occasionally trying to fight powerful enemies early in order to grind.Whatislove said:FFXIII is nowhere near as maligned in Japan as it is here, and frankly I don't know why people don't like it anyway, because it's just corridors? who played previous final fantasy's thinking the game was all about open world exploration?
I just hope they make it long enough to produce Final Fantasy XXVII, if only to make that joke poster in Deus Ex Human Revolution a reality.Strain42 said:They might stop at Final Fantasy 29, if only because I can only imagine all the fun, jokes, and mockery that'll sprout up when SE tries to release Final Fantasy XXX.
As for favorites, I would say 2 continue to stand out to me.
As far as numbered series go, my favorite is FF9. I just love the characters and the world it takes place it. The story isn't all that great, but the script makes up for it.
As far as spin-offs go...Tactics, no doubt. Final Fantasy Tactics has one of the greatest stories I've ever seen in a game. I love it.
The FF brand has taken considerable damage in the states, and has fallen behind other JRPG's, like pokemon and Dragon Quest (also owned by SE) in Japan. It used to be the biggest JRPG series in the world, now that's not even true in Japan anymore. That's not to say it isn't financially successful (I never said that) it just isn't as successful as it used to be. The ex-president even admitted the brand had taken damage after FF14. There's a reason Type-0 wasn't released in the states.Whatislove said:I don't know where you are getting the info from Japan from but that is incorrect, Lightning is one of, if not the, most popular FF characters ever produced by Square, Lightning has a huge fan base in Japan and it is partly the reason why the last game in the series centered almost entirely around her.Fox12 said:The series has taken a MASSIVE brand name hit in both the states and in Japan.

Yeah, but that reason is the PSP's declining popularity. IIRC the game was actually geared for a Western audience (this is apparently why it's so damn violent for a Final Fantasy game) and was also very well received by those who played it.Fox12 said:There's a reason Type-0 wasn't released in the states.
THANK YOU! LOGIC AND REASON! THEY DO EXIST!alphamalet said:I think Final Fantasy is fine, personally.
Sure FF13 might not have been the best, but I'd play FF13 and its sequels over FF8 any day of the week and twice on Sunday.
FF12 was a great game, and FF14 is a great game. I think Square distancing themselves from the FF13 franchise is long overdue.
FF15 is being made by a different team, and by a man whose track record speaks for itself. I predict it will be a good game.
I honestly don't understand Final Fantasy fans. They throw a fit when a game isn't like their favorite Final Fantasy. Don't they realize that every Final Fantasy is supposed to be different? I think Square deserves a marginal degree of credit for what they at least TRY to do with FF. We are experiencing an industry where genres and franchises are approaching total stagnation. Square can't be condemned for doing the same thing over and over again, but their attempts to innovate just didn't hit the mark this time around.
