I'm honestly not sure. I remember plenty of the first games I played in my early childhood, but remembering which one was the first is trickier. Sonic 2 always sticks out in my mind when I think of the games I played in my younger days, so it could very well have been that. And if Sonic 2 really was the first game I was exposed to, it's no wonder I got into gaming.
Picking up all the rings was probably the first truly powerful loot mechanic to get our young minds addicted :)

I have probably one of the geekiest first game ever. Pong on the TRS-80. But not the cartridge version because we couldn't afford a cartridge, so I had to program pong line by line out of a guide book. We also didn't have any unused 5.25 disks so I couldn't save it, I had to reprogram it every time I wanted to play. I was 7 or 8 years old.

Well, my first gaming [i/]experience[/i] was with the arcade machines at the restaurant that my parents went to often. Little did I know that to actually control the games you have to put quarters in.....

First game I [i/]played[/i] was Combat Mission for the PC. STILL a very fun turn based WWII strategy game.

If I go way back, I think I remember some type of indy-racing game on the C64. The games I really remember as a kid was Sierra's "The Black Cauldron" and "Police Quest II".

Doom (the 1st one) on a Windows 98. God that game was scary when you were 5... and so difficult..

I'm not old enough to have experienced the old Atari consoles..

Mine was some floppy disk game I remember involving a troll that they had at my school. I guess it was educational. It was black and white. Or was it black and green?

This is the first computer game I ever owned. It came with my computer back in 1995 or so

Best first gaming story. Ever :D

I'd like to think that experience lead you to become a top flight game designer, paid millions, as justice ...

LOL yeah standing in front of an arcade machine and thinking you were owning, when really it was the demo run.

I found arcade machines were always an expensive prospect, mainly because I was rubbish at them.

Super Mario Land on the Game Boy, but it was my sister's. My own first game was Jurassic Park for the Game Boy... I sold it and regret that.

Maybe I'll look for an emulator.

Original Metroid. When I was 3 years old. Yes, I have an unusual memory.

Following that, the first game I actually beat was...AD&D, Treasure of Tarmin on the Intellivision, followed closely by Super Mario Bros, Zelda 1, and Iron Tank (a game nobody else has ever heard of, apparently).
Then I played my first Rogue-like (Tower of Doom), and beat Megaman 3 (I couldn't actually find Mega Man 2 until much later due to a shortage).
