Fortress of the Witch King on the Commodore 64. It combined text with a big map that starts out as mostly a black screen, but uncovers forest, mountains, towns and water masses as you send out scouts to map an expanding area. When you have acquired enough troops in this turn based RPG, you enter the fortress which is like a maze until you find and defeat the witch king. There was no back story to explain why he deserved to die, but the name tells you something.

Ahh best game and at 5 years old the level skip button was invaluable for my primitive brain

The one that REALLY got me in to games (yes I was a little older then most at the time) was Crash Bandicoot 2 on the PS1. Absolute awesome.

Well my First COMPUTER game was probably, Lego Island or Goosebumps: Attack of the Mutant.

I don't exactly remember my actual first game tho. My Parents had an NES from before I was born Super Mario Bros. probably, or Kirby, or Dragon Quest

Once mastered you could pull off some incredible maneuvers, such as circle strafing in two axis at once. The trick to avoid motion sickness was to learn the subtle art of changing the direction of "down" at will. See Ender's Game for further explanation.

Believe it or not, there was also a PS1 version that was actually quite playable.

I've got a whole article on it here

Sounds a bit like a helicopter sim sort of thing. Bet that gave you great co-ordination :)

The first game I can remember playing was Digger on the PC.

I didn't even know how to run the DOS program to start the game. I'd beg my father to turn it on and have at it. I thought the digging vehicle was some sort of underground fish with wheels and a green mouth...

You can bet your ass I downloaded Digger HD when it became available.
Just looked this up on youtube, it looks like fun :)

Either Diablo 1 on my dad's laptop or Duke Nukem 3D, I think I was about seven when I first played that. Awesome parenting skills!

I remember this : the original Prince of Persia. Not with the original graphics, mind you-this was the mastered version, where he actually looks Arab and has a turban, etc.

Ooooh...love that game. I still play it. Have you tried Sins of a solar empire? Reminds me a lot of it but it's real time.
I remember playing the original Warlords and some ultima games on my dad's 386.
I have not tried Sins of a Solar Empire, but looking at it now it looks excellent.
