I open my keyboard bindings to see what I use to do stuff...Something a lot of people don't bother to do and ***** about online.

I like to sniff inside the box to get that new game smell
Oh man the same. The case, and the middle of the manual.

I tend to check the controls are good enough to be kept to default. And the Graphics settings.

Get through the story mode first usually.

Or get started with the multiplayer mode if thats what I bought it for.

Check it's trophies/achievements and see which I can get through the campaign without doing it all over again

I check for possible options. If it's a PC game, I start tweaking the settings. I also try to locate the "Enable Subtitles" option. After that, I press "New Game" and I start counting how long it will take the game to "graciously allow" me to play it. If it is less than a minute, I get surprised and always say to myself "We're off to a great start, mate!" If it's more than 10 minutes, I skip the intro.

If it's unskippable, I turn on the power of another console and play something quick and fast while at the same time making snarky comments on the game's ridiculous introduction in an effort to make it funny. (Even more funny if you have a bunch of friends along for the ride) Unless the intro is actually interesting. (very rare)

Just prior to playing it for the first time, just after installation, I have to go and check for patches.

Not sure why, I'm just a bit OCD like that.

If it's a game with third-person perspective, I move my character rapidly around in circles and make it look like they're dancing.

Read the book, I hate going into a game not knowing at least a little bit about it before-hand.
Same here, a lot of my friends think it's weird to do.

I customise the look of my character. If I'm not satisfied, I often don't continue with the game. I can't play a game as some woman with melons or with some guy who looks like arnie. My character in the game is me, so I have to be happy with the appearance, combat style and weapons.

If it's a big release, such as MW2 or ME2, I call everyone nearby who's into games and we have a big drinking session and see how far we can get in one night.
(I rarely game alone nowadays, even with single player games)
