Ironically enough it's his characters that can't talk that come away with the most characterization in the prequels.
Does anyone else find it hilarious that character like r2d2 are more memorable than Qui-gon Gin?
Am I the only one who actually did not dislike Qui-Gon Jin? I think he is arguably one of the best characters from Star Wars...which is not saying much, considering that Star Wars is a "fairy tale in space". Also, R2-D2 is more memorable then most of the casts in all Star Wars movies (and even more so then the failure of a character that is his companion, C-3PO), so to say that he is more memorable then character X is not saying much either.
And also, apparently, George Lucas never heard of Gordon Freeman. While dialogue is an important component of any story, a character does not have to interact with the audience verbally. On the contrary, a lot of people like mute(-like) characters precisely for the mystique they usually carry. Plus, considering how horrible and cheesy dialogue tends to be in Star Wars, the franchise certainly wouldn't be hurt by a few mute characters.
That said, however, the Wookie idea probably would have failed miserably. Wookie's
do talk and they do so in a manner that is guaruanteed to annoy the majority of the audience after a while. Plus, one could argue that a lot of the appeal a Wookie like Chewbacca had would have been lost if one was thrust into a leading role. So while I think it would have made a great Easter Egg level, it was probably for the best to not have an entire game dedicated to the concept.
