The FPS genre has been talked about alot recently with people pointing fingers.
There seems to be this Misconception that the genre can do no wrong, or can do no right.
I am just here to provide a personal history of the FPS genre. This is less of an educational lesson as it is just you sitting back and being entertained by my complete lack of sanity. lets begin.

"Our story begins with a game that pushed the boundries of technology, with it's pathetic flat rooms and 2.5D perspective, it's a hard name to forget. I am of course talking about... Catacomb 3D
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KKYFNWxRY4s

Coming out a year before Wolfenstein 3D, Catacomb 3D was probably the first First person shooter in the 1st Era of The FPS. what are the eras you ask?

1st Era - A Not So Doomed Start. The Catacomb Abyss - Half Life

2nd Era - Pushing The Boundaries. Half Life - Deus Ex Invisible War.

3rd Era - A Bunch Of Crappy Sequels. Deus Ex Invisible War - Present

4th Era - God Takes John Carmack, Gabe Newell, Warren Spector, Shigeru Miyamoto, and Hideo Kojima and combines them to create the Ultra Developer. (But that hasn't happened yet, not intill 2016.)
Present - Barbie Goes Hunting

Anyways, Wolfenstein 3D came in and changed things, instead of Mazes and Monsters (Which is a far out game.) we had Mazes and Monsters, except the monsters were Nazis this time.
The games goal was to shoot nazis and then go on an elevator to win the level.
Sadly after Wolfenstein 3D nazis would never be fun to shoot ever again, because no one thought of putting Hitler in a Mechsuit ever again.

Then came DOOM, now instead of a completely flat level there are Stairs... truly this game pushed everything out of it's way and kicked ass. The truly 3D levels were a sight to behold.
intill the advent of the greatest shooter ever made.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=caOPx-VRbFU

Then there was Halo, that was kinda fun...

Half Life 1 was a game, I think you can play it.

then there was... I don't remember.

I'm tired now, be back soon.

you talked about fps's and missed out CoD 4 and 6 (the best selling game in history i thihnk)... not sure if this is a legitamate fps thread... ;-)

you also missed out battlefield bad company so you didn't list the best fps in history.

and anyway you could probably shorten this thread to "fps's are like marmite, you love it or you hate it". at which point my response would have been "yes."

I didn't understand a word of that, there was no video games in the 1950's.
if your just gonna rant on like some religious nut who just discovered the recipe to chocolate soda, then go somewhere that likes Chocolate soda.

I don't see the discussion value here...

But kudos for not insulting Halo. That seems to be a rarity these days.

Doom is clearly the best thing ever. But seriously I do love the Doom games... except 3.

im on probation so my repsponse will not be as salty as it might other wise have been, but what the **** are you on about?

i didn't talk about the 1950's. at any point. this is a thread about you talking about you playing FPS's. by FPS i assumed you meant "first person shooter", and you discussed this popular genre without mentioning Call of Duty Modern Warfare 1 or 2 (CoD 4 and 6 respectively).

you intend to talk about FPS's you probably need to mention the two biggest, and those are the two biggest, even if you don't like them. and i don't think i was ranting, im confused how you got that so i will move on.

re-reading this post, are you even sure you meant to respond to me?

Well this has piqued my interest, by what measure are MW1 and MW2 the "biggest" FPS's and what source are you using to back that up. I only ask out of interest, not trying to flame.

no no thats fair. im going off sales figures from the stores i know, and i think (but i can not be utterly sure) that MW2 was the best selling fps game in history.

looking it up it turns out im wrong for the xbox 360, where:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_video_games#Xbox_360

MW2 sold 7.5 million copies whereas Halo 3 sold 8.1 million copies. although it was the best selling game for the PS3.

all that said my point was on a thread about FPS's not having either MW2 or Halo 3 meantioned seemed insane.

Whats this about Space Shuttles? They haven't made one that goes to Mars yet. but they will.

Maybe we can stop off at a truck stop in space, get some sandwiches.
I hear good things about them Sandwiches.
my initial response was typed, then deleted as it would have got me suspended, so i will be polite.

are you high as you respond to this?

guys, don't you see the purpose of this thread. it is to show that all FPS fans are equal.
we are all like one giant space sandwich, wrapped together in good will. or something stupid like that. it does not matter what you think the biggest shooter is (even though it's Shadow Warrior, just saying!) it's that we respect each others personal choice even that it is blatantly wrong.

The true alternate history of first person games doesn't start with John Carmack as that is just jumping in to the point where things like texture mapping became popular.

Before that you had wireframe games, bitmaps with 3d effects then solid filled polygons and so on. You are missing some interesting titles like Mercenary and Midwinter.

Doom's interesting cos its multi-level aspect is a lie - at no point does an 'upper' floor cross a 'lower' floor. It is, in fact, essentially done on a 2D map with invisible walls stopping you from going back up drops. I mean, yeah, it's not all visually on the same plane, but behind the scenes it is ;)

System Shock had real 3D environments in 1994, with real 3D objects, not just sprites... also scaling difficulty bars for each element of gameplay. Hate puzzles, turn them down. Combat in three dimensions too hard, make the enemies easier...

Don't forget the millions of copies MW2 sold on PC and PS3, that 8.1 million is ALL that halo sold, so MW2 still blows halo out of the water(sales wise). MW2 Broke sales records for any video game.

Edit: further down on that wiki
First-person shooter ? Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (Xbox 360 & PlayStation 3 ? 11.86 million)
Thats still not including the PC sales.
