I actually played MUDs back in the day, but I'd say the one that got me started on current generation MMOs would be City of Heroes.

Everquest. I visited a friend and he was playing a Troll Warrior, still very low level, but since it was so ground-breaking and astounding to me, I sat and watched him play for 4-5 hours before leaving and buying my own copy.

Played it for 7 years.

Everquest. I played for 5 1/2 years and was a Guide for 2. Huge impact on my life overall.

Hmm, strangely enough I see a progression in my gaming due to RPG gaming. I've gone from SSI gold boxes, to Baldur's Gate, to NWN, and thinking it would be more cool if I could interact with my DnD buddies online, since we were all in the process of pursuing careers and moving away from each other. Then Guild Wars came out and sold me on the MMO genre. Tried Runescape and Wow both, but didn't really enjoy the communities. Then I followed my old guild leaders recommendation to Lotro, and I'm glad I did. Currently I play GW, Lotro and Warhammer (love the pvp in WH, it's really fun).

Tibia, played that game for two years even went as far as to actually pay for a premium account on several occasions then came to my sense and saw that ALL MMORPGS are grind, relentless grind.

LotRO is my first real MMO, though I played in NWN persistent worlds, which are indeed online RPGs, but not massive by any means. I'm thoroughly enjoying LotRO. Of course it helps that I'm something of a Tolkien geek. :)

I've never been into MMORPG's.
Then why post here? You need a "Pointless Poster" badge for this one. :p

I would have to say Diablo II was the point of no return for me.

Guild Wars. I can't even remember what prompted me to buy that game, but it was pretty fun. Not to mention that after I got frustrated with it, I migrated to City of Heroes and have considered it my home MMO since (though I'll occasionally vacation in WoW).

Runescape..

Shut up, I know its dorky, but all my friends were playing it. Damn peer pressure.

The first Pay-to-Play MMORPG I got was LotRO, and I've been trying a few others since then (Warhammer Online, PotBS, Guild Wars). Generally I'll have a 1-2 week mind weakening once a year, in which I feel the urge to try out a new MMO, but I always crawl right back to LotRO.

Star Wars Galaxies, played it for almost 4 years, even stuck around when they turned it into a WoW clone, untill I found EVE Online.

Me, I originally started with muds. Yeah, I'm old ;) But after awhile gave them up and didn't come back until the early days of WOW. That lasted about a week. I haven't tried it since, as it left a bad taste in my mouth. Although 2 years ago I was invited by a friend to play LOTRO. Being a big fan of the series I decided to try it out.

I played the trial and after a month of meeting the people in game, and finding everyone to be so helpful and fun I bought a lifetime acct. Now 2 years later I am still on at least 4 times a week {For a couple hours.} I do have a life. hee hee.
