imagine this for a moment:
you are a games producer. the ULTIMATE game producer. you have been asked to produced a certain game. a certain game that will eclipse all other games before it and after it. a game that defines what a game is and should be. you have been asked to make THE game.

it doesn't matter if its realistic or not. all it needs to be is the game that defines what gaming is about, in essence, the PERFECT game.

you have all the resources you could possibly need and more at your disposal: thousands of the most talented and experienced game creators with more if needed, all the finest equipment, a seemingly infinite amount of money. a patient market who will wait for all eternity if it means perfection.

so you have all the resources, money, and time you'll ever need, for the sheer purpose of making the perfect game...

the question is: what would it be?

The Star Trek Holo-Deck...

Seriously though. Say this is a "little" closer to reality, something close to what that movie Avalon proposed. A game environment that picks up the electro-impulses of the brain and reacts accordingly, also sending information as well (simulating different senses). Although, have something a bit more versatile than just a war setting.

Now if you wanted something based on what games are capable of today? Well....a new mechwarrior sim.

A horror RPG with shooter segments and some old-school survival/horror elements. The good ones, not the frustrating stupid ones.
It would be in a fictional apocolyptic-type world, but somehow be believable and understandable.
Characters would be very likable, and appeal to the intellectuals of the world, whose liveswould be precious to the player because of their situation. Sisterly affection, the questioning of our very society and just plain awesome monster and level designs would make it awesome.

And it would have an exploding zombie whale.

Aw, and I though this was gonna be a thread telling you that you had lost 'The Game' (and if you don't know what 'The Game' is, good for you; for those that did... you just lost 'The Game' by reading this post...).
But yeah, this thread has been done to death previously.

Lawl, an MMORPG western of course.....
Wait a second, that actually might be kind of cool! Saloon fights, horseback chases, beating up harlots with on hand, playing poker with the other.

2d sonic using modern tech and painted graphic like Braid. But then I'm easily pleased.

Either that or a genuinely good zombie MMORPG with no levelling/grinding spread over something the size of a country. Actually that has sparked a thought:

Simple FPS perspective, emphasis on the improvised weapons (condemned 2 style fighting), limited firearms caches (jealously guarded by player groups). A house can be protected to a certain degree so that it is "safe" to sleep in [ie log off and have a life] but zombies will naturally besiege these places.

Keeping yourself fed and watered is a major challenge. In the winter heating becomes an issue. A simple infection you might pick up from a nail could be dangerous without searching out some antibiotics.

Zombies would primarily be NPCs but players could choose to be one (or become one after being turned). These zombies would be a little faster and could help guide the masses.

And so on.

You basically have two choices:
Fun; i.e. basically Pong.
Hyper-realistic; i.e. the Matrix.

GTA clone. Set in 1864, Sherman is marching through Tennessee. You play a farmer whose fleeing Atlanta and ready to rebuild his fortune on the Cumberland Gap. Slavers, Moonshiners, Plantation Owners, Confederate, Union. It would be a glorious meditation on the American identity dysfunction and how those who profit are always the ones above the conflict.

Unfortunately. -THE- Ultimate Game, would probably kill gaming altogether, either, it would be so good that it would end up all anyone wants to play, or, so good that, you can't imagine playing any games ever again, after all, you've played the ultimate game, what's left that can compare?

Anyway, ultimate perfection is all but impossible. But, to answer the queestion...I guess, -My- ultimate game, would be some kind of FPS/RPG hybrid, something massively in-depth, just the right balance of gameplay versus drama, top notch story, good voice actors and well written dialogue. Reasonable graphics, but with more focus on a timeless aesthetic appeal and good design principles.

An mmorpg similar to Megaman Battle Network but done properly.

Everyone would surf the net interacting with other people through their net navi at a hub city where you can do whatever you want like an expansive cyber life sim, or you could even jump to your friends "server" which is their own specially created game world it would be like crossing into another dimension.

It would be an incredible experience.

(I'm thinking a cyber free-roam rpg feel to it with a life-sim edge to it and not like Little big planet.)
