I've decided to spread the love to the escapist and bring some sophistication to these already intelligent forums.

That gentlemen who posted that is a top fellow and may actually be...

But all that is formalities, lets get down to the topic at hand.

The discussion for this evenings sit in is... are people and society still "classy" or sophisticated? Have we lost a bit of class thanks to our technology and the fast pace at which the world seems to run at? But perhaps the most important question for this evening, what does it mean to be sophisticated?

I suppose to me sophistication isn't actually about jazz, a fire place and expensive liquor but it's about taking time out of our life to enjoy the little things. But I guess thats what sophistication is, it's something simple but elaborate... such as enjoying a rainy evening which is a simple pleasure but it's the company, the fire and the liquor that makes it that little bit more special. But these items arn't inherit to class but only the props used in this situation.

I believe that segements of society have lost all sophistication, alot of this is thanks to instant-gratification and the fast going or party life-style. There are still alot of people who add a little bit of class to their every day but class is slowly fading from society. Then again perhaps it is best that some of us, especially youth enjoy the fast life-style when we can. Perhaps "sophistication" is some that should be left for your late 30s and onwards?

Your thoughts on this are what we're all here for. Post away gentlemen.

(Note: All the credit for the atmosphere of this thread goes to Johnford who I beleive posted whats quoted on some kind of soccer forum and to the lady escapists out there, "gentlemen" refers to you as well. It is not a title it is a way of life :D)

You've got it all wrong, it's pocket watches that makes someone a gentleman, you know a man has it all, when he uses a pocket watch.

Considering how heavily sophistication and class are related and the relatively fixed ratios of the former, no I don't think we've become less sophisticated. I also think that better historical and social documentation of the middle and lower classes has probably been one of the greatest things to happen to history keeping.

Errr, I actually DO use a pocket watch.

I stopped using wrist watches because I found them uncomfortable with my motorbike jacket.

I also use a pocket watch! I used to use a carabiner watch attached to my belt buckle, but decided to class up a bit with the classic pocket watch.

Sophistication has gone the way of the unicycle and the pocket handkerchief. It is merely a curiosity, and that disappoints me utterly.

I think there is still some "classy" and sophisticated people around, it's just harder to find them, and honestly they wont act like it all the time.

I would recommend a good scotch but that's just preference. Also what happened to the art of nursing a good drink, what's with all the speed drinking all the time?

People have described me as the classy type, so I'm not particularily worried about that.
I think all you need is a bit of manners, posture, and confidence, all things taken into account.

That is one of the most badass things I have ever read.

OT: I think that there is still sophistication; it is just romanticized less in media and other public forums because sophisticated people don't care for the praise of the more common items of news. However, you don't have to be elitist to be sophisticated. It is like you say, sophistication is being able to appreciate the little things, and being able to be socially comfortable in smaller groups and converse about more ethereal subjects, instead of the latest Top 40 track, or who is wearing what this season.

Sophistication could also be interpereted as using big words not to seem clever, but to clarify the meaning of your words. (and that's me making light of myself)

"Sophisticated" and "civilized" have no true meaning, as they change from culture to culture.

I understand the type of sophistication you are speaking of, and I can assure you that we have no less sophisticated folk than in the past, because there never were that many. Only a portion of the rich were actually like that. That is still true today.

I think as a society we need to relearn how to speak in a sophisticated manner. In classier times past people spoke with wit, panache and superb cunning. The emphasis on politeness and manners meant that people were subtle and understated in their way of communicating. You had to think and read between the lines to work out what people were actually saying.

These days, everyone says exactly what they mean. Which is good, I suppose. Just boring.

I act sophisticated all the time. I always have a pipe on me. And I drink my vodka from a snifter. My pocket watch, monocle, and tophat make me look very ridiculous while smoking my pipe and drink vodka, but it's worth it.

My current financial situation precludes me from buying a suit of sufficient stylishness.

Still. Cuppa tea.

Aye.
