Woo... Good question.

Well, Nostalgia may skew these answers but I dont think I can decide. So I'm just going to give a top (EDIT) six list (in no particular order) because any given day my top choice would be between them.
Cowboy Bebop
Cyborg 009
Inuyasha (shut up)
Speed Grapher
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann (how did I forget this? Probably cause I dont watch Syfy as much as I used to.
and the Read Or Die OVA.

So yeah, take and make what you will of that.

Pokemon, because Pokemon cannot be beaten. In any way ever.
Pokemon is still the greatest anime ever made. Partially since when I was younger I watched it every day and was so happy every time a new season came out, but didn't consider it anime(because I was a hateful Son of a ***** to anime lovers) but even now after I've watched a vast majority, the original Pokemon is still the greatest!

The only Anime I find to be truly great anyway you put it(that I have seen anyway) is Cowboy Bebop. Its got action, comedy, and drama, what more could you ask?

That's a tough one for me. My favourite is Kannazuki No Miko (a real suprise to those who know me) followed by Baccano! (less of a shocker), but I wouldn 't call the former the best EVAH because it's something you either hate or love, and it's not really famous enough to be considered for that title. Baccano! maybe? I'd have to know the criteria better.

Clannad is the best anime ever. None of the earlier submissions in this thread count.

FLCL earns a good second place though.

Absolute tie between Cowboy Bebop and Outlaw Star.

Tenchi Muyo and DBZ get honourable mentions for childhood involvement.

Oh, yeah - FLCL is ace too.

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ROW ROW FIGHT DA POWA!!!!!!!!!
I really love that one, though there are several second place holders that come quite close to being 1st.
For example: Trigun and Great Teacher Onizuka.

Cowboy Bebop always seems to be the one brought up by people who don't like all the bullshit a lot lesser of anime has in it.
A more apropriate quote, personally in terms of TV series i like Stand Alone Complex, Evangelion and of course the master work that is Cowboy Beebop.

I thought Death Note was.... ok. I fucking hate Naruto, Bleach and most of that other crap people surgest as 'good' anime.

Movies i of course like Studio Ghibli, especially Princess Mononoke and Narcissa Valley of the Wind but everything else is also very good (Yes including "The Cat Returns"). Ghost in the Shell (the original dub/version, not 2.0) erm... i like others but i can't think of them right now!

EDIT; Holy shit i forgot DBZ!!
How amusing. I would've thought than on a gaming forum most people would be smart enough to know Popularity=/=Quality.

Suggested as a good anime by who? People who watch a wide range of anime? No. People who are older than 12? No.

I can appreciate Naruto because I started watching at a young age. Saying most anime is crap just becuase you don't like the overhyped suggestions is like saying all games are jsut mindless killing and should be banned because you've never known anything but CoD, from an outside view.

The only anime you seem to like are the ones "popular with those that hate popular".
I hate the idea that anime has stereotypes or ones that are popular are the ones being judged.
It's like racism.

Baccano![/HEADING]
The opening is awesome

Its set on a train in 1930's America, it can be a bit confusing if you dont pay attention but its brilliant regardless. Also its an Anime where the English dub kicks the ever loving shit out of English sub/Japanese dub.
What he said.

It's a tie.

Between Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann.

And Clannad ~After Story~

Total opposite ends of the spectrum I know.

I believe Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, Naruto Shippuden, and Darker Than Black are some of the best, and they are definitely some of my favorites.

Awww man so many good anime to choose from, its hard to pick just one. I think id have to choose Hellsing ultimate.

Runners up would be, elfen lied, trigun, Now and then, here and there. and Rah-xephon.

FLCL - One of the best and its only 6 episodes
Elfen Lied - Only 13 episodes, really gory and full of fan service but really good nonetheless
Slayers - My 1st anime and still one I love
Elfen Lied...umm I think you're confusing fan service with nudity. Yes there is a difference.

OT: my favourites are the following

Neon Genesis Evangelion
Cowboy Bebop
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann
Hellsing, both of them
Elfen Lied
Trigun
Berserk

JemothSkarii

Thanks!

Impossible to say, depends on what kind of greatness you want, really.

Do you want the greatness in sheer emotional power of Grave of the Fireflies, the incredibly nuanced character interaction and portrayals in Spice & Wolf, the noir suspense of the redemptive odyssey in Monster, or the creative approach to visual style and faithful reinterpretation of a literary classic in Gankutsuou?

I doubt my own personal favourite could objectively really be termed "great", but I like it anyway.
I agree with all of those except Monster, purely because I have not seen it or even heard of it.
...Grave of the Fireflies made me cry. Gankutsuou got a lot of flak from my friends for the art style, but I did find it to be an interesting and worthwhile adaption. Spice and Wolf I love the setting and characters, and those plot twists that always pop up and keep you on your toes.
And the TENSION between Lawrence and Holo, just wow.
Two more favorites are Code Geass and Gurren Lagaan

EDIT: Hellsing Ultimate; Crispin Freeman's voice is just so....AWESOME, and the characters are interesting, especially Schrodinger and Rip Van Winkle.

AWWW DUDE, NO-ONE DISSES BLEACH. but on a serious note I still watch /read it and I enjoy it but there is too much FILLER. If I remember correctly they had over 36 weeks of filler on end =_=. I think you can tell from my avatar that it's one of my favourites but I haven't seen that many.(don't have the time(although i have skimmed through dragonball Z and loved it))

On a side note can anyone suggest a good anime to watch or manga to read?
If you haven't seen them, then any of the ones on my list are good, I also recommend things like Code Geass, Highschool of the Dead, Claymore, Fullmetal Panic is also good, it's just a matter of finding a set of tags you like and following.

Yes there was Nudity in context but dude, there was a ton of Fanservice in Elfen Lied.
