There really is no more proof needed to show the MPAA is corrupt as hell, this case seemed to be par for the course at this point.
Why's that? What rating did the movie get? I don't even know what it would get here in Quebec since the line between PG-13 and R by our standards is somewhere between The Kingsmen and Dredd.
As discussed in the article, the gore is beyond what would be accepted for an R-rated movie, but because Eli Roth is the director and Universal is attached to it, it gets a pass. The MPAA has a long history of favoritism to big studios when it comes to ratings. Not sure how it works in Canada, but here even though it's not a government body, the MPAA have given BS NC-17 ratings to indie movies, effectively keeping them out of major theaters.
Here in Canada it's more a provincial thing then a national one, but in Quebec we are VERY lax when it comes to ratings. For example: every Marvel movie has had a G rating, as stated before Kingsmen was given a PG-13 rating, and R is reserved for only the bloodiest and sex filled movies like Dredd. An R rating is such an uncommon occurrence here theatres will usually put up pieces of paper on the doors saying "to see (R rated movie) you need an I.D."

I actually remember going to see The Happening alone as a 13 year old and after the movie wondering why you Americans gave it an "R".

When movies and shows come out on DVD our ratings are even MORE lax, as we have the system be "G", "PG", "TV14", "TV16" and "NC17". I'd say "NC17" is basically porn, but there are actually quite a few pornographic elements which make it into "TV14" and "TV16", especially for animation (outside of straight up hentai, Queen's Blade is the only anime I'm aware of which got a "TV16" rating for its uncensored version, with all other such shows getting a "TV14")

I think you can see now why a few months back I made a thread asking why Americans where such prudes when it comes to entertainment.
In many ways it puts way more emphasis on sexual and language content than it does on violence. Any depiction of non-heterosexual sexuality is held to ridiculous standards (though it helps if you're a major studio). It is prudish, but that would at least be tolerable if they applied the standards evenly, but the MPAA ratings board is basically a black box that isn't even obligated to tell you why a movie gets a certain rating. It's staffed by industry insiders who have vested interests in major studios. The movie "This Film Is Not Yet Rated" is a takedown of the whole system, and there's been even more controversies since that documentary came out. There's no way to really call them out because they're not government. So it puts you in strange situation of actually wishing there was some kind of third-party or government board to make these decisions, though considering the FCC it seems you're screwed either way.

So which one was worse (by whichever meaning of that you prefer :p): this or Human Centipede 3?

Ooh, talking about MPAA corruption and WON'T SOMEBODY THINK OF THE CHILDREN?

That's an excuse to post my favorite story, that may or may not have happened.

The original Star Wars was given a choice between G and PG, and the powers that be went with PG for marketing purposes. However, when the time came to re-release the films, we get the modern MPAA rating board, the one infected with rectal logs. So, it was threatened with a PG13, prompting some minor edits. One of the potential ones was relating to one "role model's" moral behavior.

Lucas may not have made Han shoot first, it may have been busybodies at the rating board.

Unless you fit into the very small group of people who are satisfied with a movie containing nothing but gore, you'll want to skip The Green Inferno.
I think the Saw franchise showed us that group isn't particularly small, even if it isn't block buster-sized.
To Saw's small credit, it tried to give some "justifiable reasons", plot-wise, as to why X amount of people are being tortured to death, basically... Too bad the more sequels it got, the less impact, plot-wise, those particular reasons end up being... #JigsawLagacy

OT: Wasn't this the movie that's loosely based on, dare I say it, "SJW"? Did Eli confirm or deny that suppose "rumor"?

Other than that, it sounds like I should, instead, re-watch The Midnight Meat Train... or one of the two Hostel movies... :p

Oh, it was always explicitly based on that. He's been open about the fact that the characters are making fun of the Twitter activist hashtag of the week movements that have most involved not even know what it is they are standing for.

yes but it fails miserably because the characters actually do go there even though sjw mostly do nothing but ***** online and two it completely misinterprets a serious issue that's going on right now.

off-topic: why am I strangely fascinated with the comment section?

In other words, Eli would have been better off making a Saw remake instead? I mean, "SWJs who do nothing get kidnapped and are forced to do something or die" would have been a much better plot than "SWJs who end up doing something end up dying via cannibalism"...

Also, these comments have more points than The Green Inferno... :p

I am a big horror movie fan, but I am even more against animals being killed or tortured for entertainment. I know that this is merely an homage to Cannibal Holocaust, but even so, I won't be seeing it, as I just can't bring myself to patronize anything remotely attached to that kind of production- it just doesn't sit right with me.

Ironic, isn't it? I love horror movies, right up until I'm actually horrified!

I do appreciate gore and blood fx in my horror movies, though- honestly, you did a great job of selling the movie to me!- but I just can't.

Anywho, question.

"The story we do get sees a group of college activists - played by Eli Roth's wife,"

What happens to her in the film? Put in spoilers. I'm just wondering if he put his wife into a film to get butchered and eaten. Kinda creepy to be honest, probably a creepier implication than anything the film probably has to offer to somebody like myself.
Did you seriously just try to suggest that Eli Roth wants to have his wife killed and eaten, like for real?

I'm actually flabbergasted that someone would have the poor taste to say something like this. I almost think that it might be some sort of passive aggressive attack against Eli Roth simply because you don't like his movie. Almost as if saying, "So Eli - have you stopped fantasizing about eating your wife yet?"

Would you care to explain the reasoning, or logical leaps that you made that went from "Eli Roth's wife stars in his movie" to "Eli Roth wants to kill and eat his wife/have her killed and eaten."

I mean it, I'm really curious to see this!

Not necessarily, but there are people who fetishize mutilation and cannibalism. As long as they're not hurting anybody or anything people can want to facefuck a decapitated goat for all I care, but it would certainly explain a lot about Eli Roth's seemingly unparalleled fascination with gore. Not that I'm implying he would do anything like that, people generally understand the line beween fantasy and reality.
Dude(ette?) whatever -

Other than the fact that you said it would "explain a lot about" him, you absolutely did imply it when you said this:

I'm just wondering if he put his wife into a film to get butchered and eaten. Kinda creepy to be honest, probably a creepier implication than anything the film probably has to offer to somebody like myself.
I'm just left over here with my mouth open going, "WHAAAAA???"

The dude makes horror movies. I've never seen him or heard of him advocating for murder or cannibalism, so I don't know where you get this freaking strange idea from. Do people who make Pokemon have strongly held beliefs about capturing, enslaving and training little monsters (or maybe they mean CHILDREN!! QUICK SOMEONE CALL CHRIS HANSON!)

Why not just say something like, "I hate Eli Roth". Wouldn't that be a little bit more sincere than saying he's a closet cannibal?

I didn't realize that they actually slaughtered animals in the film until I read your comment. I don't think I'll be watching this or probably any of Roth's films in the future. Actual killing for entertainment is very much divorced from simulated killing for entertainment and I'd rather not contribute to it.
As far as I know Roth didn't kill any animals for Green Inferno. DK is saying that he can't support Green Inferno because Roth was heavily inspired by Cannibal Holocaust, an Italian film from the 60's (I think) which included scenes of actual animals being killed.

As for myself, I'm disappointed this is just a mindless gorefest. The trailers made it look visually interesting with vivid and striking colors. I don't tend to like horror films that focus mostly on gore.

Perhaps I should spell it out. The implication that he made this gorey horror film where live animals are actually slaughtered to beat off to his wife being butchered and it then got through the MPAA with an R-rating with support from a major studio. I mean making a film just for the sake to beating off to a scene in it already reeks of Alfred Hitchcock levels of obsession.

The dude makes horror movies. I've never seen him or heard of him advocating for murder or cannibalism, so I don't know where you get this freaking strange idea from. You do know what a fetish is, right? Its something that somebody finds sexually arousing, period. They don't have to partake in it and they can recognize that an actual instance of it would be ethical. For example, there's rape fantasy. Fantasy, as in nobody is being forced to do anything. Its really just one of many of the more extreme forms of sex between a dom and a sub.

Why not just say something like, "I hate Eli Roth". Wouldn't that be a little bit more sincere than saying he's a closet cannibal?
Because I don't, I never met the man. I don't think I even know what he looks like. Neither did I mean to say he was a cannibal. Just saying people have these kinks and it'd explain a lot about his films. Wouldn't be the first time a director fit in some of their kinks into a movie. Hell, we even have that gaming, like with Hideo Kojima.
You've never met the man, so you won't say you hate him. But you do feel quite comfortable insinuating that he put his wife into his movie because he has a cannibalism fetish and that he did it just to "beat off" (your words, not mine) to the scene.

Got you.

Dont know whats funnier, people still wondering why bad movies are keep being made after the likes of uwe boll and michael "USarmynexplosions" bay...

Or SJW types getting their panties in a twist as if this movie has any real live impact.

As the regisseur said: No one will or wont do anything criminal because of his movie. It happens none the less.

Not only that but we are talking about countries where the populace has to make the decision: Hunger, or displacing natives sitting on natural resources (and no its not their fault its a fact).

The situation isnt nearly as black and white as everyone makes it out to be and a real solution would be highly uncomfortable for those that ***** and moan the most on the net, so everyone would rather boo at the peruian (sp?) goverment instead of trying to understand the underlying issues.

Does this movie have a point?

According to the outrage about it... i would say yes... it has a hilarious point that many of those people that throw a hissy fit about it on social media, not because it simply is a badly made movie but because "OMG MUH FEELINGZ!" and "how could you! Wont anyone think about the natives!", seem to absolutely miss. But then again those types allways lagged any amount of self awareness.
