You know, i have got to ask this question here: why only these 4 specific countries? i would understand, if you would limit the giveaway to just the US, since you're probably based there, but when you include ONE country in europe, and AUSTRALIA, why not at least the rest of the european countries? it kind of sucks that I cant win when im living closer to london then the distance between say, washington and new york.

It a legal thing.

US, Canada, UK or Australia all the laws pretty much work together easy (which understandable seeing as the other 3 are all former colonies of the UK).

The EU on the other hand has a whole bunch of different conflicting laws (even though the UK is in the EU it tends to ignore their rules and use it's own (unless the EU ones work better), which is why we don't use the Euro, and why UK citizens can live freely in any other EU country but other EU citizens cannot live in the UK without a valid VISA).

Here is a fun part of the contract:

------

9. MATERIALS/RIGHTS TO SUBMISSIONS. Each entrant agrees and acknowledges that all right, title and interest in and to the entry, and any materials or information supplied by entrant to Sponsor in relation to the Contest (collectively the "Materials"), including without limitation any and all intellectual property rights therein, are irrevocably assigned to Sponsor and entrant retains no rights whatsoever therein, except where prohibited by law, in which case entrant grants to Sponsor a non-exclusive, worldwide, perpetual right to use the Materials. Sponsor shall have the right to edit, adapt, distort, destroy and modify the Materials as it deems appropriate for any use as determined by Sponsor in its sole discretion, including but not limited to the right to reproduce, copy, publish, promote, advertise, communicate, exhibit, transmitting and otherwise exploit the Materials in any way, in any media throughout the world now known or herein after devised, without any compensation to the entrant

------
You are giving permissions to spam you for all eternity and also to sell your personal information.

Just want to make sure people know what they are getting into.

Appreciate the heads up good sir. The Escapist comps are usually full of fluff and annoyance.

These social media-based giveaway things always rub me the wrong way. I know it's kind of a standard practice now but they always just seem so... dirty.

I don't "get" the game.

I get the feeling it's downright obnoxious, even though I'm a ZP fan.

Thanks for nothing Escapists. You guys do know that there is also the freaking rest of the world?
We do! Rest assured we try our best to create contests for as many people as possible. Unfortunately, contest/giveaways/sweepstakes rules and import/export laws in much of the rest of the world prohibit us from including every country.

Is there a non-social media option? I would happily prefer to pay like a raffle instead of give away rights to my data. It feels a little wrong for some reason.

Honestly, that is not exactly what that says. In section 2 of the legal, it states "By participating in the Contest, you acknowledge that you have reviewed and agree to Sponsor's Privacy Policy found at http://www.escapistmagazine.com/content/privacy which governs the collection, use and disclosure by Sponsor of your personal information, including without limitation, your name, date of birth, email address and address."

If you read our Privacy Policy, it explicitly states "We use your personal information to provide you with products or services that you have requested, to respond to questions or communications and to get in touch with you when necessary...We will not share with third parties the personal information you provide except (a) if it is for the purpose(s) you provided it; (b) with your consent; (c) as may be required by law or as we think necessary to protect our company or others from injury (e.g. in response to a court order or subpoena, in response to a law enforcement agency request or when we believe that someone is causing (or about to cause) injury to or interference with the rights or property of another); (d) with other persons, service providers or companies with whom we contract to carry out internal site operations or our business activities (for example, sending out a product or a promotional item that you have requested on the Site); and/or (e) notifying you when we make material changes to one of our subscriber agreements or this policy."

We will not spam you. We will not sell your information.

That section in the legal allows us to do two thing. First, contact you if you win and make the necessary arrangements to send you your prize. Second, share any of the pictures or videos used to enter the contest.

Well I don't want to insult anyone, but it doesn't really feel like you guys are trying. Since march 2011 when I joined, every single contest that I've seen was limited to either just US/Canada or the 4 countries previously listed. I would even kinda understand if some countries like mine weren't in, but seeing the EU not in makes it even harder to believe. I know several sites that have contests with digital and physical prices that are world wide.

Your site, your prices, you can do what you want. Just saying how it feels.

As much as I'm sure less than 500 people will enter (unless it gets viral) I really don't want to have to go through the work of making a clever video that associates a joke related to the playing of hatfall.

Or I may not even be capable.

Fun and amusing hat game. Not interested in the one-in-a-million chance sweepstakes. To date, my best sweepstakes wins involved the use of the head-brain a little, so that I had a chance of winning because of skill along with chance.

Question: When taking the picture/video, do we have to be in it or can we take a screen cap of the game on our computer and send that in?
