The High School Conundrum

High school was all right but, having just finished it, I'm definitely glad it's over.
Well, technically I just finished Sixth Form, but it's basically high school.

I had a pretty good time, there was nobody I disagreed with too strongly and I got on well with most people there. I can't help but feel that maybe it's just a bit of arrogance that has everyone hating on high school. I admit that I felt too good for it once or twice.

It was just a place filled with a lot of people. Most of them slightly annoyed me, a few I liked, and even fewer I liked until the end. But! Those are the words of someone suffering from some kind of teen angst, and that's not who I am! I had a good time at school. I just can't wait to move on to bigger things.

Nah, I really enjoyed highschool. (Not my classes per say, but the experience.) But once it's over, it's over.
Life out of highschool is just better. Those 3 years you have left are gonna flyyyy by.

Ah Highschool. I'd say about on-par with my uni time, although for different reasons.

Highschool was a time few responsabilities, a bunch of good friends, interesting classes (IB ftw ) and learning to balance having a good time with work.

Uni, on the other hand, is a time of much greater freedom, but with more responsabilities, less (though equally awesome) friends, even -more- interesting classes, and marveling at the differences in cultures just a channel apart (from Belgium to England is surprisingly different)

Although I will admit, my circle of friends wheren't exactly your normal bunch of highschool kids. For our senior trip, while everyone went to some hotell somewhere to drink thier liver to dust and party untill thier feet fell off, we went on an extremely enjoyable trip to Barcelona, seeing the sites, going to the beach and sampling the food, all in amazing company. I guess we where more mature than your average highschool kids

I hated the majority of my high school years, and what makes it worse is the fact that College is so much better. In high school, people cared about how you looked, who you hung out with, etc. In college no gives a good god damn what you do. The idea that people who made fun of you for being a "nerd" are going to be working at a dead end job the rest of their lives makes the post-High School days even better.

I'm sorry, but that kind of made me laugh. Depending on how you dress (and carry yourself, to an extent), adults have gone from seeing you as an inocent, naive little kid to a punk-ass, naive teenager. Now everytime you go into stores the cashier is going to have his eyes on you. And just try making an argument with an adult; no matter how valid your point is, you're still a punk, therefore you are always wrong, guilty, and not worth arguing with.

OT: I just finish my junior year, and I have to say its not bad. Not pleasant, but not bad.

then why do I have a lot of adult friends.

OT: Ummm is this american highschool since I think its alot different than what I go to in the sense that you have a middle school I went to a Primary school (grades k-6) then im currently at a highschool (grades 7-12)

Because apparently everyone on this site went to a high school out of One Tree Hill or The O.C.

I liked it, especially my last year. When you get to A-Level, shit is just so much easier in high school.

I wish my high school was populated with hot, muscular 20-somethings, thankfully college is populated with hot, muscular 20-somethings. Most of the guys who weren't obese in highschool had that awkward "grew 2 inches last month but hasn't put on weight" look to them until about junior year.

I was massively under challenged in high school (and a fair amount of college, really) and I had some homelife problems that coincided with high school. I never had trouble with bullying or anything, it was just a crappy time for other reasons.

Grade 10 is coming to a close, all of my exams are going to be piss poor easy. things are all right, don't deal with people being dicks because either I'm the dick or the friend of the dick.

Downsides like smoking, and rarity of booze are a pain.

Teachers ain't a problem Science, English, Math, Gym, Auto teachers all loved me even had a smoke with the ladder of that list while my Civics and drama teachers where fucking terrified to argue with me (they were very counter-opinionated fucks(to me anyway)).

And after two more years on easy street here are over the RCEME Canadian Armed Forces are waiting for another near high school drop out that had the potential for scholarships... that just put my school history in perspective... now I'm all sad.

I would choose highschool ANY DAY over Junior High (middle school). JH was a horror.

I'm not sure if it's the same here in the UK as it is everywhere else, but my main gripes are...

- The work tends to be either stupidly easy, or frustratingly hard with no middle ground.

- We are constantly told that we must start adopting the same level of responsibility as adults, but are never given the same level of freedom as adults. It's a two-way street people! Why should we do all the work for none of the reward?

- Most schools tend to respond to trouble makers by giving them the attention and status as a rebel that they're after at the expense of people who actually want and need help.

- A lot of the male contingent thinks that they are mature just because their pubic hair has now manifested, and a lot of the female continent think that they must reward this behavior if they are ever to be accepted by all the budding alpha males.

- Anyone who doesn't find the appeal in the accepted route to success, ie. University, secure job, family, and a life of comfort yet complete insignificance in some copy pasted suburb just like everyone else is looked down on almost for having the temerity to care more about being happy than having money.

That's not to say I think Secondary Education sucks outright. All in all I've been at a pretty good school, in my time here I've grown a lot as a person, made all my best friends and honed what raw talents I had into real skills. But the system, across all three tiers, but the second in particular, needs a lot of work.

Hells yes. Worst years of my life! Being a white sarcastic nerdy girl in a lower class black and mexican school was, well, horrible doesn't even begin to answer it.

High School was a different story. I was for all intense purposes invisible other than to my friends and that suited me just fine. Freshman year sucked but the rest was great.

College sucked but thats because my parents wouldn't pay for me to move into dorms. Of course now I have no student loan debt, I don't know if the memories would have been worth it.

Hey there, fellow escapists. I have recently been browsing the forums, and discovered a strange pattern. I realized that most people on this site pretty much hated high school, and go on and on about how it blows in general. My question is, why? I just finished my freshman year, and it was hella fun. Am I the only one on this site who enjoys high school, the time of finally being considered intelligent by adults, chilling with friends, and forming your own, independent opinions about issues?

I didn't enjoy my 'highschool' experience much. It was an inner-city comprehensive where a significant minority of the students were violent criminals and/or drug dealers. A guy got stabbed on the stairwell and another had his face smashed in with a bar weight in the week I joined and then a guy got his head forced into a pillar drill and another got stabbed in the week I left.

All in all I spent most my time bulking up, keeping quiet and making damn sure I never fell below a B in any subject so I'd never be relegated to the lower classes with the animals.

I wouldn't say I hated high school but it's certainly not a time that I look back on fondly. The schoolwork itself wasn't challenging and there were only 3 people I knew who weren't insufferable; yeah, it's probably my fault for not having an infectious and extroverted personality but I just couldn't stand the vapid and shallow ways of my peers. Oh and I certainly wasn't considered intelligent by adults and my opinions back then were absolutely retarded regardless of how independent they were.

As for college, THAT'S when I had a blast. New city, new circle of friends, new purpose and new challenges, all at a time when I was first considered to be an adult (the right to vote and drink and all).

I'm currently in High School and I don't hate it, I just can't wait for it to be over. Half the people in it are idiots and I am tired of everyone talking about how great the football team is and nothing else despite the fact that almost everything the school has won came from Drama and JROTC. When I'm done here I'm going to The Citadel(military college) and then the Air Force, so the sooner I'm done here the better.

My question is, why?

Because a huge proportion of people on this website are social outcasts, or people who never felt that they fit in. Nerds, in other words. Enjoyment levels in high school is directly linked to conformity. The more you fit in, the more fun you have. There is never anything wrong with conformity.

Anyway, I'm with you, I loved high school. I did have some problems, but that was more to do with the teachers than my peers.

Not only was being quiet, shy, small and bookish like tattooing "Bully Me" on my forehead, but I was unable to enjoy anything that challanged me because my school had one simple attitude. "Excel, or get out". The school board was so concerned with good marks they wouldn't allow anyone who might have trouble from even attempting anything challanging, so becuase I wasn't an automatic A.. but could have been if given the opportunity and encouraged instead of being told I suck.. I wasn't even allowed to try certain subjects and for others ended up stuck in middle row groups with people who just didnt care.

Secondary school (for I am English) did not suck half as much as A-Levels, and it wasn't until a few weeks into A-Levels did I find myself missing secondary school far more than I thought I ever would.
