Do Americans even know who Martin Freeman is? He's big over here, but I imagine the majority of people would rather of seen a big face as the main role.

I'm pretty happy with it, I'd rather British actors play the roles, like they did in the original trilogy.

But hey, the viewers are idiots.

I'm never disappointed to find out big actors didn't get big roles. First I think it's always a good thing to let the B, C, and D list actors with potential get a chance to spread their wings. And second, if a big name actor gets too big, I have trouble enjoying the movie for what it is.

Let's take Tom Cruise for example. He is such a big celebrity with so much drama around him I can't watch any of his movies anymore and see the character he's playing, and can't take it seriously. All I can see is Tom Cruise.

On the other hand, after I saw Elijah Wood as Frodo, it took me a long, LONG time to be able to say "Oh, that's Elijah Wood" rather than "Oh, that's Frodo Baggins." To me, that's what good actors are. They ARE the characters they play, not their public persona with a costume on.

Oh yes! I'm glad they got him for that role. I loved him as Watson and I bet I will love him as Bilbo just as much!

Ha, I remember hearing rumors about Freeman as Bilbo way back in like '05 and thinking, "He'd be the perfect fit; he and Arthur Dent are practically the same character already!" But I figured it wouldn't happen. Good to hear I was wrong... and also right.

Kind of looking forward to this movie. Not sure how they are going to be able to top the LOTR movies (because the hobbit book definitely didnt have as much action as the trilogy did)

Meh.
Would've preferred the original actor from the main films (considering he's in a scene from the Hobbit in flashback style)... and this guy looks way too young, considering he's supposed to have looked the same at the date of his unexpected party as when he went on his first adventure. He's going to need a lot of makeup and curly white hair, that's all I can say.

I want to know who Smaug will be, there are so many fantastic voices out there that would be great. For some reason Liam Neeson comes to min, but his voice isn't exactly that of a giant goddamned dragon.
Why not? He's awesome as Aslan in the Chronicles of Narnia movies. Why not a dragon?

Andy Serkis must return as Gollum. He was definitely the best part of the trilogy!
He will. And yes, Ian McKellan will be back as Gandalf.

Well, since they're splitting it into two movies, nerds like me won't be grumbling about them leaving out smaller scenes and awesome little details.
I reckon we can rest assured that any scenes they do leave out will be for a good reason.

Also, Martin Freeman is an awesaome actor. I'm certain he'll do great as Bilbo.

As for Smaug? I agree with a post higher up, Leonard Nimoy or bust!!

Either him or Stephen Fry. I reckon he could actually do a pretty damn good job.
