Good thing you're enjoying the Slice of Life shows. Haruhi is so awesome I went and bought all the books that are currently translated. Azumanga Daioh, K-On, and Ika Musume if you want to see more.

FLCL if you want a wacky and deranged show that's ultimately a coming of age story in the end (maybe). Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann if you want something that's a little less wacky, more hot blooded, and has giant robots but is still something of a coming of age/beat-everything-with-your-determination story in the end.

Gundam is good. While you're at it, check 08th MS Team as well. Separate universe from Wing and my favorite Gundam series.

I actually am watching anime and enjoying it...

My group of friends who are massive fans of anime/mange lent me some manga to read and I suprisingly enjoy it, I then started watching some of the anime and other stuff. I've been watching Neon Genesis Evangelion, Lucky Star and The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya and I'm really having a blast.

They have some suggested some themselves to watch like Angel Beats, Code Geass and Death Note and I personally have a real urge to watch Gundam Wing.

So i'm wondering what recommendations any of you could give? I don't really have preferences really at the moment so i'l try most things.
Oh, I thought there's a girl that likes me.

Fullmetal Alchemist :)Brotherhood, for the best Anime), One Piece, Azumanga Daioh, Death Note, Soul Eater, and Fairy Tail are all great Mangas that have good Anime adaptations as well.

Hellsing, Mahou Sensei Negima, and Black Lagoon are great Mangas that have Anime adaptations i can't recommend because they don't cover enough of the Manga.

Cowboy Beebop, Ouran High School Host Club, Sayonara Zetsubo Sensei, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagan, and Trinity Blood are awesome Animes that either don't have a Mange they're based on or (in the case of Ouran) aren't as enjoyable as the Anime.

You made a good start with NGE and Haruhi imo. It's tradition for me to recommend Cowboy Bebop, Fullmetal Alchemist, Full Metal Panic, GANTZ, Ghost In The Shell (can really start it anywhere, as long as you try to keep Stand Alone Complex and SAC: 2nd Gig in order), Samurai Champloo, Last Exile, Basilisk, High School Of The Dead and the first 64 episodes of Bleach.

If you like the drama aspects of NGE and Haruhi, I alos reccomend Serial Experiments: LAIN, Jin/Roh, Samurai X: Trust and Betrayal as well as Reflections (and to a lesser extent the looong series based off those movies, Ruroni Kenshin), Ergo Proxy, Elfen Lied, Trinity Blood and Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust and the Hellsing Ultimate, Gungrave, Death Note, and Wolf's Rain.

For giggles, FLCL, Full Metal Panic: Fumoffu, Trigun, .Hack//SIGN, and Excel Saga.
My god, I just ended the Endless Eight episodes... that was frustrating as hell. I skipped a few of them to try and notice the differences but... that was just annoying.

I'm always surprised Lucky Star and Haruhi get people into anime. They're so heavily entrenched in anime terminology and tropes that it would seem like a terrible gateway, like watching Pani Poni Dash or Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei first.

Anyway.

Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex and the first Ghost in the Shell movie from 1995. They are the best.

Dennou Coil is a work of genius. One of the most deviously well-written anime out there. There's even proper science-fiction in it, as *mad* as that sounds.

.hack//SIGN is also worth it. Don't be put off by the OP, it's an excellent show.

Haibane Renmei. I can't really describe this show and do it justice.

If you like Lucky Star you should definitely give Azumanga Daioh, K-ON! and maybe Hidamari Sketch a try. I love all three, but Hidamari is different in some obscure way.

Don't waste your time with Elfen Lied or Gantz. I come across as hating a lot of anime on these forums (apparently), but it's true that I genuinely hate these two. They are awful.

I'm just glad it's not another DA2/Your Avatar has X/THE PEDO-FILES/Recommend me a JRPG on the PC! (okay, these aren't too common but they are kind of annoying) thread.

I thought Blassreiter was pretty good.

Also: If you haven't seen Akira, stop everything until you do. Talking about anime is nothing but blasphemy until you've seen this one.

It probably goes without saying, though.

If you're at all interested in serious anime, watch Monster.

Fooly Cooly is a requirement. (There are only six episodes; no excuses.)

Finally, watch Paranoia Agent. Again, it's fairly brief and there's no reason for you to pass it up.

Ain't nothing wrong with that. Anime CAN be good - it's just a form of media, that's all. Like any form of media, it can be good or bad. And, like all forms of media, MOST of Anime is terrible, but there are more than a few gems in the mix.

I love Cowboy Bebop. It's not as cerebral as Evangelion gets towards the end but it has nearly all the pro's of Anime and non of the major con's.

The English voice acting is good, the music is fantastic, the storylines are pretty damned cool (I believe in the first episode I saw a woman had been frozen in cryo because of some condition they couldn't yet cure, and when they thawed her, she ended up being pursued by collection agency gunships). Check it out.

While those are all good, they aren't what I'd typically recommend to someone who is just getting into anime. NGE is incredibly polarizing, Haruhi herself can be offputting, and Lucky Star is... well... it makes a whole lot more sense if you've watched a bunch of other anime. For example...

This scene is way funnier if you know who the character on the banner is, and the context of the series she's from (for the record, she's an 'option' from a harem anime called Shuffle!, and this scene was funny, at least for me, because Konata's reaction is nothing like the male lead's reaction).

As for my recommendations, here are a few that I didn't see mentioned in my cursory glance over the topic (also, trying not to give away too much about them...):

- Full Metal Panic!: not to be confused with Fullmetal Alchemist (they absolutely have nothing to do with each other), I'd say this is a better gateway show than Code Geass, based on the simple fact that Code Geass can get really, really annoying and convoluted at times. Same genre as Code Geass, but not so caught up in itself.

- Crest/Banner of the Stars: a bit older, but great nonetheless. It's a space opera that frames the intensely personal relationship of two young people with the galaxy-spanning conflict between empires (and no, it doesn't pull out the tired Romeo and Juliet gambit, thank god). For my money, this should be the standard for any show trying to do something similar.

- RahXephon: if you liked Evangelion, try this one out. Some people call it "Evangelion Light", some people call it "Evangelion Done Right." It has a lot of similarities, but it is its own distinct show, and a very good one at that. While it has less giant robot action, it has more stable characters, and an ending that actually makes some semblance of sense.

- Black Lagoon: if you like blockbuster action movies, watch this, because it's better than 95% of them. Even if you don't like action movies, remember, a show that features a boat ramping off the wreckage of another boat to shoot down a helicopter with a torpedo simply cannot be criticized.

If you liked manga I'd recommend 666 Satan (O-Parts Hunter in the states). It's a good little action manga.
I also read one called Bitter Virgin (Don't look at me like that!). It's a love story, but the events are actually kinda mature. I actually started to read it, without any intention to actually get into it, because I was bored and I was curious who would read that kind of thing. A hour or so later, I had read the entire story.

Has anyone mentioned Trigun, yet? I think that is one of the mandatory series for all anime people.
