Dragon ball z.

Its not amazing as a narrtive like the others, but you'll have a blast watching it.
While I'll admit that the overall story was just "Save the World" over and over, I actually thought a lot of the characters were pretty well written. And honestly, so many other anime characters are based off the ones from Dragonball Z. How many times have you seen a character that totally made you think of Vegeta?

What! Don't look at me like that D:
I liked it too, don't worry.

OT: Puella Magi Madoka Magica. Go. Watch it. Now. Think of it as the Neon Genesis Evangelion of Magical Girl shows.

Of course, nearly EVERY shonen series since has had insperation form it.

Naruto, luffy from one peice, all are hot headed but lovable fools with amazing hidden powers, just like goku!

And sasuke's realtionship with naruto is not u nlike Vegeta's with gokus.

Also GANTZ.

FOR REALS.
WRONG! You read Gantz. The series is only like the first two encounters and then some made up stuff. It doesn't offer the same character development or artistic (gory) style that the manga does.

I'd tell you to watch Planetes, Serial Code Lein and Macross Frontier. The story in Macross gets really really dumb near the end, but the animation is really good and it's got this whole "space mecha musical" thing going on.

Firstly, shed load of threads like this; when the same animes keep popping up, those are the ones you want to give a go.
Secondly, remember anime is not a genre but a medium; if you don't like one, try the others. There are so many great shows out there that use animation to bring some truely crazy ideas to life, but some of them are better than others.
Thirdly, because they haven't been mentioned yet: Hajime no ippo (about boxing, an important aspect of watching anime is to not ignore a show cause you don't know what the title means, you'll miss some of the best shows out there), HunterXHunter, and Avatar: the last airbender ( Iknow it is techically not an amine, but it is one of the most detailed, well drawn and scripts shows I have ever watched)...

Enjoy...

Cowboy Bebop is a great one. I would also suggest Full Metal Panic and Golden Boy (Golden Boy is hilarious but it is pretty sexual. It's only six episodes long though so its worth a watch).

Well, let's see. Most of my suggestions are going to go towards the weird and haunted shores at world's end weird and super crazy, plus bloody and awesome.

Higurashi no Naku Koro ni: It's about a town named Hinamizawa and the inhabitants who live there. Definitely a good watch, and don't worry about what happens in the beginning; keep watching. There are two seasons and an OVA. Western name: When They Cry (though the technical translation is 'When the Cicadas Cry'.

School Days: This anime is completely malicious in how tame it is in the beginning. Worth the watch just to see how badly it goes at the end. There's the series and two OVAs.

Umineko no Naku Koro ni: Made by the same people as Higurashi, but featuring an island and the same recurring time loop (a la Higurashi). Not quite as good, but I liked it and it's worth a watch. Western name: When the Seagulls Cry. Just one series so far.

Ga Rei: I'm beginning to think I have a thing for crazy women; oh, wait, I totally do. This one is about two girls who are part of different family lines that can summon monsters from tattoos on their back to fight evil spirits. The anime is a prequel to the manga, and both are worth going for.

Akira: A must-see for any burgeoning anime fan. This is the prototypical anime that really got things going in the US, I think. It's about mental powers, friendship and gang-riddled Tokyo (I think it was Tokyo). The motorcycle is fucking sweet, too. This is a movie, I'm not sure i there's a manga or not.

Kaze no Tani no Nausicaa: Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind. One of my all-time favorite movies, by director Hayao Miyazaki. I'll go ahead and say that any movie he's done is worth watching. Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle, Ponyo, Mononoke Hime, he even did one of my other favorite movies: Lupin III and the Castle of Cagliostro. (Lupin is a series of movies you should definitely check out when you have time).

Instead of continuing to list all of the anime I'd recommend, I'll just drop this here: http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=mylist&do.filter=1&uid=245534

This is my aniDB list. Ignore the DBZ on there, I watched it before I knew any better. Anything else, give it a watch, they're all good. Some are NSFW, be warned.

Evangelion - Gunbuster & Diebuster, TTGL, RahXephlon
Lucky Star/Haruhi - Azumanga Daioh, Cromatie High School, Ore no Imouto, Welcome to the NHK

General: Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, Paranoia Agent, Serial Experiments Lain, Ghost in the Shell, Miyazaki movies, Legend of the Galactic Heroes, FLCL

Death Note and Code Geass are okay, but I don't find them as interesting as the shows I listed.

I recommend Berserk, Claymore, Code Geass, Gantz, Black Lagoon, Clannad, and Toradora!. Those are all pretty good, and if you like NGE, you'll probably like Berserk, Claymore, Code Geass, and Gantz, considering that they're all kind of dark like NGE gets during the end.

I prefer manga. Less chance for seizure inducing incidents.

Try Paranoia Agent. It's one of my favorites.

Fullmetal Alchemist is great. The first series, I mean. I can't speak for Brotherhood, as I haven't seen those.

I say Full Metal Panic, though I would reccommend the sub. Though the dub isn't terrible in my opinion anyway.
