Who invented the World Wide Web? This is a question i hear alot on my school and among my friends, well most of them answer: The Americans of course!
And I find this a little bit disturbing, the internet was (as i thougth to be public knowledge) made by CERN. a scientific organization stationed in Geneva, Switzerland
so my question is really simple, why is it that everytime somthing grand, like or beloved internet is born, most people presume its made in the US?

Edit: sorry for the mistake in the location of CERN, it has been fixed now.

Well, in this case it's because Al Gore said he did. Almost no one believes him but they don't care enough to find an alternative inventor.

Also, Internet =/= World Wide Web. The Web is really the important bit, the Net is just the connections.

Er no and yes. The internet was brought about from different countries contributions. If anyone I'd probably say Tim Berners-Lee made the internet.

maybe he works for them? for I know for a fact that they won a Nobelsprize for the invention, and CERN is not working for Switzerland, they are just placed there, they are an international company

Americans claim creation of everything. It's best just to ignore them since they are mostly idiots anyway.

God made it. it was handed down through his prophets in the late 60's to bring light to all the world. This was of course before the coming of Al Gore and the descent into darkness.

It's probably because it was made in the U.S. CERN publicized WWW. "The Web" was made by an Englishman.

However, the internet was originally a U.S. military invention that was primarily used to network radar stations together.

And no, Al Gore didn't say he invented the internet. He stated he took initiative in creating it though.

Of course ^^, you don't claim to invent things you didn't invent.

I don't think it's just Americans who claim this. In my experience people are generally told that someone form their country 'invented' something, usually when they just had a part in the evolution of an exisiting idea. Very few things are 'invented' as we know them now. Most technology is a product of ongoing improvement form people around the world

For example: who invented the electric lightbulb?

who invented the car?

The history of the Internet began with the ARPANET and connected mainframe computers on dedicated connections. The ARPANET (Advanced Research Projects Agency Network) developed by ARPA of the United States Department of Defense, was the world's first operational packet switching network, and the predecessor of the global Internet.

So yes, America DID start the Internet, sorry to break it to you.

it's because a lot of people, yourself included, think the internet and the World Wide Web are the same thing.

I'm never sure why Americans either lay claims to great ideas or inventions (or wether ppl just asume they did) but it gets a bit anoying to me, the English did that to the scotts alot too and I'd hoped if ppl are genuinly curios about stuff like that they should fine out themselves rather than just asume americans did it.
