The Iron Patriot Joins Iron Man 3

The first shots of Iron Man's latest armored rival are out and about.

If you think the Iron Patriot armor looks like a mash-up of Iron Man and Captain America, you're not wrong. The suit was "designed" by Norman Osborn, AKA the Green Goblin, who, after being installed as the head of the government-sanctioned post-"Civil War" Avengers by the forgiving magic of comic books, decided that the best way to earn the trust and love of the public was to slap it in the face with a big dose of heavy-handed symbolism. So he grabbed an old Iron Man suit out of Tony Stark's closet, painted it up in the Cap's colors and put it on in the name of truth, justice and all that other good stuff.

Alas, the Normster won't be wearing this thing in Iron Man 3, but it's going to show up in the movie nonetheless. The man behind the mask will actually be Eric Savin, as played by James Badge Dale, who in the comics becomes a cyborg (presumably a bad one) called Coldblood after stepping on a land mine.

So why is he strapping on the Iron Patriot armor in Iron Man 3, and not ol' Greenie? Chalk that up to the Spider-Man schism between Marvel and Sony. Sony still owns the film rights to Spider-Man, and by extension Norman Osborn, and while death is never much of a stumbling block for Marvel Comics characters, licensing rights most definitely are. So Norm is out, Coldblood is in - sort of - and we can all look forward to yet another armored argy-bargy on the big screen.

This is a interesting development and I did wonder who is going to wear it since it can't be Norman until I read below. Also I never heard of the villain Coldblood until now, I wonder if the Mandarin will finally make a proper apperance in it?

Actually, there's some debate as to whether this is actually Iron Patriot or not. Some people believe that it is in fact meant to be Detroit Steel, a Stars and Stripes themed Iron Man suit made by Hammer Industries (Who have already appeared in Iron Man 2). Personally I think Detroit Steel makes much more sense as not only does it continue from the last film but Norman Osborne and the entire Civil War story arc are so integral to the point of Iron Patriot that using the name without Norm seems a bit... hollow.

Allow me to ask the question I've asked since the first Iron Man came out: Where the hell is the Mandarin?

This does seem to make a bit more sense and hopefully this will be the case... instead of it being 'Iron Patriot'.

Can't Iron Man fight anyone aside from Iron Man rip offs? As I recall the past 2 movies had him fighting other guys in robot suits.

Isn't that like asking why can't Spiderman fight people that don't have animal/mutant themes?

Except Spider Man fought the green goblin in 1, doc oc in 2, and venom and sandman in 3. Completely different than fighting a bald guy in a robot suit, then a Russian guy in a robot suit

Nice try though.

Well to be fair, Venom's theme is a snake. I could argue that most of his villains have a split personality to a degree, or some type of outside force driving them (Norman had the gas causing a split personality, Doc Oc had the robot arms whispering for him to do evil, Venom had the symbiote that exaggerated his anger). Sandman again would be the exception.

Still, I read somewhere Mandarin has been shown to be the villain and it's likely this will be a 2 on 2 battle, Iron Man and War Machine Vs. Iron Patriot and Mandarin.

Not to sound repetitive, but wasn't Mandarin definitely gonna be in Iron Man 3? I thought they had even cast Ben Kingsley to play the man in question.

It seemed like a natural progression, what with Thor establishing magics and mysticism in the Marvel Movie-Verse.

I suppose it could be both.
You are correct, sir/madam; Sir Ben Kinsley is cast as a villian, likely Mandarin: http://www.neonpunch.com/is-andy-lau-going-to-be-cast-as-the-mandarin-in-iron-man-3/
In any case, there will be Chinese heroes about, which should make Movie Bob happy.

Or not, since the Mandarin is being played by the English/Indian Ben Kingsley. No offense to his obvious acting skill but he's about as Chinese as a Mongolian. And yes, that is a huge difference.

Oh great. Just what Iron Man 3 needed. ANOTHER ally and/or rival and/or enemy who's just another Iron Man.

Seriously.
Iron Man: Tony Stark battles his VP who dons an Iron Man suit on steroids.
Iron Man 2: Tony Stark teams up with his Air Force buddy who wears an Iron Man suit with a small arsenal to take on a Russian asshole who wears an Iron Man suit with energy whips and an army of Iron Man robots.

See, it's crap like that which has made me disinterested in the superhero genre and is why I'm going to wait until I'm bored and it's on Netflix before I see The Avengers.

Well, in the comics, all of Iron Man's enemies are nothing but guys wearing their own Iron Man suits.

Most Superheroes have a "theme" to their enemies.

Superman's enemies are either made of krypotonite, use it, or are from Krypton.

Batman's are all insane.

And X-men's are all mutants or mutant hunters.

DEATH I LAUGH AT THEE, oh crap LICENSING!!! NOT THE EVIL LICENSING AGREEMENT!!!

RUN AWAY ALL MUTANTS AND SPIDERMAN VILLAINS/HEROES!!!

/sarcastic mockery

Anyway, I think it will be nice to see a new story arise out of this mess. They can use this as creative freedom.

Also, I never liked the Civil War storyline. I mean sure the villains helped out some but forgiving them for Murder and other horrendous crimes, Really?

Oh, That would be an awesome movie. Hmm, perhaps some of us should write too Marvel suggesting that idea.
