Oh great. Just what Iron Man 3 needed. ANOTHER ally and/or rival and/or enemy who's just another Iron Man.

Seriously.
Iron Man: Tony Stark battles his VP who dons an Iron Man suit on steroids.
Iron Man 2: Tony Stark teams up with his Air Force buddy who wears an Iron Man suit with a small arsenal to take on a Russian asshole who wears an Iron Man suit with energy whips and an army of Iron Man robots.

See, it's crap like that which has made me disinterested in the superhero genre and is why I'm going to wait until I'm bored and it's on Netflix before I see The Avengers.
Well, in the comics, all of Iron Man's enemies are nothing but guys wearing their own Iron Man suits.

Most Superheroes have a "theme" to their enemies.

Superman's enemies are either made of krypotonite, use it, or are from Krypton.

Batman's are all insane.

And X-men's are all mutants or mutant hunters.
It makes sense too, what with Iron Man being a Cold War superhero, so fighting various other armored villains of other nationalities is symbolic of the Arms Race and what not.

Crap on a cracker I hate Sony, but in the same breath, it seems likely that the unmitigated mess, trash and horror of the "Civil War" story won't be realized on the big screen is something of a relief.

Tony Stark really does have way too many of those suits kicking around. He has a different one for every occasion. Not too much of a stretch to think that one could just go missing.

Ugh... this is where comic movies turn bad. If they need to change little things about the characters and universe, it's fine. But when they include a character and not have him in any way faithful to the comic, it's just a bad idea. There are so many good Iron Man villains, and they are going to mess with one they can't even faithfully reproduce because of copyright restrictions.

Well, we'll see how this turns out, but it kinda lowers my expectations pretty drastically... which isn't a bad thing really.

It's really just a matter of opinion, but using this as an excuse to skip Avengers is in poor taste. One thing Avengers didn't do is the same old thing. But, that is my opinion, so I understand if you do not endorse it.

Me thinks that death is a wee bit more permanent in the Marvel Movieverse than in the comics.....

As long as he isn't the main villain and his role in the film is more Detroit Steel than Iron Patriot, this could be...not awful. I really don't think this needs to happen though but I'm willing to hold out for now because they might know what they are doing, just saying my general response is a negative one though.

I was kinda hoping Iron Man wouldn't fall back through the portal at the end of Avengers, I think stuck on the other side of the universe could have been a very awesome way to start the third film.

Damn you licensing issues.

Just give all Marvel continuity back to Marvel!!!!

Honestly though; I'm really really really surprised Disney still hasn't tossed it's weight around to buy back all the rights to the Spider-Man and X-Men franchises.

I know it'd be expensive, but surely the last 4 Marvel movies have proved it could easily pay for itself a few films in the future.

You think they'd at least want Spider-Man back given that he's their flagship character (last I checked; I'm pretty sure he still is.)
It'd be like Nintendo running a movie studio and making films based on their properties but some other studio has the rights to Mario.

Either way, Iron Patriot's presence looks interesting. Though I'm much more interested in the villain Ben Kingsley will play.
Strong possibility that it's Mandarin.

Iron Man 3 is really getting cluttered.

They have the Mandarin.
They've announced Firepower.
Now someone is going to bring the Iron Patriot in as a villain instead of just a suit that Norman happened to wear.

This is beginning to bode ill for the third movie.

unless they missed something they didn't announce who will be the main villain and thus it's possible that some character will only have a small part to establish them for future marvel films.

oh and i really hope this is detroit steel, having the iron patriot makes absolutely no sense unless you are doing some civil war like first.

This probably makes me a terrible Marvel fan, but I'm actually really glad they can't use Spidey. [small]Aside from the fact I personally can't stand him in any medium,[/small] not being able to focus on their "flagship" character means that we get to see more of the less well-known (to non-comic book fans) heroes. How many non-fans had even heard of Iron Man before the movies?

Them not having X-Men makes me sad though.

Conversely, I'm glad they can't throw Wolverine into every f*cking movie but am sad at the lack of Spidey.

OT: I'm holding out hope the Iron Patriot thing has something to do with Cap and Iron Man rather than "Ayron Mun? Haf Amurica Ayron Mun!", because I don't see any reason Stark would even BUILD that.

Would have been a pretty downer ending, but I agree, it would have nonetheless been very interesting. Perhaps having to rescue Stark from either the aliens / ...
Thanos
... by utilising the cube's power. Or bringing Loki back as a reluctant ally.

I really want to see Iron Man take on someone other than the military industrial complex. Hes always been the ultimate anti-communist, so why not borrow the Ultimate Galactus tale with the Avengers infiltrating an abandoned Soviet base stuffed with monstrous Captain America knock offs or something? I know whiplash was Russian but he could have just been a mercenary from any old country, I want to see Tony being apologetically American for a while. Hell im not even American, but the broad golbalized 'there are no real bad guys but terrorists and business men' wall is just so BLAND I'd love to see it coloured with some red white and blue.....

Can't Iron Man fight anyone aside from Iron Man rip offs? As I recall the past 2 movies had him fighting other guys in robot suits.
Why dont you take a look at his villan library [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Iron_Man_enemies] and state who or what you would rather see instead?

Seeing as this is going to be set post-Avengers (presumably) maybe Iron Patriot has actually been inspired by Captain America?
