I (and countless other Avatar fans) felt this was a great opportunity to show what a great series this was to the rest of the world.
I NEVER thought that and i'm a HUGE avatar fan...

But seriously, did you REALLY expect more from M.Night? What part of M.Night do you not understand? He hasn't made a good movie probably since SIGNS and even that is arguable depending on who you talk to.

Frankly, even IF this movie was ANY good, it could NEVER EVER IN A MILLION YEARS top the finale of the show. It just doesn't get better than the 4 part series finale.
Note that I said "other fans" and not "every fan on the face of the earth."

And yes, I knew full well of Shamwow's track record. I knew the movie could have ranged from halfway-decent-ish to bad-with-a-few-redeeming-values, but I didn't expect him to eviscerate the material and display its entrails for all to see.
You must have passed on Lady in the Water then...

I loved the original Avatar: the last airbender. The story and action were mostly balanced even if a little corny at times, but with M.NightShyamallan as the director I fear it will only be corny, little story, and too many wonderful special effect being used the wrong way.

I believe someone has already said it, but I do beleive this movie will be the next Jonah Hex/ DBZ movie and probably make enough money for a sequal to torture us with another.

How could you make a competent movie about a 12 year old saving the world in live action?
This is where I point you toward Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. Good movie.
That's debatable.
I believe the term you used was "competent".
And I believe the term you used was "good." That's what I was disagreeing with you on.
You made your point, but it's still difficult to make a competent movie about 12 year olds saving the world.
Also, Harry Potter didn't save the world in chamber of secrets, he saved a school.

True, but that was only the microcosm the story was laboring in. This particular archetype demands the boy-hero win through in the end.

Also, if you come to think about it, how many movies about 12 year olds embarking on adventures are there anyway? Neverending Story comes to mind but was the kid that young?

Also, don't trust rotten tomatoes fully. People can just go there and give a movie a bad review if they want. I'm not saying this is the case here, but 7% seems low, even the Twilight movies didn't score that low.. Doesn't that set off bells and whistles to anyone else?
BTW, Twilight got a 50%... So let's think about it.
It sets off bells and whistles, but not the ones I think you're thinking should be set off.

RottenTomatoes is just an aggregate of hundreds of other reviews. The Twilight movies scoring higher than The Last Airbender tells me that lots of gushy fangirls wrote reviews and submitted them. Doesn't make the movies any less godawful. For The Last Airbender, with a fanbase of kids who don't write reviews and intelligent adults who loved the show and who do write reviews, to be sitting at a 6% currently (with 81 reviews) makes perfect sense to me.

So, yeah. I believe that the movie sucks, and I'm not going to waste my money funding Shamalayan's dreams of a sequel.

Still, don't you think some stupid people could just go on there and give it the lowest percentage possible? Maybe some people did it because they saw it and disliked it, but maybe some people just said "Stupid little kid movie" and gave it a low score.
I'm a skeptic and like I said, I'll save my own opinion until the movie comes out.

Who knows, maybe all the Twilight fangirls gave is a 1% because "It is stealing Edward and Jacob's spotlight".
:p

Well, it's not a percentage thing, it's just thumbs up or thumbs down. And out of 81 people, all of them professional reviewers who got early screenings, only like 4 had given it a thumbs up.

Just got back from seeing it.

Theres no King Bumi in it.
Everyone's name is mispronounced
the acting is flat
the story is just barely close to the first book
There was maybe 1 or 2 good parts in the entire thing.
My life is ruined :(
Adding to this:
Ozai was actually in it, and Zhou's big plan was his idea, and Iroh just stands there going "this is a bad idea..."
The characterization was completely off
The word "Avatar" is also misprounounced
Roku is replaced by his pet dragon
The best acting was done by that Fire Nation soldier who chased down the kid who was earthbending pebbles at him "...they hurt"

Sorry to quote such a large amount but you do know RT doesnt just post any review submitted to them don't you? there are far too many twats on the internet (as anyone who follows these forums should know) who'll just go and see how low they can get a movie rating for what roughly equates to giggles. You have to be something approaching professional.

To be honest, I was kind of hoping this movie would fail miserably. I don't know why.
You and me both. Maybe we just like seeing things fail miserably? Could it be disaster voyeurism? [http://xkcd.com/611/]

From what I've heard, the Kyoshi warriors were edited out of the movie too. See, this is one of the problems with the series, even the less signifigant episodes added some element of evolution to the characters, with the Kyoshi warriors being a pretty major part of Sokka's development and a small piece of Aang's development in a pretty forgettable episode (Aang goes on trial for Avatar Kyoshi murdering some guy because he wanted to conquer Kyoshi's village). Character development was something that the cartoon did masterfully but it seems like Shyamalan deliberately went out of his way to ignore it.

However, hearing Bumi didn't make it in really hurt too, because he was a fun, interesting character and he was vital to the plot. He was a vital part of Aang's old life, instrumental in moving Aang toward finding Toph and, by association, learning earthbending, and he was just a really funny, well-written, well-voiced character.

Well people, better get ready for Shyamalan treading on our nostalgic memories more, because the movie ended on a cliffhanger, which might as well have just said "Shaymalan is going to sodomize your nostalgia again, get ready."
