It's the geek way off life to let people take total advantage of you? Sorry, but I don't understand how it's great for fans to throw away their money on 5 versions of the same thing, you're being milked for cash. Just because you really like something, that shouldn't suddenly make it more acceptable for people to try and take advantage of you for it.
And I'm not just a penny pincher when it comes to these things either, I bought the hardcover 50th anniversary edition of LOTR for 90$ because I thought it was really cool, but the 100th anniversary edition is still a ways off and it's doubtful there'll be a more definitive edition until then. I wouldn't have bought the 40th edition AND the 45th edition AND the 50th edition. It is possible to splurge every now and then without being totally irrational about it.
What about people who buy sequels with only slight variations (which is most of all sequels)? Are they idiots being taken advantage of? Like people who buy
Super Smash Brothers and
Mario Kart, and nearly everything
Mario related.
There's people who say
Zelda is just the same game over and over, and anybody who buys it is just a cash cow.
It's all subjective. And just because it's not worth it for you doesn't mean it can't be for someone else.
As a fan of the Zelda series I take offense to the notion that every installment is just the same thing over and over again. The people making such accusations are usually on the outside without much internal knowledge of the series.
As for Super Smash Bros? There have only been 3 SSB games in the last 15 years, and comparing the original to Brawl I think you'll notice an ever so slight expansion to the... well everything.
MarioKart is really the only series you mentioned that I'll agree is being shamelessly milked without much difference between installments, and the most recent one, Mario Kart 7, was heavily criticized for that by our own Jim Sterling. So yes, I do think if you buy every single version of Mario Kart that comes out you are being suckered, even though there's still much more that's different between those than there are between rereleases of the exact same game like I was originally discussing.

At least you can draw comfort out of how much better you are than everybody that buys games day one.
Yep, absolutely, or at least much smarter, and wealthier for it. And you know what I can do with the money I save? Spend it on other games I want. Don't get angry at me just because I don't make stupid purchasing decisions. Honestly, I would be more angry at the people trying to sell you things knowing full well they'll try to resell it to you again later, or trying to make you buy something before it's even come out.
You know, the fact that you buy games period is already a stupid purchasing decision in the eyes of many people.
And what's the relevance to that? The fact that some people think videogames are a waste of time/money is a matter of preference. The fact that it's wasteful to repurchase the same game you already own over and over is common sense.
And of course this isn't limited to just games as you've pointed out. In almost every medium we've been encouraged to buy the same content again and again every time a new format comes out. With music it may be the worst, from vinyl to casset tapes to CDs to MP3s to MP4s, at least with the last few you can burn/rip music from one to the other.
Look, if you have so much money lying around without anything better to spend it on that it's actually worth it to you to buy a slightly upgraded version of the same game for full price then fine, so long as you're making the purchasing decision with careful deliberation and not on impulse.
