A little backstory:Well, my fellow Escapists, today I have been a member of the Escapist for one year have begun my second year at this wonderful website (No, of course I didn't just forget to make this thread yesterday. What are you talking about?), and to celebrate, I've decided to make my first ever thread! Originally, I was going to make an in-depth "review" of the Escapist and tell you all why I love it so much, but then I realized that I didn't have the time or ambition to take on such an enormous project, so decided to make this thread instead. Anyway...

What this thread is actually about:We all have our favorite games, but sometimes those things that make a game oh so sweet go largely unnoticed. Whether it's the unnecessity of a health bar (á la Dead Space or Spyro) or an interesting transportation method between levels (Super Mario 64, for instance), I'm asking you all to look at a game you really liked, and find some little subtlety that you may not have noticed at first, but made the game that much more enjoyable.
As a point of reference, here's one of my favorites: Insomniac's platformers (i.e. Spyro and Ratchet & Clank) have the wonderful addition of having money (or that game's equivalent) gravitate towards you if you are near enough, so that you don't have to spend ridiculous amounts of time running in circles trying to pick up every last bit after an epic battle.
Basically, what's your favorite gameplay-related nuance in a video game?

More stuff:And now, let me just say that it has been a wonderful year here at the Escapist. Though I may not be the most well-known member, I feel like I have truly become a part of this community, more so than any other forum I have ever joined before. I'd like to thank each and every one of you who has made this year so enjoyable personally, but as I stated earlier, I do not possess the time or the ambition to do so. Either way, thank you all for giving me such a truly memorable year, and I hope to spend many more here, adding to those memories.

Hey, check out that sweet new title!

(Okay, this is actually just a shameless bump... but I wasn't getting any responses, and I spent a long time on this thread! Well, 5 minutes isn't that long. Anyways, this will be my one and only bump, I just wanted to see if I could get at least a couple of responses.)

Happy Anniversary!

I'm going to say in FFXI, in comparison to a lot of other MMO's, which gives you a list type inventory, skill, and magic format that shows the names of said things rather than meaningless little icons. This makes it (for me at least) much easier to manage my stuff and sort through magic at a moment's notice.

Doesn't that make things a little muddled though? It seems like long lists would be a bit more difficult to navigate than icons, though I do understand what you mean about the uselessness of them.

Possibly, if left to sort itself out. I tend to sort everything in an alphabetical order (as I said in a thread a short while ago actually), along with the ability to skip through the lists quite quickly I find it actually much nicer to sort through and just plain look at.

Happy anniversary, friend. =)

I'll go with Dragon Age: Origins. There was an incredible amount of detail that went into that game. I replayed it three times on different origins, and each time I got new bits of dialogue, new actions I could take, and new perspectives on quests that I once thought were just straightforward.

I loved going to places with new party members and being pleasantly surprised when I heard some hilarious banter I never heard before, or hearing new comments on the setting.

Portal. A billion subtleties in that simple little game. The themes of loss, retribution, revenge, are there if you look hard enough. And the entire plot structure where what exactly is happening is revealed to you slowly is expert. I just hope Portal 2 maintains the excellent writing of the first.
