For those of you who may not have heard of them, they are an experimental mathcore band from San Diego who have raised some eyebrows due to their controversial style of making songs that are simply 45 second blasts of noise with incomprehendible lyrics shouted over the top of them.

Some critics say they are the worst thing to ever happen to music, others say they are genuises that challenge how we see music today with innovative and original songwriting.

Whatever you think of them, they certainly are interesting.

I was curious as to know what my fellow Escapist's opinion on them was. So what do you think of them? (youtube as neccesary)

45 second blasts of incomprehensible noise?
Sounds either shite, or beautiful. Will check them out later.

Checking them out on Spotify right now, they sound like complete garbage to be totally honest.
Also, only one album of theirs seems to have 45 second songs on there, most are over the 4 minute mark.

When People Become Numbers are the only good mathcore band.

I love them. Their energy and chaotic song-structure is the kind of music I'm into anyways. They are, as I've heard them called, one of the original screamo bands, but their mathcore musicality pushes them beyond the label of a bunch of screaming ninnies.

I downloaded a buttload of their stuff off Frostwire, and I'd be happy to buy their album. My favorite song is "Anything Jesus Does, I Can Do Better".

Along the lines of Mathcore and Screamo, I also like Circle Takes The Square, War From A Harlot's Mouth, and Poison The Well.

I saw this thread title and I was like "God, wouldn't it be badass if it was about the band? It'll probably be about the Gears of War baddies... oh well." Boy, was I pleasantly suprised.

BTW- Don't expect too many positive opinions. The band isn't Rush, Disturbed, or Dream Theater, so the internet is going to hate them.

That reminds me of this Lou Reed album I bought called Metal Machine Music. I was a big fan of Lou Reed, and when I saw an album of his that I didn't even know existed, I got excited, and bought it straight away. I still wish I had looked it up earlier, because it turns out that the entire album was just four 45 minute tracks of incomprehensible, loud and disastorous guitar noises.

When I finally did get to looking it up, I found out that some people thought the album was pure genius. Personally, I think it's the worst album ever made. I think the same thing applies to this band; some people will call it a revolution in music, and others will call it for what it is, loud obnoxious noise.

But I can't be too judgmental without hearing some of their work. Could someone please provide a link?

If their playing was bad, this would be a horrible idea. But they are clearly very good musicians, so this works, almost as a study on the core elements of hard metal. There are other bands out there doing similar types of things (War From the Harlot's Mouth comes to mind - YouTube [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IajhynjCYHE]). All very interesting.

I'd compare it in spirit to what the lords of jazz were doing with classical and Big Band music in the 30s and 40s. But then people would yell at me, and I'm not in the mood for that today.

Does this count as advertising? It really sounds like the OP is either a) a member of said band or b) their manager or c) their groupie.

Sounds stupid. art doesn't necessarily need to be pleasant to hear, but this sounds like garbage.

Mathcore as a genre is basically a bunch of experiments with rythmn and song-structure and is supposed to extremely difficult to play. They don't care if people hate how it sounds, all they are pretty much going for is chaotic noise and intensity. Which I really happen to like.

Other favorite genres of mine are hardcore punk, death metal, and all subsequent subgenres and fusion of both, which mathcore is one of them. So yeah.

They are just awful.
They are obviously going for the "We don't need to be synched and make our music appealing, because we are so hardcore and edgy!" outlook, and it's apparently working if they have that much media coverage.

AMAZING band, my 3rd most listened to acording to Last.FM!

They're all brilliant musicians and I think to describe them as "45 second blasts of noise" is unfair, a lot of thought and skill goes into it.

Also I'm gay for Gabe Serbian.

Yes. Yes. Yes. I love it.

But of course, half the people on Escapist are going to be like "Gorsh, they sound a bit harsh and they scream... that's just rubbish. That guy's not Neil Peart, so he can't be a good drummer!"

If you're being sarcastic, then thats hilarious and high five.

If you aren't, Then I have to say: I don't see how beating on drums for 3 second increments while my bandmates scream incomprehensible lyrics into a mic to be artistic and thought-out.
But again, maybe I'm missing the point.
But to each their own.
