I think I remember there being some excessively long ones in the game Skies of Arcadia unfortunately I can't find a vid so I can't ascertain if I'm remembering correctly maybe someone else will come up with it.

I reckon 'The Fall' from Portal 2 is one of the longest free-fall descents in a game I've ever seen. It's so long it gives GlaDOS enough time to rant at you for like a minute and a half!
This is true. To put it to scale a fall from the top of the Grand Canyon to the bottom takes about 15 seconds. Meaning that's a pretty long fall.

Sadly the existence of ladders in Minecraft renders all other candidates redundant.
Actually, I don't think you can create a ladder quite as long as the MGS one on minecraft. Even by mining all the way to the bottom of the map, and building a ladder all the way to the top, it won't take you a whole 2 minutes, non-stop, to climb it.

So yeah, I think that one wins.
ohh but i beg to differ in Minecraft you can increase the height limit well pass the standard 128 blocks to any number. That a computer could physically can handle so saying the above is not true i could make a ladder a million blocks high.
So the existence of ladders in Minecraft renders all other candidates redundant just sating so you guys can now talk about second place.

Numbers for you:

Assuming her terminal velocity is 201 kph (55.88 m/s)(highest TV for an outstreched human), she will hit it 5.69 seconds in, at about the 159 meter mark. That means that she has about 85 seconds of free fall at terminal velocity, or about 4511.1 meters. That means that the fall is about 4870 meters, or about 15973.6 feet or about 3 miles.

Yeah, it's a long fall.

you said longest climb or descent and it doesn't have to be a ladder... I think the end of chapter 5 in Portal 2 is a contender-- you fall several thousand meters
agh, ninja'd, I thought I should've checked

Yeah, the portal 2 drop's the biggest, I think. The signs on the side of it say 4000km, if memory serves.

Holy Crap...

Why would they even make a ladder as long as that MGS3 one? It just screams "We like forcing players to suffer through infinitely long ladders".
Hideo Kojima is like a drunken abusive husband. His contempt for his fans is almost as great as the lengths his fans will go to apologise for him when he "gets this way."

I'm remembering a really long spiral staircase I remember from somewhere similar to the FFVII example. I don't think it's on the list so far....Anyone know what I'm talking about?

This easily goes to Metal Gear Solid 3.

Although probably the most famous ladder is from Call Of Juarez: Bound in Blood. I think most of you know why.

Already been said a thousand times, But I'm going with MGS3's speed run murderer.

The ladder in minecraft only goes 1 block...

I personally thought a ladder from one of the jungle levels (or was it part of the Great Maze?) in SSBB's Subspace Emissary was really long, long enough to be the level of a Spider-Man game.

Speaking of long spiral staircases, Silent Hill 4 had a hand full of them before revisiting a world. Another mention for infinite climbs is the Ice Climber's level in Super Smash Bros. Melee.

Wasn't there an endless staircase in Mario 64?

I don't think Minecraft counts, because that's a construction game.

Ladders/Stairs that go on forever? I have one :D Mario on Nintendo 64. If you haven't got enough stars yet, the stairs up too the last bowser level will actually be infinite.

Tried to find a good video, but everyone is SOOOO OBSESSED with filming the glitch instead... Oh well.

Ohh, found a good one :D Still with the glitch though, but it shows that they are Technically infinite without all the stars: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=70J8SOX5w64&feature=related

I have no idea how to make the videos show on Forums >_>
i still remember my first time as a kid with those stairs...just kept running on em for like 15 minutes straight, then turned around and realized i hadn't moved >_>
