The Dragon-class Shivan fighter from the Freespace series is all that comes to mind right now.

Fast, powerful... the only problem with it's design is that it has paper-thin hull armour, but GOOD LUCK HITTING IT!

Ok, time to show my age...

from the Rogue-like game Angband, one of the unique bosses was the Tarrasque a la Xanth and DnD fame, wasn't even the main boss but one that was much more dreaded...

quote: "It breathes poison for 15000 damage. You die." Killed by Tarrasque. from around the corner... and I was almost immune to poison... %^$# /cry

Well, that's the point of my hatred - I have to GRIIIIIIIND on low level pokemons to get to a higher level.

And that's pointless and stupid.
I have a better tactic. Get a Butterfree. Spam Confusion. He dies in two or three hits.

At the current moment its Seth on SFIV...Hes one cheap S.O.B!
Oh, man. I got so pissed off when I was having a crapton of trouble with him (on Easiest even), then my friend took the controller from me and beat him by rapidly tapping light punch as Blanka (electric shock).

Later we were laughing our asses off as I found out the trick extended to everyone. AI on Easiest is... dumb.

All that said, I can't beat him on Medium. Friggin' Yoga Teleport spamming Zangief Piledriving cheater... Still not as hard as Gill though.
I beat him on medium... after losing a big chunk of my life I will never get back. I lost count the number of continues I used, and even then I think I must've been lucky. Ever since then, all my other characters who I try to beat the game with on Medium, no matter how well I wipe the floor with everyone else on that difficulty, Seth tends to make me continue at least thrice. Particularly because stunning moves I use to follow up to Ultras that WORK on other people, for some reason he shrugs off and does the evil evil Zangief move.

I don't remember many other bosses who have caused me such agony in the past, aside from Jinpachi from Tekken 5. And even then I think Seth is on a whole different level than that guy.

All this, and they pegged in an achievement for winning Medium WITHOUT continues? Eeeeeevil!

Yes, but for both of the things your complaining about, you have to remeber that in the original game, sure the rebels had the best land forces, but in Space, they tended to get their asses wiped.
Yeah, Rebels didn't have good ships. Imperial ships had more and better weapons. Acclamator could easily beat Nebulon-B. Victory beats Assault Frigates with ease. Star Destroyer toys with Mon Calamari oh wait, that never happens because the AI doesn't build them.

Also, Empire had hangars in their ships. Rebels didn't have them, not even in Mon Calamaris. Rebels had to build their fighters before the battles. That kinda sucked for Rebels.

Anti-fighter corvettes were pretty overpowered too. Fighters and bombers didn't have a chance against them. Capital ships couldn't hit them. Then in the expansion Zann's corvettes have anti-missile system. Not nice! The Missile Corvettes were kinda frustrating too. One of their missiles could very well destroy an entire fighter unit and they fired them in shitloads. They also had very long range but luckily they were easy to destroy.

I think Petroglyph should have spent more time thinking about balance issues.

Oh and this guy... I HATE this guy. So many lunchtimes wasted trying to take him down. And the worst part? He looks like he's wearing a diaper.
Who the hell is that guy?
Street Fighter II possibly? It's been a few years, can't really remember.

Man there's been so many game bosses from the past that i've completely raged out to but none are popping into mind at the moment. Maybe my brain eliminated those memories so I wouldn't cause someone serious bodily harm. I remember hating bosses that were after long cutscenes that made you watch the same bit of film over and over again enough that it was engraved on the front of your mind for weeks afterwards.

This guy will piss you off in more ways any human beings would have to suffer.
Besides the obvious Tornado-up-your-ass teleport bullshittery he can also deal massive damage with his cheap supers. The worse part about it is that once he starts spamming his tornadoes it's merely impossible to get anywhere NEAR him to hurt him.
This guy brings is on the top tier of frustrating SNK bosses.

While being overly popular in the Street Fighter franchaise, the original Shin Akuma from Super Street Fighter II Turbo is by far THE most difficult incarnation of this monster. Even though this guy doesn't have a Hyper Special move he will pwn your arse on so many different levels that the thought of just trying to beat him is tedious. Oh, and he kills Bison in one hit before entering the arena to fight YOU. Then you just know you're screwed.
You know this bastard is severely overpowered when even the developers had to wussify him on every concivable way on the sequels (SF3 etc.)

Good luck. You'll fucking need it.
Not only does every CPU character in the game literally cheat to beat you, like walk straight through your punches and kicks and throw you or uppercut you, they can also do impossible moves since the CPU is not limited to specific joystick moves to pull off special moves and they can just spam them which would be impossible for a human player to do, no, not just that, this boss character brings the frustration to a whole new level.
Insta-teleport stomp on top of you is the name of the game, not MKII when you meet this beast.
And unless you could beat him by cheating yourself on this, you'll most likely end up under his feet, no matter how freckin' hard you tried beating him.
Oh, and in case you DO beat him, another unfair boss character is ready to greet and open a big can of woop-ass on you the moment you set your foot into the arena.

Any projectile you will throw at him will bounce back at you. Most Special Moves and Combos will not work on him or do laughiably little damage. This makes half the roster of characters in the game entirely useless. This guy can kill you in less then 5 seconds.... if he feels like it... which he does... all the time. This boss is so frustrating that the next Boss Character after him is easier to kill than teletubbies and a25 mm Bofors cannon. Seriously, The SUB-BOSS is harder than the END BOSS. Then you just know things are fucked up.

I usually think of that problem as something from games of the past: the original Ninja Gaiden and Catlevania (medusa heads aside) had bosses that were quite unfair.

With the games from this generation I find there are far fewer times where I don't know why I got killed. Not to say all the new games are perfect; far from it.

No More Heroes had a couple of bosses that were annoying. Even after you memorized their pattern, it would take a little while to whittle them down, then they give you a quick time event that kills you instantly if you fail. Then you have to start whittling them down from the beginning.

No, most of the frustration from the new games comes from playing online multiplayer games with d-bags:

The Alphawhatever robot chick in DOA4. Cheap doesn't even start to describe this one. If your character doesn't have a certain type of attack, prepare to retry for an hour. If it HAS the right type of attack, it still comes down to pure luck whether it connects or not.
I figured someone would beat me to posting this one. But even so, I feel the need to also state how awful a character Alpha was. Pure designer evilness.

It's Gill from Street Fighter III: Third Strike. Not only does he completely kick your ass in all kinds of ways (you thought Seth and Akuma were cheap? HA!), but when you eventually do manage to kill him... he... resurrects... himself... to full life...

I swear to god I snapped five controllers before I gave up trying to beat arcade mode in that game.

Sephiroth from Kingdom Hearts 1.

He had a shield around him so you can't make a hit on him. It turns off for 2 seconds at some point, but then he decides it would be more fun to use more powerful attacks. This is a real pain on the hardest difficulty.
Strike Raid was my friend. As was MP rage and Curaga.
