The most annoying level

Ignoring escort or stealth missions.
The one that drove me insane most rescently was Dark Souls Sens Fortress. Making your way up that fucking tower only to get knocked off a ledge by a blade or crushed by a boulder only to get really close to the top and have that one fucking sniper knock you off the ledge. Then when you finally make it past all that you get the extra fun of suddenly getting engulfed in fire from those fucking giants.
I made my way through that section so many times by the end I could do it in my sleep. And I hate it for that.

The eye poke machine in Dead Space 2 on Survialist or higher. Sooooo unsettling.

While they weren't that hard, I found all of the Dahaka chase scenes in Prince of Persia: Warrior Within to be ridiculously annoying.

Pretty sure the official "most annoying level in gaming history" was the frickin' hover-bike level in Battle Toads. I can only imagine that the number of people who never beat that game specifically because they couldn't pass that level is up in the millions.

Bioshock the Big Daddy part, because the Little Sister is fragile as hell.
Dead Space any part where the regenerative ass appears, it eats away your ammo real fast.

Eugh that part of the game is just obnoxious, even on the easiest difficulty. It isn't even the Armature that's the problem, it's all the other Geth moving quickly about and your squadmates utter inability to take cover.

Meh, I found the Krogan Boss later in the mission harder, since you can take cover in the Armature fight without having a super-tough bad guy charge you and melee you to death in two hits.

As for most annoying level - any level involving 15 or more minutes of gameplay where you can't save.

Wow, no one for the Air man stage in Megaman 2? Or the Quickman stage? Wow, bunch of teens on tonight I guess. Except for the guy who said battletoads. Good one. The worst in my life had to be the 3rd dungeon in the original Dragon Warrior. None of this save any time bullshit. None of this unlimited inventory space. You get 8 herbs, or you go to hell.

I think a close follow up would be Ghosts and Goblins, final stage. That stage separated the men from the boys. I can still pick up chicks by saying I beat that stage.

Now i didn't play this game by myself, and it doesnt really have "Levels", but sections broken into different screens.

Anyone who played VVVVVV Should Know: Doing things the hard way. AKA

Veni, Vidi, Vici.

6 screens that you have to go through twice to get to one Trinket (collectable), but it's like the megaman falling sections where the walls are covered in insta-kill spikes, only made harder because of your increased mid-air mobility.

For those of you who dont know VVVVVV, you can only flip gravity (when your on ground), so no jumping. The game trolls you by putting a 1 block high obstacle in front of the trinket. This forces you to go through the challenging Megaman-esque section to get it. Since deaths are only a minor penalty, only taking you back to one of the many scattered checkpoints, people have up to and more than 500 deaths just to beat it.

See, that's not the problem with Dead Space 2 on the higher difficulties... it's the Ubermorph that comes afterwards that's the real problem. He pretty much makes the tension of the game go from 'Unsettling, but I can get through this' to 'Jesus sweet titty fucking christ what the fuck is this madness!'.

I did a Zealot run and I just recall using lots of stasis and doing plenty of running away. Another good idea is the constantly use the secondary fire of a fully upgraded Contact Beam.

I'm tellin' ya...there have been a LOT of pain-in-the-ass levels in a lot of games over the years...but I highly doubt that there's been any level that's more rage-quit inducingly brutal as that frickin' hover-bike level. Like, you'll be so pissed off you'll start making sounds that human beings aren't supposed to make, at least not outside of an insane asylum.

Seriously games where you go from shooting everything that moves and throwing grenades at everything else shouldn't suddnly force you to sneak down a corridor!

How this level made it as is into the release of Psychonauts is incomprehensible. It's like they play-tested the first 95% of the game and then forgot to do the last level because they got drunk early.

Edit: Oh and honorable mentions for the first level and first boss of Witcher 2 [Actually all the Witcher 2 bosses are shit. Pity]. And Human Revolution boss encounters.... But everybody hates those.

The first thing that came to mind was the Rainbow Cruise in Super Mario 64. I played that game when I was five and I found that level to be all but impossible. Funny, because I went back and played that game recently and had no trouble. But for all of those child-hours that level consumed, I'll go with that.

Alternatively, Dark Souls. The whole thing.

Everyone's going for crazy hard or frustrating, but for just plain annoying, I'll have to go with Super Paper Mario and that stupid level where you have to get the 100000 coins, and you have to keep hitting the coin box until you get the privilege of holding right and sitting there waiting for nintendo to stop being idiots. Also that other level where there's a fighting tournament and the world blows up so you have to walk through 20 rooms of literal nothingness to see what's up. It's a good game, but there are so many moments where I was wondering what Nintendo was thinking.

Also the monastery in Uncharted 2, where there's nothing to do but slog through a few hundred enemies and there's sure to be a guy with a shotgun hiding behind a pillar every time you think you've cleared a room
